OK so I have only made these tasty little fuckers once and it was really just a lot of experimentation on my part, but I will give you the recipe anyway, because they were an absolute goddamn taste sensation.

Edit: for clarity, these are cinnamon / ginger brioches, with a deliberately slightly festive flavour on account of it being December. For a more traditional brioche chomp fest, this is my recipe - it’s basically the same, but without the honey, cinnamon and ginger, and it uses bog standard caster sugar instead of muscovado and demarara.

For the dough, you will require:

500g plain flour, plus extra for kneading

2 eggs

100g butter

1 tbsp honey

200ml milk (can you tell that these aren’t vegan yet? You could substitute coconut milk here if you wanted, but the butter is sort of vital)

30g muscovado sugar

60g demarara or golden sugar (yes. There is honey and a lot of sugar in this. I like my brioche sweet. You can use about 30g less sugar if you so choose.)

2tsp cinnamon

2tsp powdered ginger (you can up the quantity a little to about 3tsp if you want them more gingery)

7g sachet of yeast

1 little pinch of salt

And for the decorations, you simply must have:

1 more egg (sorry chickens)

125g icing sugar

candied peel

chocolate spread. Doesn’t have to be Nutella, you bourgeois fucks. Nutoka from Lidl works just as well

And the directions to flavour town are as follows:

Sift the 500g plain flour into a large mixing bowl (use your judgement on this, I trust you) along with the 2 eggs, the yeast and the milk, and knead it together to form a very rough dough, just so it’s all mixed in. No need to go crazy with the kneading here. That comes later.

Add the sugar, the salt, the honey and the butter. It helps to soften (but not melt) the butter a little first; if you keep it in the fridge, whack it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds or so. Then add the cinnamon and the ginger.

Lightly flour a surface and knead the dough, either by hand, so that you can feel like a medieval peasant woman, or in a stand mixer for efficiency (I always do it by hand and think about the plague) until the dough is smooth and elastic. It should have a satiny finish, like a fine Regency silk. If the dough is too sticky, just add a little more flour until it comes together.

Top tips for kneading: imagine that it’s Boris Johnson’s stupid face and punch the living daylights out of it. Throw it around like a ragdoll. Beat it black and blue. Make sure to stretch out the gluten, too; use your elbows for a really fun time. By hand (and elbow) this process takes me about 30 minutes, because I am weak and feeble like a Dickensian orphan; it will probably take you about 20-30, and less in a stand mixer.

Plop the dough into a clean, lightly oiled bowl which gives it room to grow, cover the bowl with clingfilm, and pop it somewhere warm. An airing cupboard is ideal for this, but let’s be real, none of us has an airing cupboard. Not with property prices the way that they are, Barbara. I usually preheat the oven to about 30 degrees, then turn it off, wait a minute or two, and put the dough in there with the oven light on. Leave the dough in its safe space for about 2 hours, until the dough has risen like Christ himself, only without holes in, and also twice its original size, like mega Jesus.

When the dough is ready, take it out to face the world. Gently remove it from the bowl, letting some of the air out, and divide it into approximately 12-14 small balls, about the size of a plum. You can use other measurements for this. Plums are just a universal entity.

If you’re doing the chocolate twists, then roll out each of the little balls until they’re roughly square and about 1/4cm thick. Spread Lidl’s finest Nutoka over the dough, leaving about 1/2cm around the edge, and then roll it up into a sausage, chocolate side in the middle, and put it in the fridge for about 5 minutes. Take it out of the fridge and cut the dough sausage lengthways down the middle, leaving about 1/2cm at the top, so that it looks like it has legs for days. Braid the two legs around each other and tuck the ends under, so you have a cute little swirl. This is a bit messy, because some of the chocolate spread will definitely leak everywhere, but don’t be a coward.

If you’re doing the candied peel and icing variety, then roll the balls into long, thin sausages, and make them into a little swirl, like a snail. That’s it. This step is a lot easier than the chocolate one. Soz.

Put your chocolate boys / your swirly girlies onto a lined baking tray, cover with clingfilm, and pop them back into their safe little cubby-hole again for about 15 minutes.

Now it’s time to roast your children, by which I mean set the oven to 180 degrees celsius (you Yanks can work out the fahrenheit fuckery by yourselves, I want no part of that nonsense. Just use celsius like a cool person.) Crack your third egg into a little cup, whisk it, then brush the egg over your children. Put your children in to bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Don’t waste the leftover egg, by the way. Scramble it. It’s nice. Salt and pepper, low heat, keep stirring, take it off the heat just before you think it’s done. Anyway, I digress.

In the meantime, prepare your icing, by which I mean mix your icing sugar with 15ml warm water. It’s not hard, lads. Even I managed it, although I did also get icing sugar literally everywhere, including on my cat.

Take your children out of the oven, wait for them to cool slightly, and then drizzle the icing over the top, ignoring the fact that the word ‘drizzle’ should, by all rights, be illegal. With your swirly girlies, stud the bits of candied peel into the icing before it sets. I don’t recommend putting candied peel on the chocolate ones, for reasons of flavour profiles and wanky shit like that, but if you really want to, then do it. See if I care. I’m not your mother.

The final step is to consume, after taking a photograph to impress everyone in your life.

Hello, lovelies! I’ve gotten a couple of asks about studying so I decided to condense them into one post for you guys! I’m trying to hit a bunch of different topics so if you need an even more specific post you can send an ask! Without any further ado, have some tips! My studyblr is @spacey-scholar​

Prep

First, you always need a good base for your day! Especially if you’re studying a lot.

Make a good full breakfast! Ex. Eggs and Toast, Smoothie and fruit, Pancakes and a cup of juice. 

How’s your hygiene? Do you need to shower, brush your teeth, wash your face, condition your hair? Do it! You’ll be distracted if you feel messy!

Get dressed like it’s a normal day. Staying in PJ’s is okay! But being ready for the day seriously helps focus!

Likewise, your space should be clean. A clean space is a clean mind! Remove dishes, trash, scrap paper, and extra items. Wide down your desk, organize your pens and books. Your space should feel like your space!

Now make a list of what you need to get done! What needs to be done Now, what needs to be done Soon, and what needs to be done Later? 

Order your list how you want your day to go, and don’t put super-tough subjects back to back, or subjects that are similar exercises i.e. reading thirty pages of two different books back to back is no fun.

The Studying

It’s important to buckle down with No Distractions! If you find yourself distracted put your phone away! If you need your phone, put it on Do Not Disturb until you’re done. I also do this at night for better sleep. 

Pick the best technique for you, Pomodoro, reward-based, group studying, etc.

Play music but only if it will not distract you! If you sing along or daydream it’s the wrong music! Classical, Lo-fi, and White noise are all good! My Spotify Here has some good ones.

Use a nice journal (I don’t mean expensive!) and pens/pencils you enjoy using. I like to have a specific journal and color dedicated to each subject. 

Take notes on recorded lectures and classes, if you’re doing online classes right now try to screen record or record the audio! That way if you space out you can play it later and take notes, and you can absorb the lesson better instead of being distracted.

Don’t worry about your notes, stationary, pictures, being beautiful and your grades being perfect. Life doesn’t always look the way it does on Instagram. And the people who spend hours trying to get a good photo of their coffee are not studying! 

Use flashcards! Quizlet is good if you need premade ones! If you can save up and buy them, Barrons AP Flash Cards are the best in my opinion. Very clean, not too long, very durable, and cover all subjects.

Feeling Distracted 

If you catch yourself drifting off and getting into your head, get up and take a quick walk, stretch, or energizer. 

It’s okay if this happens, don’t guilt yourself! practice affirmation. The best and smartest still get distracted. 

If you are drifting, why? Are you hungry? Tired? Thirsty? Bored? Get a snack and some water, take a break and rest, find a way to make your studying more enjoyable. 

Remember that Motivation and Discipline are different things. Sometimes we just won’t be motivated, we won’t want to do it and it will be rather frustrating. But the cure to this is not shaming its discipline. Remind yourself “This may be hard, and I may not want to do this, but I want to reach my goals and If this is what It takes I will make it happen. 

Always do just one more page of you’re tired. One at a time and oh you did it! Maybe just one more? One more? Eh, one more just to finish the train of thought, Oh just- I’m done? Nice!

If you really can’t focus just move on and come back to this subject, you can always ask for help.

Supplementary Things

There are so many apps you can use to study, for free! My favorites are Tide, Quizlet, Focus Keeper, Forest, Flora, Egenda, SpanishDict, Photomath, and Kahn Academy. 

You can also join a study group! You may know one, but if you don’t, there are a lot of online ones! I’m in a study Discord and have been for a while! it helps a lot and motivates me to finish my work!

You can make a studyblr, but don’t do it just for the aesthetics! It’s about studying, and sometimes that gets messy! Sometimes we fail a test, we spill our tea on our notes, we cry because we don’t understand the formula. That’s the part you don’t see!

Having cute stationery can really help, as well as nice organizers and decorations for your space! I don’t have much money so I get a lot of stuff on Amazon or FB Marketplace.

Health

Remember that no matter what you are good enough. It’s okay if you fail, it’s okay if you struggle.

It’s also okay if your path doesn’t go the way you expected! Maybe you go to a different school than expected! Or choose a trade instead! Maybe you take a gap year! Maybe your passion changes! Maybe it changes six times!

Your health is always more important than your school. If you are in pain, mentally or physically, if you are anxious, exhausted, burnt out, talk to your teachers about it! You matter more than a grade.

Your best is good enough! And your best doesn’t look the same as someone else’s best! Don’t compare!

Residents of Santa Modesta also have been sending in slightly less fuzzy photographs of supposed little gray men.

On display in the store window is the very latest in automatic recorders from Revere-Wollensak. I’ve been currently using the unusual stacking tape cartridge mechanism to play 15 hours worth of store announcements before changing the stack. Each used tape slides over to the right from below while a fresh one is lowered from the stack. It’s a new push from the offices of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. I expect they will be abbreviating their rather unwieldy name soon since they are quickly expanding their magnetic tape services.

Given that the selection of pre-recorded tapes from the catalog they have sent me is rather limited, I’ve been trying to dub some of the records to the new stacking tape cartridges, but customers haven’t shown much interest. Perhaps Mr. Porter would be interested in a new Linear Tape Open device to upgrade The Thinker’s memory banks. If anything, Wattz Electronics has some competition on the market for square holotapes.

Lord & Ladles - scottish chefs cook historical feasts in historical mansions! you meet wacky old money people and learn about strange things their ancestors got up to! you get to watch as world-renowned chefs fail at catching a fish! someone makes a hedgehog out of marzipan! people in the olden times ate some crazy shit! every episode ends with the chefs cheersing each other while lying on vintage furniture!

Big Dreams, Small Spaces - cute british people have cute yards that cute gardening man helps to make into much cuter yards. one lady wants to grow vegetables to share with her neighborhood. one lady wants to sculpt a huge mud head covered in moss coming out of the ground. one dad wants a garden for his down’s syndrome kid so he makes a sensory garden with a thousand different smells and textures. one couple wants to grow flowers for their wedding. it’s all wonderful.

Nailed It! - a bunch of people probably got high and decided to throw money at this show idea. everybody tries their best and everybody comes away either having learned something helpful, having had a rollicking good time, or having won a bunch of money. all the judges are good sports and nobody is made to feel bad for doing bad. also there’s some fucking crazy shit they get up to with modeling chocolate i tell you what.

Skin Wars - actually a lot about artists and their craft??? not really at all about sexy ladies being naked??? very cool stuff done by people with atrocious fashion sense and a complete willingness to buy into the moment. a few bad apples but mostly the reality-show-ness is pretty toned down and people are there to make cool art.

A Cook Abroad - chefs go to different parts of the world and learn about food there. A dumb white guy makes bread with adorable egyptian ladies! A british man gets exhausted by the length of roads in argentina and is only recharged by steak! An awesome woman makes cheese in france!

Love Your Garden - british man does garden makeovers for wholesome deserving families with special needs. Maybe a little bit on the weepy side of things but his assistants are all great and have fantastic hairstyles and people in wheelchairs deserve flowers!

Puffin Rock - this show is supposedly for babies but it is SO PRETTY and SO CHARMING and it’s about animals and nature and stuff and doesn’t really completely shy away from that?? like, one of the characters is a little rodent and the seagulls are the bad guys and he’s actually afraid of getting eaten?? anyway baby birds sing songs with baby bunnies and play splishsplash with baby seals and snuggle with baby animals of all sorts in a beautiful hand painted island.

i’d also suggest the bbc historical farms series–it’s not on netflix, but it *is* mostly on youtube. the metafilter guide that originally introduced me to it is here. there are a bunch of different series of it, now, and each one is a group of archaeologists and historians living on a period location–victorian farm, they live in a farmhouse from the era, and they farm and raise animals and etc wearing period clothing, using period tools and sources as guides. and it sounds like it could be cringey, but they’re all experts in their fields and actually really invested in trying to do things well, so instead it’s a bunch of shows about teamwork and being friends (most of the core team stays the same) and learning things, and it’s delightful.

7 Days Out - might not be soothing for some people, but it’s a fascinating show about how huge events are put on and all the work that is done behind the scenes.
