Way way back, a friend tried to get me to watch Critical Role, and I just couldn't get into it, which I thought was weird because I watched and loved Oxventure, which felt like the exact same concept except being done by British YouTubers. But as I've been engaging with you and others here on Tumblr, I'm realizing the reason: for all that it dumbed things down, Oxventure was still, at the end of the day, driven by the game. Like, there's a behind-the-scenes story from episode one where a player, Andy, was like "we solved your mystery too fast, should we go back and re-film it and do it the way you planned?" And Johnny, the DM, said something like "no, it's fine, that's how the game works sometimes."

Yeah, and a lot of the first actual play podcasts to actually reach a relatively big audience (like Acquisitions Incorporated) were also very much like that: they were primarily about a bunch of folks playing a game and the onus was very much on being an at least somewhat accurate portrayal of the game as it was to be played first and foremost.

And you know, while Keep on the Shadowfell is nowhere near as dreadful an adventure as people make it out to be, Acquisitions Inc. still deserves mention for making an actual play of that adventure super entertaining.
