since it’s pride month, throwback to this beautiful cover and this wholesome interaction between two icons
A lot of the time when I point out that some right-wing policy is proven to not achieve the thing it purports to have as a goal, people rightly point out that the real goal is the negative outcomes that do happen.
Which is correct!
But this is often framed as me approaching the right wing naively by the respondent.
That's not the case at all. I know they're evil. The goal is to demonstrate that they're lying by exposing the way the rhetoric fails to line up with reality.
This has to be ongoing work because someone new has their political awakening every day. Every day, someone needs to learn that the right wing position is wrong on all levels, not just the obvious ones.
there will be people out there who still think the war on drugs (as the absolute first thing that comes to mind) is a legitimate social cause against an antisocial blight on society. if you come out the gate with (the very true statement) that it's actually been a deliberate campaign to target minorities and other undesirable groups to the ruling class, you're going to sound like a clueless conspiracy nut
whereas if you come with a very defensible, statistically supported point of "it doesn't work and has never worked" you can open the door to the follow up question of "why did the government do it in the first place, and (in many cases) why are they still doing it?"
This, exactly.
The play is to:
Demonstrate that the policy doesn't work
Demonstrate that the people enforcing the policy have everything they need to know it doesn't work
Provide the context of what the policy achieves in the absence of its "intended" outcome.
Remind people that the purpose of a system is what it does.
Then, instead of being a non-sequitur claim you're just pulling out of thin air, the conclusion is the most reasonable way to assemble the provided puzzle pieces.

Imagine being the gays at a pride event in 2004 living their lives when someone grabs the microphone and announces to the room that Ronald Reagan was pronounced dead. Can you even imagine the hype, the celebration, the pure elation
This is the Pride Month that It will happen. I feel it in my gay bones

The European Union already forced Apple to abandon its proprietary charging port and adopt USB-C across its entire iPhone lineup. It just did something bigger. A new EU mandate requires every smartphone sold in Europe including Apple devices to feature a battery that can be replaced by the user without specialist tools, without voiding a warranty, and without sending the device to a manufacturer approved service center. Batteries must maintain a minimum capacity threshold after a set number of charge cycles and replacement parts must remain available for up to ten years after a model goes on sale.
The consumer electronics industry built its current business model around batteries that degrade, cannot be replaced at home, and create a natural upgrade cycle every two to three years. The EU just legislated that model out of existence in the world's largest regulatory market.
Apple, Samsung, and every other manufacturer now faces a choice between redesigning their devices for the European market or accepting that their current hardware architecture is no longer legally sellable there.
Given that no company walks away from European consumers voluntarily the phones are going to change and once they change for Europe the rest of the world will ask why theirs still do not.
The EU published new guidelines for removability and replaceability requirements under the Batteries Regulation. Some progress was made, but
Portable device batteries that maintain at least 80% of their capacity after 1000 cycles are exempt. Meaning that most Apple and flagship Samsung Galaxy phones are likely unaffected.
Regrettably, a huge opportunity was missed to make all smartphone and tablet batteries removable and replaceable by end-users. After several changes of direction by the Commission throughout the legislative process on the matter, the guidelines state that for portable batteries covered by the Ecodesign regulation for smartphones and tablets, the latter will prevail over the Batteries Regulation, allowing an important exemption from removability and replaceability requirements for devices meeting certain battery longevity and waterproofing requirements. Not only does this run directly against the aim of the Batteries Regulation itself, but it also risks setting a dangerous precedent ahead of future product-specific Ecodesign requirements, reinforcing a false dichotomy between durability and repairability.
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!

#as a trained museum professional (nonpracticing):#there are usecases for large-model analytical AI in museum research#such as leveraging the frankly nonsensically large datasets in ex. natural history collections databases#but using generative AI for curation and exhibits is inimical to the spirit of the enterprise imo#pay designers#if you can't afford designers that is why god created grad students - via @thepioden

ah yes, lasagna
He doesn't show her face. He tries not to laugh at a basic question so she's not embarrassed. Films his reaction, and is so kind. This is SUCH a good video.
it is funny when people who don’t draw tell people who do “i can’t even draw a circle”. a shape that is notoriously difficult for artists to get right on the first try. or “i can’t even draw a straight line,” something many artists literally have to practice drawing over and over again as a warmup exercise
This is why I have TikTok

Thats a ShrimplyBeautiful video! And that's a critically endangered cardinal sulawesi shrimp!
The accounts are run by a person named Timothy Utterback, he's a conservationist who posts videos of his shrimp "dancing" (this is how they eat!) to rave music and uses the revenue to fund their maintenance. There's typically a couple of shrimp rave livestreams a week over on tiktok, so check it out!
