I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.

I thought it was an interesting arguement for cattle in Point Reyes but what about other native ruminants like tule elk? Are cows really necessary? How does cattle fit into Ohlone lifestyle in the modern sense and how can we support local tribes?

Can I be arrested or shot for trespassing if I go off trail? What are the consequences?

Sometimes I find a dead cow and then come back years later and it’s still there, still not even completely fleshless. When you hike here you will see lots of cattle all the time but deer and coyotes more rarely. In short, I think the cattle are dying at a normal rate, there are just a lot of them and their bones stick around for a long time. 

Or, maybe they don’t take good care of them, or have a laissez-faire approach. I did see one near the gate (so, easy to find) who clearly needed assistance in birth, but I have no idea if that means anything or if the rancher just didn’t know. Some of this land is HUGE and I don’t even know how they get the live cattle back when it’s roundup/slaughter time. 

2. What about other animals, do we really need cows?  I asked about this of the ecologist and fire expert I interviewed. One (I forget who) said that deer are browsers not grazers, meaning they eat leaves not grass. Elk are both, meaning they’d probably only eat half as much grass. These parks are very intermixed with neighborhoods so…I’m not sure how much people would be ok with large animals like elk or bison. Of course cattle are not native, but they are similar ecologically to bison, and they can be more easily contained with barbed wire. Furthermore cattle provide income to the park and ranchers take some responsibility, but I don’t actually know how much. Maybe it costs more to have them, who knows. Some argue that it’s nice to have local beef instead of importing it….but I have never seen local beef advertised at local stores and I’m told these cattle’s flesh just goes to Japan anyway. 

That being said, I’m not saying I agree with the cattle, and grazing them on public lands, how to do it or whether to do it at all, is a matter of intense debate in ecological communities. 

3.  How do cattle fit into Ohlone lifestyle in the modern sense and how can we support local tribes? This one I do not know at all, but it’s an interesting question! Apparently there are 18,500 Indigenous people in the Bay Area, but I never in school nor through my experiences as an adult living in the Bay learned much at all about local modern Indigenous people. I think the only time I heard the word Ohlone before writing this was in reference to a community college. So, sorry, maybe someone else can take this one!

4.  Can I be arrested or shot for trespassing if I go off trail? What are the consequences? No. Going off trail is usually not against park rules. (Assuming you follow other rules, but check your local park.) Breaking park rules is not the same as trespassing. Trespassing is not a murder-worthy offense in most states, and even when you have stand your ground laws, wandering through a field isn’t likely to result in your legal execution, or even arrest, as long as you leave when asked.
