Absolute perfection.

a movie like project hail mary can exist in almost any sci fi universe bc it’s clearly an early point in the universe’s history w intelligent civilians just on the cusp of efficient intergalactic travel and relations. like, they’re still working out the kinks (speed, fuel, tech). after a few thousand years……its incredibly probable that someone like luke skywalker could have grew up hearing bed time stories about a creature that ate stars and the saviors that “slayed” the monster

the story would have evolved over the millennia into an epic tale about a giant made of stone and his fierce human accomplice, who wielded “magic” weapons to fight the sun killers. imagine Han Solo drunkenly telling the story to an eridian (whose home planet kept VERY accurate records about heroes and have well kept memorials) who can’t help think to themselves ‘rocky would love this but grace would hate it’ bc for fucks sake it was a microorganism not a fairytale!

she's platonic about it but in my opinion, stratt 100% treats grace as her dead wife. she keeps a tacky fox trinket in her coat pocket. there's a framed photo of him in her study . he's grinning goofily in it (bc he's a dork). new guy like: is that her husband? / no, dumbass, it's dr. ryland grace, 1/3 of the hail mary mission. / oh, fuck. were they... ? / yeah, it's unclear. black-and-white montages of grace messing around in high-level meetings play every time stratt contemplates committing more environmental crimes. she looks up at the night sky and vaguely wonders if he's enjoying his space ramen. that's her dead wife. she killed him.
