i think he probably thought that marty was an acquaintance he pulled into an experiment and that's why when, during the clocktower sequence, his goodbyes are seemingly a bit uncomfortable, telling marty he's made a real difference in his life, he probably thinks he comes across as too friendly and THEN marty pulls him into that hug and hes absolutely shocked ... not at just the hug but the love behind it... he really is so shocked!

i suspect it's something to do with how overbearing the parent is, and i say this because of the evidence from Twin Pines Marty, and how george shifts in lone pine (in the telltale game anyway)

in Twin Pines, George was spineless and non-confrontational, and as a result of that, Marty grew up to be scrappy by comparison, probably cuz he got sick of betting picked on/compared to his dad. (as evidenced by the comic where he meets doc)

in Lone Pine, George urges the kids to stand up for themselves and tries to set an example, but by comparison, he might accidentally be more overbearing and protective than Twin Pine George (as seen in the TTG game where Marty has to tell George to back off and let him fight his own battles)

which makes me wonder if Lone Pine Marty might have been more like Marty Jr (who should have been named Calvin, you can't tell me otherwise), ESPECIALLY if he grew up as a youngest sibling in a family with a lot of money. (not to say that wealth ruins someone, but they do have different experiences growing up)

but if you want to keep it consistent, you could say Lone Pine Marty kept the tendency towards being scrappy at least a little bit because he was picked on my his peers for having his dad meddle in confrontations

so no matter which Marty you project forward to 2015, you can say either way that after the rolls royce accident (and 30 years of scar tissue, surgery, and pain killers later), his headstrong nature served him somewhat in an ability to keep a stable and well-paying office job (which i assume he got through his brother David), but obv his kids might have had to deal with that in their lives too, and that might have made them less assertive (or be Marlene and be awesome and not gaf)

another factor to consider too is family genetics. Seamus was a tough cookie, but he wasn't a hothead. his brother was though, and he died for it. so the McFly lineage might have had some culling of the hotheadedness for a while before it resurfaced in Marty. OR, you can go to the other side of the family and extrapolate that Marty might be more like Lorraine in assertiveness. (minus the whole Following People Home thing. probably)

OR (since traits commonly skip generations), he might be more like Trixie. that's probably Very Likely where he got his musical inclinations from anyway:

so with that in mind, we also can consider that there may be attributes from Jennifer's side of the family contributing to Marty Jr's Whole Thing that we might not know about (iirc, all we know about her family is that her grandfather was a cop)
