There’s a soft hum that comes from the back of his throat as he scratches his beard in thought, something second nature though perhaps not so civil in polite company. Royal company, actually. “Your Highness –” and he’s momentarily uncomfortable in his address to her, was it proper or correct? He finds his little education has left him blissfully ignorant up until this moment. “Ma’am – if I may? We depend on your country’s production of cotton as our weather, if you’ve noticed, is entirely bleak and damp. We power machines but without material… I fear we will fall in disarray.”
He grows silent then, this small woman before him has his tongue catch on his teeth and he can’t help clench his hands. A fine businessman he may be but an engager of nobility he is not.
“i can understand your frustration. for i heard similar complaints from my subjects before the law was passed. from what i can understand, it has given them more freedom to produce and their profits are up. you must see that a fledgling country like mine cannot compete with the machine that is the british empire’s industry.” she said in the calmest tone she could manage, a bit annoyed at having to discuss economic bothers.

as the officer left, pete turned back to the empress and offered a small, reassuring smile.
“we’re not sure how long this will take, your majesty, but you might want to stay here until we can gauge the safety of you leaving. now, the invitation – could you tell me a little about it? did it have any handwriting on it, or a seal?”
she was about to ask for a phone to call her majesty when pete began barking orders. good, the queen should be protected. “could i first make a call? i would like to inform my husband of my whereabouts and what is happening. and my friend, josephine. she was supposed to meet me... oh, dear god, she must be worried sick!”

Aeditha looked over to where Teresa had pointed trying to make out the woman in the crowd. “Ah, so there is the genius behind everything. Who is she?” she asked with a smile “Maybe that event planner and I will work well together, I tend to like my events to be extravagant too.”
“if this was two hundred years ago, i would say she is my lady-in-waiting. secretary and assistant don’t cover all she does. my chief of staff perhaps?” nodding she made a note to talk to josephine to find a card. “i’ll get you a card than.”

“So am I, I am glad that I can help support a country that values align with mine.” Aeditha followed the other woman’s gaze around the room. She had spent most of the party standing by herself, only exchanging a few words with other business people so it was nice to be having a conversation with someone. “What event planner did you use? Because I think I might have to borrow them for when I throw my next event.”
“i’ll give you his card later, but honestly..” she said leaning closer. “the part is only good like this because of that lady over there.” the lady in question is josephine, her best friend and helper in most matters. “she intervened whenever the party got too out of hand. she was able to match my more simple taste with the extravagance necessary for an event like this. honestly, she is a heaven sent, don’t know what i would do without her.”
