Hi, all. I can't truly ever call any pride month a "happy" pride but may you have one nonetheless or let this be whatever kind of space and time you need it to be.
In particular, I want to take the time to spotlight and give my respects to Jonathan Joss.
It's been one year today and right at the start of pride month no less.
If you don't know, Joss is an Indigenous two-spirit man murdered one year ago. A society that supports homophobia, transphobia, and anti-Indigenous racism is designed to produce such an outcome and continues to for many others.
There's also a very ableist component given how many dismissed the ongoing violence he and his family were subjected to as just being "mentally unwell" or some equivalent. Disabled, mad, mentally unwell, etc. people don't deserve to be murdered or isolated. Period.
In particular, to any of the Indigenous queer people I'm in community with, I hope you can always feel welcome here and have space for grief today especially.

today i found out that the song telephone was inspired by gaga's fear of not being able to have fun anymore bc of the increasing demands the music industry was putting on her. 100 percent i thought it was just about not wanting people to blow up your phone when you're trying to vibe at the club. and it's about that too. it's amazing how art can have so many meanings
when i was 13 i made up a group of ocs who were gifted the ability to teleport but with caveats that made it really irritating for them and everyone else. i canât remember all of them but two. one of them could only pass from place to place through water. they could jump into something as small as a cup of tea and come out the other side through a puddle or something but notably they did get wet. so any time they teleported anywhere they arrived soaking wet. they had to go everywhere with a waterproof paddling bag as a purse. the other could only teleport between occupied bathrooms. any bathroom in the world was fine but it had to be in use. they could just ask a friend to go in first and cheat it that way but in an emergency theyâd just have to barge in on someone with their eyes closed and yell âSORRY! SORRY!â and disappear immediately from existence.

before we start posting that july is gay wrath month letâs consider that july is disability pride month first and foremost. the âbe gay do crimesâ memes can wait
before this post breaches containment and people start going âwhy not both heheheâ i want you to seriously consider the very long history of disabled peopleâs existence being pushed aside and/or seen as secondary. i promise you itâs not going to hurt to hold onto the memes and give disabled people space for visibility and celebration.
i say this as a disabled trans person whose trans identity is made front-and-center to the (mainly cis) people who know iâm trans but my identity as a disabled person is brushed off by the very same people.
this post has in fact breached containment and even with this disclaimer many of you in the notes are still missing the point. itâs not rescheduling wrath month and/or including disabled people into wrath month itâs about celebrating disability pride month first before anything else.
Talking to my traumatized friends like âtake your time responding and donât feel any need to cater to my opinion in this matter just tell me the truth about what you feel. Your feelings are valid. â and itâs about like choosing where to go to lunch.
Y'all do not know how long it took for me to finally realize "telling other people what I think they want to hear" is not the nicest kindest choice for me to always make. And neither do I, because I'm still learning it, but as soon as I do I'll be sure to tell you How Long It Took.
Because, haha, it turns out? Most people actually don't need to be constantly right, always in control, and perpetually being reassured. And they'll feel funny (negative) when you treat them like they do. Because people mostly assume that how you treat them is a direct reflection of how you perceive them, and they will never assume you're treating them that way because of someone who literally isn't currently in the room.
Wild, I know.
In actuality, people already know you have a preference because that is a very normal thing to have. And because you're never as slick as you think you are, you definitely won't fool anyone by pretending you don't. So the actual kindest choice to make is to just be honest about what you want, because most people will feel most comfortable when they know for sure that the decision you've both made is truly a mutual agreement.
Genuinely? Mind-blowing concept. But a very helpful thing to remember.
and while weâre at it, fuck this idea that ONE ACCOUNT has to belong uniquely to ONE PERSON. This is the same thing these silicon valley fucks want; their vision of the future where everyone has a unique biometric ID code implanted in their body is the ultimate extension of Netflixâs âno password sharingâ policy. You want to use your friendâs car? Sorry, you canât, you need to be an authorized user. Your mother wants to let you look something up on her OED account? Too bad! Thatâs only for her! The concept of perfect market efficiency gives them greedy little money bag eyes.
If I pay money to have a newspaper sent to my house, they donât charge me extra when I show it to my dad. This password sharing thing isnât just a Netflix problem; donât be surprised if it shows up elsewhere in other forms. Stamp this idea out now or weâll be stuck with it.

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? Itâs not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, itâs that most of us donât have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We donât hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I canât eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I donât have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, itâs that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. Itâs not that you hate theme parks, itâs not like youâve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. Itâs just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
this is a really great explanation of some of the secondary effects of gentrification and how and why they compound the primary effect. but i have to point out that the primary effect of gentrification is that it drives rent up, and means that people canât afford to live in their homes anymore. it tears up families and destroys communities.
