DC debuts first Asian-American Green Lantern

DC Comics will be rolling out its first-ever Asian-American Green Lantern in a graphic novel by Minh Lê and Andie Tong, which is being published under the Zoom imprint — the banner for content aimed at younger audiences.

Wow. WOW. Look at all these sheltered people and their internalized misogyny.

The point isn’t, “NOT ALL MEN ARE OUT TO GET YOU.”

The point is, “WE HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING A NICE GUY FROM A SERIAL KILLER.”

It’s not like they fucking wear nametags, okay? Moreover, the most awful people with the worst intentions often put on the nicest face or deliberately make themselves seem harmless and likeable, to lull potential victims into a false sense of security. (Read up on Ted Bundy sometime. It’s horrifying shit. Or read any thread on the “Let’s Not Meet” subreddit.)

In order to protect ourselves, we are forced to assume the worst of every man we meet, because statistically speaking, the biggest danger to women…IS MEN. Saying “not all men are out to get you, you’re just being paranoid” is like saying “not every car you ride in is going to crash, so buckling your seatbealt is stupid.”

When dealing with an unknown situation, in the absence of absolute proof of safety, exercising a little extra caution can be the difference between life and death. Shaming women for being what you may view as overly cautious is every bit as horrid as blaming them if something goes wrong later on.

And refusing to go to a secluded location with a complete stranger without letting someone know where you’re going, who you’re with, and how to find you is just common street sense, whether you’re on a date or just going out for business or social purposes.

If your life has been so sheltered (or your coping skills so incredible) that you see no need to distrust strangers or worry about the potential for violence, you should thank your lucky stars.

And you should also be aware that just because it hasn’t happened to you or anyone you know does not mean that it doesn’t happen.

Also, it’s story time! I’m pretty certain I saved my mom’s fucking LIFE by convincing her do this on a date with a fucking COP (which she thought was safer than going out with other men, but let me tell you, cops are the WORST partner abusers around, so pls be safe!!!!). 

She had only talked with him online and they were gonna go for a drive somewhere remote for some reason and she wasn’t going to take any precautions at all. I, being a well seasoned internet dater, was terrified by this prospect and warned her about how cops are actually much more dangerous than civilians and that getting in his car and going somewhere remote was even more dangerous. SO, I told her the best thing to do is to take a pic of him, his plates, then send it to me, and make sure you do it all right in front of him SO HE SEES IT. I warned her too that as a cop he should KNOW how dangerous this date would be for her, so if he kicks up a fuss about it AT ALL I told her to run like the fucking wind. 

So when she gets there, he is already in his fucking truck, doesn’t get out to greet her, so she takes the pics of his car, plates, and him and sends it to me and I thank her profusely. Then apparently she gets in his car, sees there’s a fucking BAT in the back, and doesn’t this fucker just kick up a damn fuss about her doing this. AND MY MOM DOESN’T GET OUT OF THE CAR!!!!!! OMFGWLJELWNLWEJFANMDS

So he starts the car and they drive away and she can already tell he’s a fucking creeper. At one point, he even tells her a truly sad story of his life and she reacts sadly and doesn’t this dickhead say “why aren’t you smiling?” as if that’s what women are FOR. She responds “You had just told me a very sad, personal story, smiling didn’t seem appropriate”, as if she’s just there for smile back at him and look pretty!!!! 

She texts me throughout all of this, telling me she’s increasingly getting uncomfortable and scared. He’s becoming increasingly hostile and unpleasant. She eventually texts me to ask me to call her and pretend to be my younger sister that lives with her saying that I’m sick (my mom’s a nurse). But my younger sis is 26, has a baby, is a personal support worker with some medical knowledge; and that didn’t seem like something strong enough to me that would make this dangerous fucker give up my mom. 

So what do I do?

I called her and pretended I was my little sister crying and freaking out because her baby is super sick and she needs her nurse mom at her side bc this is WAY beyond her knowledge or comfort level. Thankfully that worked and he turned around. But he wasn’t happy and that bat was still in the back, staring mom in the goddamn face. 

Later she called me and thanked me profusely and she STILL talks about it and how scary it was and how she is CERTAIN the real reason he turned around was bc I had insisted she send me those pictures.

You know men, don’t you? They‘re your coworkers, neighbors, coreligionists, teammates, fellow committee members, and what have you. Yeah, maybe the danger is less when it’s not a date situation, but basically, any time you’re getting in a car with a (relatively) unknown guy, make sure someone knows where you are, who you’re with, and where you’re going.

I know there’s more out there, and I probably missed some from the authors I’ve included, even. Folks, if you know of more MLM monster stories, please let us know, because while we’re not trying to have a masterlist here, it’s something I’ve been seeing come up a lot, and I think we need to help people find them. 

(Also a note that I’m not trying to slight anyone here by leaving them off the list; I just ran out of steam after working my way down @thetravelerwrites‘ masterlist of masterlists and looking through people’s lists. Also, when we move too much during an argument, or lean forward, it’s scary, and I never knew. I was even a little insulted at first, because surely she didn’t think I would hurt her. But see, that doesn’t matter. It wasn’t a sign that she mistrusted me specifically; it’s a conditioned response. (Although if you keep doing it once you realize it scares her, she SHOULDN’T trust you.)

Not every woman has been physically harmed by a man she trusted, but every woman KNOWS a woman who has.

I used to be horrible about this, because I didn’t realize how intimidating it was. I didn’t understand why the woman I was with clammed up or tried to tell me what she thought I wanted to hear, and I only got angrier, and acted even more like an asshole. It was wrong. It was abusive. It didn’t matter if I INTENDED it that way; it was still emotionally abusive. And it was inexcusable.

I get that when passions are high, and when you’re frustrated, it’s a natural tendency to let your voice get louder, to shout and gesture and lean forward. But you can train yourself to do better. You can train yourself to keep more of an even tone, to refrain from large and fast gestures, to not lean into her personal space. I did. I’m not perfect at it yet, but goddamn it, I WILL be.

History is littered with the bodies of women who believed a man “would never.” This includes women killed by men who honestly, deeply, truly believed they “would never”… right up until she said that one thing or moved in just that way and he just got so mad, just that once, and pushed her or punched her or slashed her or shot her… just once, y’know, to shut her up, or because she was flinching and didn’t she know that HE’S NOT LIKE THAT and I’LL TEACH HER TO BE AFRAID OF ME…

We are trained, from infancy, that Men With Loud Voices are a source of pain from which we cannot escape, and attempts to escape may result in more pain. And as soon as we’re old enough to comprehend a world broader than our immediate circle, a world that extends into the past and will run into the future, we realize that there is no way, no way at all, to tell which men “would never” and which men “would never… except if.”

We live or die on that “if.” And any man who doesn’t like facing that hyper-vigilance can work on fixing OTHER MEN, not women’s fear.

The reaction shouldn’t be “not all men are like that;” it should be “no woman should have to live in fear.”

New Zealand Mass Shooting - The Victims

49 people were killed on March 15th, 2019 when Brenton Tarrant opened fire on people inside two separate mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. These are some of the lives which were lost.

DAOUD NABI (71)

The shooting death of Daoud Nabi has been confirmed by his son Omar. He is the first fatality to have been identified. Mr.Nabi made it his work to help refugees who were new to New Zealand, and his son said his father died after being shot while trying to shield others from gunfire.

HOSNE ARA (42)

Hosne Ara was a Bangladeshi national who was praying in the women’s area of the mosque when Tarrant started firing. Upon hearing the gunshots, Hosne went to look for her disabled husband in the men’s area where the shooting was coming from. It was at this point she was shot and killed. Her death was confirmed by her nephew.

FARHAJ AHSAN (30)

Farhaj was an Indian national who emigrated to New Zealand in 2009. He was employed as an electrical engineer and was married with two young children (a three-year-old daughter and a six-month-old son). His death was confirmed by his father.

NAEEM RASHID (50)

Naeem Rashid emigrated to New Zealand from Abottabad, Pakistan. He worked in Christchurch as a teacher. It has been confirmed that, at one point during Tarrant’s livestream, Naeem Rashid attempts to rush him and stop the attack but is fatally shot instead.

AMJAD HAMID (57)

Amjad Hamid moved to New Zealand from Palestine in 1996. He had two sons, and was on the Canterbury District Health Board, where he specialised in cardio-respiratory illnesses.

MUCAD IBRAHIM (3)

Mucad’s brother Abdi spoke to the media about the loss of his little brother, describing him as: “energetic, playful, and liked to smile and laugh a lot.” He is believed to be the youngest fatality.

SAYYAD MILNE (14)

Sayyad Milne, a high school student, wanted to be a footballer when he grew up. His father has said: “It’s so hard to see him gunned down by someone who didn’t care about anyone or anything.”

TALHA RASHID (21)

Talha Rashid, son of Naeem Rashid, was just 11 when he and his family moved to New Zealand from his birthplace of Pakistan. Talha was just recently employed, and had his sights set on marriage next.

HUSSAIN AL-UMARI (35)

Hussain Al-Umari always followed the same routine on Fridays; he would go to pray at the mosque, then visit his parents and share a dinner with them. His parents were both immigrants from the United Arab Emirates, and they had spoken to him just the day before he was shot and killed.

KHALED MUSTAFA (45)

Khaled Mustafa came to New Zealand as a refugee from Syria in 2018. The group Syrian Solidarity New Zealand confirmed his death. His two sons were also shot.

HAMZA MUSTAFA (16)

Hamza Mustafa was Khaled Mustafa’s son, and came with his father to New Zealand while seeking refuge from the conflict in Syria. Hamza’s brother was also shot and remains in the hospital.

LILIK ABDUL HAMID (37)

Lilik Hamid was an Indonesian national who worked as a technician for Air New Zealand. He was a resident of Christchurch and a spokesperson from Indonesian confirmed he had died in hospital.

ATTA ELAYYAN (33)

Atta Elayyan was a father, the goalkeeper for New Zealand’s national futsal team, and co-founder/CEO of tech company LWA Solutions.

SYED JAHANDAD ALI (34)

Syed Jahandad Ali was in immigrant from Pakistan, married to Amna Ali. The Pakistan Association of New Zealand confirmed his death.

OSAMA ADNAN (37)

Osama Adnan came to New Zealand from his birthplace of Egypt. His death was confirmed in an area hospital.

HAROON MAHMOOD (40)

Like several other victims, Haroon Mahmood was an immigrant from Pakistan. He was a lecturer in statistics at Lincoln University. He was married and had two children, aged 13 and 11.

ALI ELMADANI (66)

Ali Elmadani came to New Zealand from his birthplace in the United Arab Emirates in 1998. He was a retired engineer and his death was confirmed by his daughter.

SUHAIL SHAHID (46)

Suhail Shahid was a Pakistani national and university graduate whose death was confirmed by Pakistan’s foreign ministry.

SYED AREEB AHMED (26)

Syed Ahmed was an accountant from Karachi, Pakistan who had been visiting New Zealand for his work. His death was also confirmed by Pakistan’s foreign ministry.

Ansi Alibava was originally from Kodungalloor, India. At the time of her death, she was pursuing a masters degree in management of agribusiness at Lincoln University. She was a resident of Christchurch with her husband Abdul.
