I think an important instinct you have to build up when you read/watch sci-fi is discerning which things are givens. If Arrival tells you that the alien language is atemporal, it is, that's not a puzzle for you to pick apart, it's a prerequisite to getting the rest of the story. When I talk sci-fi with people who don't consume a lot of it this seems to be a thing they get hung up on.

I think this is really important for writers, too. I know I get hung up on worldbuilding details and it's good to have a reminder that I don't need to reinvent DNA just for an alien to have green skin.

This goes for high fantasy as well. You don’t need to talk about farming and supply chains and plant evolution, especially if it is just not relevant to the story at all. I have seen so many posts of people getting hung up on how to have the most “realistic” fantasy world possible, and at that point, it seems like they have forgotten what fantasy actually means.

i think ppl would be a lot happier and better-adjusted on here if they realized that being online on a website is like being in any other casual public space full of people. if u walk into walmart u dont immediately think to yourself “i have to be friends with everyone in this walmart and if not everyone likes me i’m a failure” and u really shouldn’t feel that way online either. likewise if there’s a guy in the walmart parking lot shouting obscenities u probably wouldn’t answer him and that’s literally an exact equivalent to some of the weird stuff that people on here seem to feel they’re obligated to respond to.
