Between 1971 and 1972, Swedish artist Sten Eklund created a series of 53 hand coloured etchings that he called Kullahusets hemlighet (the secret of the Kulla house). The etchings are a work of fiction, presented as the work of botanist J. M. G. PalĂŠen, who in 1849 discovered a strange area surrounded by magnetic fields. He encountered no people in the area, but plenty of evidence of human-like activity: agriculture, mining, etc. When later on he tried to return to the area to do further research on it, he was unable to find it again.
The images range from maps to technical drawings to plant, mineral and insect studies. They are enigmatic, familiar the way a recurring dream is familiar. Looking at them, I feel like I'm about to reach a sense of understanding at any moment - but it remains just out of grasp.
A now out of print book with all the images was produced in 2016. I found an incomplete list of the titles on an auction site and the titles of the images are so evocative that I wanted to translate and share them. I think not having an image for every title adds a new layer to the artwork. Understanding is fragmenting and slipping between my fingers.
List of motifs:
The Kulla house, overview.
The Kulla house. Blueprint.
Overview of the Kulla house area. 3:1&2: Cross section with variations in elevation.
Possibly a device for energy transformation or communication.
Detail from the above.
The screens. Occurred all over the area. Probably intended for the uptake of solar energy.
The screens. Technical drawing.
Technical drawing of different wagon types. The upper wagon open, the lower hermetically sealed.
Communications central (?) with strange vessels, "ferries", controlled by the stones placed in a row in front of the building. 9a. The stones in front of the central.
The treatment plant. Seems to be designed not to allow emissions through the magnetic curtain.
The engine room inside the treatment plant.
The wagon area at the top of the Kullait mountain. 12a. Detail of the wagons.
Geological map of the Kulla house area.
The rock at the entrance of the Kulla house area.
The open-pit mine (2 in fig. 3).
The type of rock by the "Kulla house" (1 in fig. 3).
Mineral I. Slightly larger than natural size.
Mineral II. Slightly larger than natural size.
I-III. The Kullait quarry.
Botanical map.
Horsetail plant from the farm (fig. 20/3).
Algae (fig. 20/16).
Fruit from bush grown by no. 4 in fig. 20. 23a. The same as the above.
Consequences of the rising temperatures.
Overview of the until then prevailing type of vegetation.
The trees by the yellow dots in fig. 20. A kind of peculiar overgrown lichen, or possibly stunted palm species.
Silphium connalum.
The hotbeds.
The hotbeds, technical drawing.
From the lichen cultivation.
One of the houses by no. 4 in fig. 3.
Stool from the house area.
Table.
Box (storage).
Vessel.
Meteorological map. One can see that the heat development shows a kidney shaped characteristic starting from the Kulla house (1).
Flying device (soundless).
From the interior of the Kulla house. Stand with pipes.
The wall. In front of the wall we can see one of the frames (stands).
Some of the machines in proximity to the wall.
The storage building by no. 11 in fig. 3.
"The white spot", one of the heaps of white powder found in multiple locations within the area.
The insect.
The greenhouse by no. 3 in fig. 3.
Seed dispersal area.
Moss.
From the interior of the Kulla house (Camera Obscura).

Marina AbramoviÄ's Balkan Baroque (1997)
"The treatment of traumatic memories in AbramoviÄ's major work Balkan Baroque...gained additional political thrust due to the war in Bosnia. In the midst of an instillation of three video projectors showing the artist and her parents, and three copper vessels full of water, AbramoviÄ sat for over four days, cleaning 1,500 cattle bones and singing songs from her childhood". quote and photo from Taschen's Women Artists in the 20th and 21st Century (edited by Uta Grosenik)
"It was summer in Venice, very, very hot and after a few days already worms start coming out of the bones. And the smell was unbearable. The whole idea that by washing bones and trying to scrub the blood, is impossible. You can't wash the blood from your hands as you can't wash the shame from war. But also it was important to transcend it, that can be used, this image, for any war, anywhere in the world. So to become from personal there can be universal". Marina AbramoviÄ: The Artist is Present (MoMA)
My only previous experience with Ben McKenzie before this post was watching him play Jim Gordon in the show Gotham. I had no idea he'd made a documentary or co-wrote an investigative journalism book on the subject of cryptocurrency until I googled him after watching the video. Turns out he's been interested in the subject since his time working on his undergraduate economics degree.
Sharing to hopefully spread this information to anyone else who would be interested but had no idea his book or documentary existed

Hospitality, Rape and Consent in Vampire Popular Culture: Letting the Wrong One In (Palgrave Gothic), edited by David Baker, Stephanie Green and Agnieszka Stasiewicz-BieĹkowska, softcover edition, Palgrave Macmillan, 2020 (2017). Cover image by MĂĄryas NĂĄgy/EyeEm/Getty Images, info: palgrave.com.
This unique study explores the vampire as host and guest, captor and hostage: a perfect lover and force of seductive predation. From Dracula and Carmilla, to True Blood and The Originals, the figure of the vampire embodies taboos and desires about hospitality, rape and consent. The first section welcomes the reader into ominous spaces of home, examining the vampire through concepts of hospitality and power, the metaphor of threshold, and the blurred boundaries between visitation, invasion and confinement. Section two reflects upon the historical development of vampire narratives and the monster as oppressed, alienated Other. Section three discusses cultural anxieties of youth, (im)maturity, childhood agency, abuse and the age of consent. The final section addresses vampire as intimate partner, mapping boundaries between invitation, passion and coercion. With its fresh insight into vampire genre, this book will appeal to academics, students and general public alike.

Heatwave Recipe Recommendations
The heatâs been brutal this summer but we still gotta eat! If youâre like me, heat might suppress your appetite, and the last thing any of us want is to sweat over a hot stove and oven when itâs already boiling outside. Here are some of my favorite hot-weather recipes to keep hydrated and fed with when the weather is unbearable! (All recipes should be un-paywalled).
NYTâs best gazpacho (lives up to its name!!)
Persian cold cucumber soup (if you like tzatziki you will like this!)
Eric Kimâs cold noodles with tomato (infinitely riffable Korean flavor profile â for a creamier and less brothy take, try these cold sesame noodles too)
Vietnamese chicken and herb salad (this is an excellent time to get a rotisserie chicken so you donât have to turn the oven on)
Radish sandwiches with butter and salt (and in a similar vein, if you dig this flavor combo you should try this Polish cottage cheese dip on some good rye bread or even crackers)
Itâs still a little early in the season, but you can never go wrong with a BLT (or, if you donât eat bacon, try this tomato furikake sandwich in its place)
Infinite iterations of pasta salad! You can use anything you got but here is a template I like.
Assorted dense bean salads. This back pocket canned salad is a weird combo of jarred ingredients but it slaps, this hoagie-inspired one is super satisfying, and cowboy caviar is a classic for a reason.
Poke bowls! Canned tuna mixed with some kewpie mayo and sriracha is a budget-friendly riff on the usual ahi and makes everything taste like a spicy tuna roll, but use whatever proteins you like, this is more of a loose template.
Please feel free to add some of your own favorite summer recipes in the replies and comments! Weâll get through this together. đ¤đ¤đ¤
