Caribbean Through a lens: Haringey

Some final thoughts on the CTAL Haringey project from members and volunteers from the African-Caribbean Leadership Council's Elders' group.

Honing the script for the community showing...

Preparations for the showing are underway - a 'script' written by one of the young people (Lucille) drawn from what they have learnt about the elder's group.

Folk songs held great importance in Caribbean culture, and some of them are so strong they endure today, identified with by new generations. Part of the process of adding life to the images in the project was providing extra context by way of songs...

No project about the Caribbean can be complete without rhythm....and young people just naturally pick it up.

Witnessing the process of them contextualising and understanding the pictures for themselves was special...

Washing clothes in the river - an art-form forgotten by many... 

We found out what they knew about the Caribbean already and then saw how the images agreed with, or challenged their perceptions. The differences between life in the Caribbean 50-100 years ago and life in London today were a source of much discussion...

Project promo targeting young people in Haringey

For this one, we each had to think of four statements, three of which are true, and one of which a lie. Participants are tasked with identifying truth from mistruth...

Reminiscence work with the elders. The images stimulated some great conversation and revealed some interesting stories....the power of archives!!!
