βποΈ A Giant of Industrial History in the Heart of Winter π§π’βοΈ
βHappy Friday to my wonderful global community! πβ¨ From the scenic shores of Whidbey Island π²π to the hills of Georgia π and the great state of Michigan β; and across the ocean to my friends in Ireland βοΈ, Serbia π·πΈ, Romania π·π΄, and Lyon π«π·! πΊοΈβ€οΈ
βToday, Iβm taking you to the Old Port of Montreal π¨π¦. Behind this powerful tugboat bravely breaking the St. Lawrence River ice, stands a legendary monument: Silo No. 5. π’βοΈβοΈ
βBuilt between 1903 and 1958, this concrete colossus is a vestige of an era when Montreal was the largest grain exporting port in the world. πΎπ’ Did you know that its raw, functional architecture fascinated modern movement pioneers like Le Corbusier? ππ’ For them, these silos were the "cathedrals of the industrial age." βͺοΈποΈβ¨
βToday, Silo No. 5 is a protected heritage site. It stands silent and majestic under the snow, a witness to the historic economic power of the Quebec metropolis, while maritime life continues to pulse despite the deep freeze. π§π¨βοΈ
βI wish you all a magnificent Friday, wherever you are in the world! πβοΈ May your weekend be as solid, resilient, and inspiring as these giants of steel and concrete! ποΈπ‘οΈπ

in the spirit of heated rivalry...my favourite queer sports books
(except none of them are smut sorry)
Icebreaker by A.L. Graziadei π Basically YA heated rivalry. Follows two hockey players, who currently play on the same college team, fighting for the league's top draft spot. Do they hate each other? Are they obsessed with each other? Is it a secret third thing?
ya romance: mlm rivals to lovers, well written, Black mc, great side characters !!
One of the Boys by Victoria Zeller π When Grace transitions, she leaves behind her friend group of football players and the sport that could have led her to a D1 scholarship. But when her team begs her to come back and play, the door to college football swings back open. Grace will have to decide how much of herself she's willing to give up for the game she loves.
ya coming of age: trans girl mc + trans author, super well written, SO SO underrated, and so needed in these times. trans women belong in sports
Beartown by Fredrik Backman π Maybe the best book ever written about hockey. It's about a small, struggling town deep in the forest, whose economic hopes are pinned on their junior hockey team. When the star player commits an egregious act of violence, the fallout affects every member of the town.
adult contemporary: about friendship, violence, loyalty, community, and what it takes to speak up. like all hockey media should, it goes into the atrocities of "hockey culture". major tw for rape
Running with Lions by Julian Winters β½οΈ Bisexual soccer captain Sebastian Hughes, should be excited about his senior year. But when his estranged childhood best friend Emir shows up to training camp, Sebastian realizes the team's success may end up in the hands of the one guy who hates him. Determined to bring his team together, he sets out to regain Emir's trust and ends up getting more than he expected.
ya coming of age/romance: Black author + mc, childhood best friends to "enemies" to teammates to lovers, more or less angst-free romance

I wanna talk about the Icebreaker adaptation news and how people are kind of focusing on the WRONG things here.
So we all know that hockey romance is having a moment right now on television and with the popularity of Off Campus and the news of an Icebreaker TV show, Heated Rivalry fans have taken it upon themselves to point out that the hockey is probably the thing that contributed the least to the shows success (theyβre not wrong btw).
The problem is that theyβre forgetting one important thing: when news of a showβs production is hitting the news, itβs already been in the works for MONTHS.
Industry news is not the same as political news, studios are not obligated to release information to make the public aware. They pay whole publicity teams to tell them when the best time to release any piece of production news because they want to most engagement, to guarantee more eyes on production, so they can bank on large viewing numbers.
Studios are not sitting around copying each otherβs homework, trend cycles (i.e. HOCKEY ROMANCE) exist outside of their producing power and they are often playing catch up to what being pitched to them.
The moral of this story is that we should uplifting media that decenterβs straight, cis men as their core audience rather than pit television shows against each other.
Heated rivalry this, off campus that, icebreaker blah blah. No one talks about the og hockey romance movie.
βItβs a pleasureβ circa 1945 (on prime)
βDon Martin's career in ice hockey screeches to a halt when he punches a referee. Banned from the sport for life, he is consoled by Chris Linden, a lovely skater who performs for the crowd during the hockey games' intermissions.
Chris has a crush on Don and introduces him to Buzz Fletcher, who runs an ice-skating revue. Don joins the show as a performer
