The spot the Saburovs have claimed in my heart is so like the first bit of fig to soften from rot; I just saw someone graphically detail the violence they wanted to inflict on Sasha & reading it made me ☹️ as if my actual friend was being described, I nearly blocked 😭

Karminsky, plain as day, sensed that Saburov thinks in absolutes; Katerina herself withholds information from him because she's seen how easily his definitive philosophy confuses hims. She understands how torn he’d find himself between his sense of duty and his love for her: precisely the dilemma repeated here.

I've yet to see any acknowledgment of the struggle Saburov puts up to reconcile his evident love for Clara with his responsibility to the community, which forbids the luxury of prioritizing personal relations—on which the Inquisitor preyed. Saburov walked away ashamed but, more importantly, having relinquished a loved one.
