The unicorn uses their horn to turn one’s best memories (falling in love, greatest achievements, happiest days) into golden clocks and watches. These are worth a fortune but are very delicate and feature detailed Art Nouveau-inspired ornaments. Once a memory takes the form of a clock, the person no longer has that memory. It's wiped and kept within the timepiece. They can sell the clock to gain a fortune, but they'll be stripped of their memories in the process. The happier the memory, the more expensive the clock. Each one takes a unique shape that references the specific events of the memory.

Edit: Now available in Google Doc format if you don't have a Tumblr account 🥰
Hello, my name is Tofu and I'm a professional pixel artist. I have been supporting myself with freelance pixel art since 2020, when I was let go from my job during the pandemic.
My progress, from 2017 to 2024. IMO the only thing that really matters is time and effort, not some kind of natural talent for art.
This guide will not be comprehensive, as nobody should be expected to read allat. Instead I will lean heavily on my own experience, and share what worked for me, so take everything with a grain of salt. This is a guide, not a tutorial. Cheers!
🔹 Do I need money?
NO!!! Pixel art is one of the most accessible mediums out there.
I still use a mouse because I prefer it to a tablet! You won't be at any disadvantage here if you can't afford the best hardware or software.
Because our canvases are typically very small, you don't need a good PC to run a good brush engine or anything like that.
✨Did you know? One of the most skilled and beloved pixel artists uses MS PAINT! Wow!!
🔹 What software should I use?
Here are some of the most popular programs I see my friends and peers using.
Stars show how much I recommend the software for beginners! ⭐
💰 Paid options:
⭐⭐⭐ Aseprite (for PC) - $19.99
This is what I and many other pixel artists use. You may find when applying to jobs that they require some knowledge of Aseprite. Since it has become so popular, companies like that you can swap raw files between artists.
Aseprite is amazingly customizable, with custom skins, scripts and extensions on Itch.io, both free and paid.
If you have ever used any art software before, it has most of the same features and should feel fairly familiar to use. It features a robust animation suite and a tilemap feature, which have saved me thousands of hours of labour in my work. The software is also being updated all the time, and the developers listen to the users. I really recommend Aseprite!
⭐ Photoshop (for PC) - Monthly $$
A decent option for those who already are used to the PS interface. Requires some setup to get it ready for pixel-perfect art, but there are plenty of tutorials for doing so.
Animation is also much more tedious on PS which you may want to consider before investing time!
⭐⭐ ProMotion NG (for PC) - $19.00
An advanced and powerful software which has many features Aseprite does not, including Colour Cycling and animated tiles.
⭐⭐⭐ Pixquare (for iOS) - $7.99 - $19.99 (30% off with code 'tofu'!!)
Probably the best app available for iPad users, in active development, with new features added all the time.
Look! My buddy Jon recommends it highly, and uses it often.
One cool thing about Pixquare is that it takes Aseprite raw files! Many of my friends use it to work on the same project, both in their office and on the go.
⭐ Procreate (for iOS) - $12.99
If you have access to Procreate already, it's a decent option to get used to doing pixel art. It does however require some setup. Artist Pixebo is famously using Procreate, and they have tutorials of their own if you want to learn.
⭐⭐ ReSprite iOS and Android. (free trial, but:) $19.99 premium or $$ monthly
ReSprite is VERY similar in terms of UI to Aseprite, so I can recommend it. They just launched their Android release!
🆓 Free options:
⭐⭐⭐ Libresprite (for PC)
Libresprite is an alternative to Aseprite. It is very, very similar, to the point where documentation for Aseprite will be helpful to Libresprite users.
⭐⭐ Pixilart (for PC and mobile)
A free in-browser app, and also a mobile app! It is tied to the website Pixilart, where artists upload and share their work. A good option for those also looking to get involved in a community.
⭐⭐ Dotpict (for mobile)
Dotpict is similar to Pixilart, with a mobile app tied to a website, but it's a Japanese service. Did you know that in Japanese, pixel art is called 'Dot Art'?
Dotpict can be a great way to connect with a different community of pixel artists! They also have prompts and challenges often.
🔹 So I got my software, now what?
◽Nice! Now it's time for the basics of pixel art.
❗ WAIT ❗ Before this section, I want to add a little disclaimer. All of these rules/guidelines can be broken at will, and some 'no-nos' can look amazing when done intentionally.
The pixel-art fundamentals can be exceedingly helpful to new artists, who may feel lost or overwhelmed by choice. But if you feel they restrict you too harshly, don't force yourself! At the end of the day it's your art, and you shouldn't try to contort yourself into what people think a pixel artist 'should be'. What matters is your own artistic expression. 💕👍
◽Phew! With that out of the way...
🔸"The Rules"
There are few hard 'rules' of pixel art, mostly about scaling and exporting. Some of these things will frequently trip up newbies if they aren't aware, and are easy to overlook.
🔹Scaling method
There are a couple ways of scaling your art. The default in most art programs, and the entire internet, is Bi-linear scaling, which usually works out fine for most purposes. But as pixel artists, we need a different method.
Both are scaled up x10. See the difference?
On the left is scaled using Bilinear, and on the right is using Nearest-Neighbor. We love seeing those pixels stay crisp and clean, so we use nearest-neighbor.
(Most pixel-art programs have nearest-neighbor enabled by default! So this may not apply to you, but it's important to know.)
🔹Mixels
Mixels are when there are different (mixed) pixel sizes in the same image.
Here I have scaled up my art- the left is 200%, and the right is 150%. Yuck!
As we can see, the "pixel" sizes end up different. We generally try to scale our work by multiples of 100 - 200%, 300% etc. rather than 150%. At larger scales however, the minute differences in pixel sizes are hardly noticeable!
Mixels are also sometimes seen when an artist scales up their work, then continues drawing on it with a 1 pixel brush.
Many would say that this is not great looking! This type of pixels can be indicative of a beginner artist. But there are plenty of creative pixel artists out there who mixels intentionally, making something modern and cool.
🔹Saving Your Files
We usually save our still images as .PNGs as they don’t create any JPEG artifacts or loss of quality. It's a little hard to see here, but there are some artifacts, and it looks a little blurry. It also makes the art very hard to work with if we are importing a JPEG.
For animations .GIF is good, but be careful of the 256 colour limit. Try to avoid using too many blending mode layers or gradients when working with animations. If you aren’t careful, your animation could flash afterwards, as the .GIF tries to reduce colours wherever it can. It doesn’t look great!
Here's an old piece from 2021 where I experienced .GIF lossiness, because I used gradients and transparency, resulting in way too many colours.
🔹Pixel Art Fundamentals - Techniques and Jargon
❗❗Confused about Jaggies? Anti-Aliasing? Banding? Dithering? THIS THREAD is for you❗❗ << it's a link, click it!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE tutorial of all time for understanding pixel art. These are techniques created and named by the community of people who actually put the list together, some of the best pixel artists alive currently. Please read it!!
🔸How To Learn
Okay, so you have your software, and you're all ready to start. But maybe you need some more guidance? Try these tutorials and resources! It can be helpful to work along with a tutorial until you build your confidence up.
⭐⭐ Pixel Logic (A Digital Book) - $10
A very comprehensive visual guide book by a very skilled and established artist in the industry. I own a copy myself.
⭐⭐⭐ Saint11 Tutorials - free
A collection of visual tutorials, by the artist that worked on Celeste! When starting out, if I got stuck, I would go and scour his tutorials and see how he did it.
⭐ Lospec Tutorials - free
A very large collection of various tutorials from all over the internet. There is a lot to sift through here if you have the time.
⭐⭐⭐ Cyangmou's Tutorials - free (tipping optional)
Cyangmou is one of the most respected and accomplished modern pixel artists, and he has amassed a HUGE collection of free and incredibly well-educated visual tutorials.
He also hosts an educational stream every week on Twitch called 'pixelart for beginners'.
⭐⭐⭐ Youtube Tutorials - free
There are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on YouTube, but it can be tricky to find the good ones.
My personal recommendations are MortMort, Brandon, and AdamCYounis- these guys really know what they're talking about!
🔸 How to choose a canvas size
When looking at pixel art turorials, we may see people suggest things like 16x16, 32x32 and 64x64. These are standard sizes for pixel art games with tiles. However, if you're just making a drawing, you don't necessarily need to use a standard canvas size like that.
What I like to think about when choosing a canvas size for my illustrations is 'what features do I think it is important to represent?' And make my canvas as small as possible, while still leaving room for my most important elements.
Imagine I have characters in a scene like this:
I made my canvas as small as possible (232 x 314), but just big enough to represent the features and have them be recognizable (it's Good Omens fanart 😤)!! If I had made it any bigger, I would be working on it for ever, due to how much more foliage I would have to render.
If you want to do an illustration and you're not sure, just start at somewhere around 100x100 - 200x200 and go from there.
It's perfectly okay to crop your canvas, or scale it up, or crunch your art down at any point if you think you need a different size. I do it all the time! It only takes a bit of cleanup to get you back to where you were.
🔸Where To Post
Outside of just regular socials, Twitter, Tumblr, Deviantart, Instagram etc, there are a few places that lean more towards pixel art that you might not have heard of.
⭐ Lospec
Lospec is a low-res focused art website. Some pieces get given a 'monthly masterpiece' award. Not incredibly active, but I believe there are more features being added often.
⭐⭐ Pixilart
Pixilart is a very popular pixel art community, with an app tied to it. The community tends to lean on the young side, so this is a low-pressure place to post with an relaxed vibe.
⭐⭐ Pixeljoint
Pixeljoint is one of the big, old-school pixel art websites. You can only upload your art unscaled (1x) because there is a built-in zoom viewer.
It has a bit of a reputation for being elitist (back in the 00s it was), but in my experience it's not like that any more. This is a fine place for a pixel artist to post if they are really interested in learning, and the history.
The Hall of Fame has some of the most famous / impressive pixel art pieces that paved the way for the work we are doing today.
⭐⭐⭐ Cafe Dot
Cafe Dot is my art server so I'm a little biased here. 🍵
It was created during the recent social media turbulence. We wanted a place to post art with no algorithms, and no NFT or AI chuds. We have a heavy no-self-promotion rule, and are more interested in community than skill or exclusivity.
The other thing is that we have some kind of verification system- you must apply to be a Creator before you can post in the Art feed, or use voice. This helps combat the people who just want to self-promo and dip, or cause trouble, as well as weed out AI/NFT people.
Until then, you are still welcome to post in any of the threads or channels. There is a lot to do in Cafe Dot. I host events weekly, so check the threads!
⭐⭐/r/pixelart
The pixel art subreddit is pretty active! I've also heard some of my friends found work through posting here, so it's worth a try if you're looking.
However, it is still Reddit- so if you're sensitive to rude people, or criticism you didn't ask for, you may want to avoid this one. Lol
🔸 Where To Find Work
You need money? I got you! As someone who mostly gets scouted on social media, I can share a few tips with you:
Put your email / portfolio in your bio
Recruiters don't have all that much time to find artists, make it as easy as possible for someone to find your important information!
Clean up your profile
If your profile feed is all full of memes, most people will just tab out rather than sift through. Doesn't apply as much to Tumblr if you have an art tag people can look at.
Post regularly, and repost
Activity beats everything in the social media game. It's like rolling the dice, and the more you post the more chances you have. You have to have no shame, it's all business baby
Outside of just posting regularly and hoping people reach out to you, it can be hard to know where to look. Here are a few places you can sign up to and post around on.
/r/INAT
INAT (I Need A Team) is a subreddit for finding a team to work with. You can post your portfolio here, or browse for people who need artists.
/r/GameDevClassifieds
Same as above, but specifically for game-related projects.
Remote Game Jobs / Work With Indies
Like Indeed but for game jobs. Browse them often, or get email notifications.
VGen
VGen is a website specifically for commissions. You need a code from another verified artist before you can upgrade your account and sell, so ask around on social media or ask your friends.
Once your account is upgraded, you can make a 'menu' of services people can purchase, and they send you an offer which you are able to accept, decline, or counter.
The evil websites of doom: Fiverr and Upwork
I don't recommend them!! They take a big cut of your profit, and the sites are teeming with NFT and AI people hoping to make a quick buck. The site is also extremely oversaturated and competitive, resulting in a race to the bottom (the cheapest, the fastest, doing the most for the least).
Imagine the kind of clients who go to these websites, looking for the cheapest option. But if you're really desperate...
🔸 Community
I do really recommend getting involved in a community. Finding like-minded friends can help you stay motivated to keep drawing. One day, those friends you met when you were just starting out may become your peers in the industry. Making friends is a game changer!
Discord servers
Nowadays, the forums of old are mostly abandoned, and people split off into many different servers. Cafe Dot, Pixel Art Discord (PAD), and if you can stomach scrolling past all the AI slop, you can browse Discord servers here.
Twitch Streams
Twitch has kind of a bad reputation for being home to some of the more edgy gamers online, but the pixel art community is extremely welcoming and inclusive. Some of the people I met on Twitch are my friends to this day, and we've even worked together on different projects!
Browse pixel art streams here, or follow some I recommend: NickWoz, JDZombi, CupOhJoe, GrayLure, LumpyTouch, FrankiePixelShow, MortMort, Sodor, NateyCakes, NyuraKim, ShinySeabass, I could go on for ever really... There are a lot of good eggs on Pixel Art Twitch.
🔸 Other Helpful Websites
Palettes
Lospec has a huge collection of user-made palettes, for any artist who has trouble choosing their colours, or just wants to try something fun.
Rejected Palettes is full of palettes that didn't quite make it onto Lospec, ran by people who believe there are no bad colours.
The Spriters Resource
TSR is an incredible website where users can upload spritesheets and tilesets from games. You can browse for your favourite childhood game, and see how they made it! This website has helped me so much in understanding how game assets come together in a scene.
VGMaps
Similar to the above, except there are entire maps laid out how they would be played. This is incredible if you have to do level design, or for mocking up a scene for fun.
Game UI Database
Not pixel-art specific, but UI is a very challenging part of graphics, so this site can be a game-changer for finding good references!
Retronator
A digital newspaper for pixel-art lovers! New game releases, tutorials, and artworks!
Itch.io
A website where people can upload, games, assets, tools... An amazing hub for game devs and game fans alike.
A few of my favourite tools: Tiled, PICO-8, Pixel Composer, Juice FX, Magic Pencil for Aseprite
🔸 The End?
This is just part 1 for now, so please drop me a follow to see any more guides I release in the future. I plan on doing some writeups on how I choose colours, how to practise, and more!
I'm not an expert by any means, but everything I did to get to where I am is outlined in this guide. Pixel art is my passion, my job and my hobby! I want pixel art to be recognized everywhere as an art-form, a medium of its own outside of game-art or computer graphics!
This guide took me a long time, and took a lot of research and experience. Consider following me or supporting me if you are feeling generous.
And good luck to all the fledgling pixel artists, I hope you'll continue and have fun. I hope my guide helped you, and don't hesitate to send me an ask if you have any questions! 💕

How to draw Simple Grass for a game
Hue Shifting
‘While bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and “they’ll know where the hook is inside that fish,” Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. “They can ‘see’ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.”
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outside—but on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Gol’din has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlers—showy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but that’s unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.’
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.

Adela:ok so. honesty's sake, i gotta state, im doing adela on the "this character is interesting but nothing comes to mind because theyre not one of my blorbos so i have to do actual analysis" pass, if it helps lessen the sting to adela fans i am also doing chiara on this pass. you want to know something funny? i am running into the EXACT issue i ran into on my "these characters seem really obvious but i have to research this to know" pass (so like fiora elena and athletic company) where colleges have Chess Programs APPARENTLY. fuck me gently with a chainsaw. anyway, if adela went to college i get the feeling she'd get an economics degree. like she wants to ensure she sticks it to her parents vis a vis money management. or data analytics, which probably would be more useful to her chess champion thing
Adriana: honestly i considered leaving hers blank. not the most setup punchline of the list but it's close! vis a vis what she Should Be Doing Instead i think i've been seen suggesting she get into stuff like foresting or like. using fire for pyrotechnics and ergo entertainment instead of just arson. and thats all still pretty fair. i like it when someone does a twist on their old bad habits
Aiden:aiden really does not strike me as somebody who'd go to college. but. i knew this guy who went into compsci, obviously because i knew him from college, but he actually had a degree in a WILDLY different field and only went into compsci because he wanted a job in this economy. i think aiden is the opposite energy where he goes to get a degree in some bullshit like graphic design with his crazy amount of job experience and someone asks him why and he's like "dunno. wanted to try something different"
Alex:pretty sure we have a hard canonical answer on this and he seems happy enough with his job so. skip
Arda: i know i just said this but with arda it's even more of a hard canonical answer. we know this with certainty. at least with alex it's like "what if he got an english degree while nobody was looking"
Aya:do cops in japan actually have to get degrees, unlike in the states where they famously just have a short course and then get to handle guns. i'd assume criminal justice. maybe she'd get one despite not needing it, she sounds like the type
Barbara: canonically has a medical degree, once that bullshit was up i think to make her robots she'd have to do engineering and compsci? i think there's specific degrees to making machinery but i cant think of how to look that up effectively and within an hour of rabbit holing
Bernice: i dont actually care enough about bernice to go double check if this is right but i think his backstory really does not allow a college experience? i feel like he became a hunter basically the second he was going to get employed, and he has that strong vibe of getting employed without even a gap year or considering college
Bianca: her dramatic ass is going into musical theater 1000%
Camilo: tbh some of these i am phoning in. i am phoning camilo in. he would obviously have a dance major degree and i don't think i care what other shit he did
Cathy:you know something. she objectively has a medical degree. but for a second i thought to myself, DOES she have it? like. do you know how competitive that shit is. how the hell did she get it. like are we certain. how the fuck did cathy survive college being.... cathy???
Celine:i gotta be real with you guys. i dont give a shit about celine. like i was praying her journals would bail me out of having to research what degrees you'd need for bombs and i felt so relieved when her journals went "no she was self taught and also she makes bombs using magic". im not as annoyed by her as i am felix because felix comes across as lazily written to me, while celine comes across as what you get when you try to write a character with a hyperfixation and don't stick the landing, yk? but yeah she canonically just. taught herself how to make bombs and then went into the military. so im bailed out of having to get into a government watchlist!
Chiara:side fact that doesnt matter i am writing this while jelloapocalypse playing danganronpa 2 is background noise and her japanese va is called kei maeda. and i went KOMAEDA?? like a loser. anyway onto the actual post's topic, i would feel bad sending chiara into college because yes it turns you into a commie but it also sucks the soul out of you. my thought on what i would have chiara pick up as a hobby that would help with her general psyche is that i would turn her thing of making evil dolls into her picking up doll modding but moreso as a sort of therapeutic thing of making something nice with her own hands, like a twist on her bad coping mechanisms becoming good ones. i think that'd be cute
Chloe:i think it's heavily implied she genuinely is just self taught at making her marionettes. i'm kinda noticing a pattern of all the newer characters being magically self taught on their craft though which is a brand new annoyance that i was not expecting to have??
Daniel:one of those "i could research the exact name of this but i know it exists and Dont Care" situations. i know there's specific majors for cutting hair. he probably did one of those, but he definitely also was that one student who excels yet HATES his teachers and thinks they're all stupid. he can't have majored in art because sissela canonically didnt think his art was very good by the way before someone brings this up. lmao. but tbh i think daniel would be happier if he redirected his great passion into an art degree i just doubt he even thinks that's an option
Echion: now even if his situation enabled going to college. look me in the fucking eye and tell me ECHION is going to college. like we don't really know his pre echion phase but i cant imagine giving him a cool arm turned him into a bitch, he had to already have been a bitch, you know??
Elena:ok so this is making me realize i don't fucking know how sports and degrees work together. i briefly looked it up and it doesnt SOUND like ice skating degrees are a thing but there ARE programs, in colleges, to enable it. so. i dont know how this shit works. the key trick is that i don't have a single dream profession that is sports based so i have not once checked this until right now
Eleven:it's hard because there are exactly two types of streamer. cellbit (youtuber as a teenager who somehow ascends from that so hard everybody forgets he was a youtuber when theyre not making jokes about his bad commercials) and jarvis johnson (computer science degree owner, real ass job history, somehow ended up doing shit like dhar mann bingo instead). so i would have to pick which one i think she fulfills best, right. my thought is that she might do a film-making course or something like that to know how to handle the filming of her stuff, but she would probably end up going back to streaming at some point you feel me. i guess i'm suggesting some weird mix of both types
Eva: i'm feeling major in fashion? it's hard because eva is not much of a character, i'm just going off my random vibe of "i think she'd like to make clothes, based on that bullshit she's wearing which she cannot have bought anywhere"
Emma: i am unable to imagine emma going to college. i'm pretty sure there's degrees that would help with stage magic but i am unable to imagine her getting those. weirdly i think if she DID go, she would instead do some shit like liberal arts or communication or english which would not really do jack shit for magic
Felix:majored in spear minored in poor
Fiora:so i briefly looked this up in order to know if fiora is filed under "her profession requires a specific degree and ergo we don't get to have fun" or "her profession doesn't actually require that specific of a degree so we get to have fun". there isn't really apparently such a thing as a fencing major, so i think we do get to have fun. in her journals they mention she was good at math, and aside from other stuff like her liking things neat and tidy we can assume that if she was getting a degree alongside her fencing training it would have to be exact sciences if you're not going predictable and saying she'd have something in sports or fitness. i think it'd be funny if she had a fucking degree in statistics for some reason so i propose that, with a minor in health/fitness because. yeah. she'd probably have it
Hart: as said by abby-dragon who rec'd this idea. hart probably majored in agriculture, minored in music, but REALLY SHOULD HAVE instead learned psychology. i don't really have any unique thoughts on her here. wish hart was a more cohesively written character
Hyejin:see, a thing about hyejin is that as i understand it, shamanism in korea is taken very seriously and you have to treat it respectfully (i do realize how ironic it SOUNDS for me as a person to be saying that but i don't respect christianism because of its colonial roots, i can respect religions and their rituals just fine when it's umbanda or judaism or indeed korean shamanism), so when it comes to her i always get conflicted between "her fatalism coming from her belief in fate is provably kind of harmful for her" and "the concept of fate is a loaded thing to criticize in her case specifically". so i kind of think to myself. when she grows up, should she still be a shaman? or should her arc be about finding her own path in life? i don't have a solution for this and ergo don't have a good answer on whether she would go to college. i guess just to have anything said, i think something unrelated she could do as a hobby i think she'd enjoy weirdly is throwing clay. making clay sculptures
Hyunwoo: hyunwoo is so aimless and wants to be An Adult so bad. i am so fucking certain he'd try to take law or some shit because it's an Adult Respectable Profession and burn out within a semester. anyway i think hyunwoo's ideal profession is teaching or sports coaching. as shown in the manhwa he's not great at complicated theory but he is otherwise a good enough teacher and that sort of thing is always cute. i'm a sucker for it, i know it's a cliche, i'm a sucker for it
Isol: im realizing that it's not ACTUALLY canon that isol didnt really get any education. he probably actually did go to some form of catholic school until MOK. which. oh boy. is that perhaps worse. when it comes to stuff like what he WOULD learn in college if he went, that's such a hard question because i feel like he would not go to college lmao. i do see him as someone who craves learning because he has these prodigy vibes though so he'd probably be doing a hundred different courses, none of which are even a little bit intended to help him get employed. im still enamored with the idea of isol becoming a gardener or florist btw the years did not change this
Jackie: is her being an undertaker actually canon. im going to check hold on. yeah lmao the journals dont seem to mention it. now im fucking wondering if that was some shit someone made up at me years ago, if this is some esoteric hidden knowledge from the mysterious black universe i've never read, or whatever. god im way too focused on that though............ can we just call it canon who cares............. (i think if she didnt go to college to get that sort of mortuary stuff you'd need to actually become an undertaker shed Not Go. im not sure she can withstand college at all even. she would kill her professor. people made jokes about me killing one of mine and i didnt even actually hate him that bad or have any general strong urge to murder, imagine if jackie got saddled with a bad professor too)
Jan: see the thing about all these fucking sports characters is that there aren't really sports majors. it's all some shit you either would have separate classes on or some shit you'd get mentored on. so it's way harder to make up your mind here. but i actually don't think jan would have a degree? i don't think he's against the idea, i think it's just a sort of "never really had the stars align for it" or "never really needed it and never specifically wanted it" situation where he went from his life struggle to kickboxing and none of those points really lead to college
Jenny: probably majored in drama, minored in musical theater or something like that
Johann: are. are there. courses. for priests. i don't know how becoming a priest works i just get the feeling there isn't one
JP: honestly i was just looking through the names to see what sparked anything, saw JP, and immediately laughed at the sheer idea of JP going to fucking college. if he ever "wanted" to get a computer science degree, he'd probably just hack into the classes to get that shit independently because he doesn't want to bother with an actual degree. lmao JP going to college..... setup punchline
Laura:ok so you know how in that last roll call post i couldnt suss out anything for laura and silent crane pulled out the hilarious "well all we know is that she likes wine so she uses social media to look at wine". this is a stupid bit i want to continue here. there are wine making courses. She Did One Of Those in her free time between thievery (i dont think you can go to college to become a thief so unlike my complaint with celine this one's fine)
Lenox: i would be AMAZED. what the fuck would a mafia woman major in?? gun????
Leon: see this case is sad because i like leon. but i got NOTHIN, baby. like vis a vis him being a swimmer i dont get the vibe he should be doing something else, you get me? like his latent gayness "enjoyment of cute things", a metaphor only rivaled by miraculous ladybug going "this clearly gay character writes comics about homoerotic tension between two knights, with his friend, and his mom says comics arent a respectable artform", doesnt really have atrition with that you feel me? but i will be fair, that florist leon skin is very very cute. i think he absolutely could be a florist and fall in love with a tattoo artist. to my understanding thats not something you go to college for though
Li Dailin: absolutely no way she'd go to college
Luke: i don't think his story really has any place to fit college in. i'm pretty sure most cleaning jobs are about job experience, not having a Degree In Cleaning. and. see above lenox what would a hitman major in, gun?
Magnus: probably thinks college turns you into a spineless liberal
Mai: fashion degree. this experiment roll call post shit is easy
Nadine: completely different reason to JP but i also looked at the idea of nadine going to college and went "lmao shes not doing that". she's got way too much self-taught vibes, she'd probably hate college
Nathapon: god could you imagine having to go to college when you have periodic memory loss. he MUST be self-taught. unless my guess of how it works (he only forgets things when Something Bad Happens) is correct and he actually remembered most of college through itself because he miraculously didnt have even one professor who yelled at him for having a subpar photo
Nicky: probably should be in the process of a drama major but i dont think thats canon. i actually don't mind her profession of choice
Rio:i know what you may be thinking. ahh she loves cats ergo my judgement of her profession would be vet. i actually do not like vets and would feel bad making her be one. i think you can do other shit if you like animals but people keep going ahh i should be a vet because i love (non-mutt, non-black) cats and (non-mutt, probably just meant golden retrievers and huskies) dogs! and if anybody brings me a non-perfect "non-cute" pet i'm gonna mistreat it and basically ensure it dies when it gets sick by not treating it and gaslighting its owner, like i'm cat-racist! in the same way that bully from high school decides she should be a nurse, or that "empath" decides she'd be a great psychologist, you get me? anyway i think she should actually be an architect but i wasted way too much time dunking on vets to explain that thought process, so :/
Rosalio:fun fact him and william are the ones i did DEAD LAST. mostly because in canon it's so unresolved i dont know what to even do. like idk if i buy that he's good to animals when he's the sort of guy he is. i also dont know if baseball is the thing they should do. idk!
Rozzi: apparently there are specialized confectionary degrees. thats what she'd do if she retired from being a merc
Shoichi: you want to know something funny. that one for funsies fic i mentioned has a bit that forced me to look up whether shoichi would go to college, so i hilariously had an answer to this but only months ago when i looked that shit up! i'm pretty sure what i settled on was that he has a business degree, if japan has minors then he'd have an economics minor. although i also recall that to be a stock broker you actually dont need a degree at all and i sort of went "shoichi looks like he'd have a degree". i truly do not feel like redoing that exact research, you feel me
Silvia:i don't think she could withstand college. like. she's written to be CARTOONISHLY adhd, you feel me. can you imagine silvia withstanding college? most people with adhd i've seen who went to college relate considering quitting a lot, i think she wouldn't last a month before going ugggg i gotta quitttttt
Sissela: i hear that a lot of self-taught artists end up feeling kind of choked by art professors who don't really "get" their style of art. sissela might have a similar issue weirdly. also i think she has way too hard a life for me to want to send her to college, she needs like FIVE gap years
Sua: i know there's degrees for becoming a librarian. she has Those. if english isn't one of those, freely include it in the bundle. i don't feel like looking it up and i don't recall sua having any interests other than Book, so like. at best something like a minor in creative writing if you want anything interesting
Tia: isnt she canonically an art major. similarly to sua she doesnt have a lot going on aside from her one hyperfixation though. maybe some weird shit like a minor in biology since she keeps MAKING ANIMALS
William: guess who only right this second wondered if his stamina skill referred to the innings in baseball. it is! ninth inning is the last one according to my vague wikipedia understanding of it. i wonder if someone from that part of the team is reading this right now thinking FINALLY. SOMEONE FUCKING NOTICED. I AM SO HAPPY. anyway you may be thinking i'll say he should be a gardener and while the fact that i already assigned two other dudes to flowers plays a part i actually dont know if i want that because they say he doesnt water them, meaning the only plant he might not kill over time is a cactus. i kind of want to call it at I Dont Know Man for him. idk. he seems to actually want to stick to sports though
Xiukai: now i know there are cooking degrees. and i think not only xiukai has extensive degrees on making food, i think if you doubted his skills in a more accusing-him-of-being-uneducated way he'd quote his entire CV at you. i doubt it's a thing he values more than his actual practical skill but i do think if you were enough of an ass he might pull out that gastronomy degree
Yuki:you know, yuki's canonically like this heir to this old money family. so they're probably gonna want him doing a business degree. but you want to know the funny thing. i think yuki would be like gah i don't want this business degree, i want an equally "profession your parents try to get you to be" sort of profession but im dramatic about it. like he wants heart of hearts to be a fucking surgeon but acts like damocles with the sword over him about it, you feel me
Zahir: you know how in hyejin's i mused on how i'm unsure of whether i'd be disrespecting someone's religion. i forget zahir is an example of this because for some reason they translated his god's name in english, making it sound like it's a made-up religion instead of sikhism which is a real ass fucking religion. like i did cursory research and from what i understood you would not translate vaheguru as mighty one either, it's usually translated more like wondrous one because it derives from an expression of wonder, it's at best circularly about how vaheguru is powerful and mighty so even if you ARE translating it, that is not a good translation, it's like if i was adapting a christian character and when adapting god capital g i was like "i'll call him this language's words for all-seeing one because they say god is omniscient" like buddy that is not the main thing that matters and you don't have to fucking translate it!!!! it's like they're inserting the christian idea of god as something you fear into a completely different religion!!!!!!!! the big idea with vaheguru is that he's good and defeats darkness with his light and he's awe-inducing not scary!!!!!!!!!!!. also zahir is part of the "written so inscrutably i have trouble getting in their head effectively" crew so i genuinely could not tell you what this man would be studying. like. idk. philosophy major. incredible that i phrased it like he doesnt have the aura of a philosophy major just emanating from him i almost rewrote this because in retrospect OBVIOUSLY zahir would be a philosophy major
So, about Jackie being an undertaker- I think I started that one back the days by making a joke that if she would've been one, it would be very ironic for her to have to sew up the very corpses she mangled. I don't think even BLACK UNIVERSE covers how exactly she makes ends meet, but I have a fun theory to suggest about her current occupation. What if she is, in fact, an unofficially employed construction worker? She has access to a lot of building equipment, after all, and she does wear a typical orange jumpsuit of someone in the trade. It's a job she could've gotten without any formal education, at it would've made it very easy for her to both hide the victims currently in torture (for example, on the off-limit construction sites) or stalk people without anyone noticing (memorizing locals schedules and picking up on potential easy victims during the shifts). If the gigs are sketchy and she's paid in old hard cash, her bosses might not ever see her documents, and she'd be able to disappear without a witness at any moment. Also, did I mention her being covered in scars?
On a side-note, I bet Emma seriously went to Clown College if she is, in fact, a professional magician.
Also, wasn't Leon canonically in the Navy? Or was it just his dad?
In fear of going on a rant, I personally stand Sissela being a taxidermist, because look me in the eye and explain for what other reason this woman knows how to shoot a gun. I don't even need to say that taxidermy thematically fits - like, come on, dryflower Sissela is a thing - but it would be so on brand with her to participated in an art form that strives to achieve an objective perfect representation of a living thing - meticulously stringing together a bouquet of dried flowers, pruning away the impurities, or evening out every feather on a magpie before carefully articulating the wings on a hand-carved foam form- it would be a literal reflection of the desire to maintain at least something perfectly preserved and undamaged. But also, I'm a taxidermist myself, so I'm hella biased on this one.
Oh right, think I'll throw these as a supplementary fun fact:
At the sunset of their career, athletes typically go into sports teaching educations. As for how to become one, typically it's covered by sport sections and specialized middle- and high schools. I even used to be in one myself, for a month! That was, indeed, a mistake.
Priests typically go to seminaries or study theology.
Magnus Carlsen, who definitely served as an inspiration for Adela Gro, did not pursue any higher education and fully focused on his chess career. The more you know.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is a special training on top of the military degree. But, fun fact, Explosive Engineering is a masters one can take on top of a normal civil engineering degree!
While you can take a major in viticulture or enology, making wine as a hobby is usually just a passed-on experience. Brewing alcohol is surprisingly uncomplicated process. You could even try it yourself today!
According to a fun little study, mobsters typically get an incomplete highschooler degree, so there's that for Lenox.
There are many special certificates for a variety of East Asian dishes that require an immense skill to prepare (such as Fugu Preparation License, you guessed it! But so are there some for grilling eels, for example), so I'll make a confident guess XiuKai got a few of those.
I'll be more tame with replies next time. Thanks for taking your time to write the post! Hope you're doing well.
First of the tutorials I made based on questions from my design account @cywofdesign
I got questions on Instagram about how I utilize shapes / shape language, but that's more difficult to put into words for me. I would love to make some kind of guide for that too in the future.
hands are tricky, one of the parts of dragon drawing that just did not make sense for me until it did
i will absolutely answer any further questions in the comments, and if any of you want personal help you can totally DM me! I'm just chilling and drawing dragons and figuring things out myself, y'know
