Vash's eating disorder fully codified as a coping mechanism that's tied to his survivor's guilt and his inferiority complex as a Plant who can't make anything. The way Vash SLAMS himself against the door when he hears the Plant is in pain. The way that Vash only starts getting treated well when he demonstrates that he can be of use!!!!!!!!!! VASH AS THE SIN-EATER FOR HIS ENTIRE SPECIES!!!!!!!!!!

In the English dub Luida calls what he does being a "doctor or a counselor" for the Plants. Biting biting biting biting. He's the emotional support twin.

And as soon as Vash's loyalty to humanity gets called into question, he becomes a monster again. His safety is tied to his usefulness and his harmlessness.
