Over the last several years, I've been reading all my Spider-Man comics, which, embarrassingly, is a lot. I got into collecting old comics around the same time, filling in an already large collection started in the mid-80s, so I was reading a lot of stuff for the first time and revisiting a lot of stuff for the first time in decades. I looked at all Spider-Man comics, plus an comics he guest starred in that I had. Generally speaking, I just read 1 a day, sometimes more. I split them up into groups, and when I finished a set, I'd do a drawing kind of summarizing that section.

A few months ago, I finished Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 1, everything I have from 1962-1998. That ended up being 52 drawings. And I felt like getting them all together here. Most of them feature a Spider-Man and maybe a villain copied directly from an artist in the period as a sort of tribute, but everyone else original to my drawing. I tried to make each one look like the art trends of time the comics are from as much as I could. My art tends to be more cartoony than you'd want for this sort of thing, but I tried to make things more "superhero-y" as I was able. Overall, I think they came out ok. I'm chipping away at the ASM Vol. 2 era now.

You read a lot of good comics and a lot more bad comics doing something like this, but it's fun to see how things evolved and changed over the decades. Alt text for each drawing details what comics it represents and what artist I copied the Spider-Man from, where applicable.

This absurdly long post is back, because I got 10 more of these drawings. This set starts with the reboot of the comics in 1999 and goes through 2003. The first one is for the terrible Spider-Man: Chapter One series, revamping Spider-Man's early days and making them worse. I amused myself by recycling images from my old drawings about the original material, updating the art to reflect the times. The rest go into the 2nd volumes of Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker: Spider-Man, with the usual guest appearances and stuff as I had them. A lot of the Spider-Men and some other figures are copied from John Byrne, John Romita, Jr., and Humberto Ramos. 3, 4 and 7 here are entirely original.

I also started mixing in issues of Ultimate Spider-Man to break things up, and I got 3 drawings from that series in this set. 1 and 3 have Spider-Mans referenced from Mark Bagley, the Venom in 3 is more loosely based on one of his drawings, and there's an obvious reference to the cover to Giant-Size X-Men 1 by Gil Kane down there.

Spider-Man beat Doctor Octopus by pantsing him mid-fight, it was a different time. Still having fun with these things, but man, trying to replicate early 2000s digital comics coloring is a lot more work than the old stuff.

Behold, it's 10 more of these. The coloring on these is getting pretty complicated. Most still feature a Spider-Man and maybe some other people copied from a real artist, altho an unusual 4 of them don't. But one is nothing but an experiment where everyone is copied Mark Bagley drawings, so that really swings it the other way. This one's hitting your big 2000s events like House of M and Civil War and the universally reviled One More Day. In lieu of my usual half-ass descriptions in the alt text, you can go look at these on my website for more detailed explanations of them if you're into that. I never thought I'd keep doing these this long, but I have a history of not knowing how to stop once I start doing something.

Oh man, 10 more of these! Same operating conditions as usual, main figures copied from the original artists in 1, 2, 6, and 9, the rest all original. A noteworthy exception being the 2nd-to-last one there. It features material from Ultimate Power, a miniseries which made me suffer through 9 issues of Greg Land "art." I figure since all he does is trace the same things over and over, what better way to honor him than tracing his art? It made me look at his terrible art for a long time and felt like a punishment, but it was the most spiteful thing to do, so I did it for the Ultimates, the Supreme Power team, Dr. Doom, FF and X-Men. Longer descriptions still available at my website. This brings me up to around 2010 in Spider-History. That's pretty crazy.
