Charlie and Husk: How to Do Therapy Right
With Husk working as the unofficial therapist (at Charlie's request) in S2 and Charlie appointing herself as head counselor at the end of S2, this makes me think that between the two of them they could learn a lot about being a better therapist from each other.
Husk is better than Charlie at listening to people and seeing through their facades/personas, calling them out and getting them to acknowledge their flaws:
Husk: That's bullshit. You get drunk and bitch about them all the time. Everyone likes to bitch to the bartender. I know everything about you and these motherfuckers at this point. [Gestures to Sir Pentious] That one. That one is an insecure buffoon whose lonely ass watches you idiots sleep! [Vaggie pounds her fist into her palm and glares at Sir Pentious as Husk gestures to Charlie.] Princess, is a bleeding heart who wants to solve everybody else's problems 'cept her own.
Charlie: What?! No, I-- what? Pffff, no, no... [Vaggie just stares at her silently.]
Husk: [to Vaggie] This one, [She turns her attention away from Charlie and scowls at Husk, growling under her breath.] judges everyone and everything because she hates herself.
Charlie is unable to do this, as she struggles with listening to others, conflict, and facing negative emotions, so she can’t always properly get to the root of people's struggles and empathize with them the way Husk can.
However, Husk has his own problems as a therapist in being far too negative:
Angel Dust: Ugh, I-I missed it. I've had a headache all day. But Husk seems to be enjoying the therapist shit. Says his "pretending to listen" skills are put to good use.
Baxter: It was very informative. I have never heard someone come up with so many ways to say "stupid." Adding a few to my personal dictionary.
[Cuts to the therapy session, Baxter is taking notes next to Husk.]
Rooster: (voice breaking) I just don't understand why she left me.
Husk: Well maybe... it's because you're a moronic, unthinking damn fool.
Baxter: (taking notes) "Damn fool"!
Husk: Who is too nonsensically doltish...
Baxter: (taking notes) "Doltish."
Husk: ...to realize that you're a mindless chuckle-fuck...
Baxter: (taking notes) "Chuckle-fuck."
Husk: With your constant gormless buffoonery. Maybe you should try not being a feeble-minded...
Baxter: (taking notes) "Fe-"
Husk: smooth-brain for once!
Baxter: (taking notes) "Smooth-brain."
Rooster: [voice breaking] Yeah. Maybe.
[The other sinners begin clapping for him while Husk leans over to whisper to Baxter.]
Husk: Am I doing therapy right?
Like, getting people to acknowledge their flaws is good, and sometimes you do need to be blunt but like, there is a bit more care and tact to be had in therapy beyond just insulting people and calling them a loser. He fails to give any positive or constructive feedback the way Charlie would, that inspires people to do and be more, the best examples of this being in her song "It Starts With Sorry" with Pentious and "Ready for This" with Cannibal Town:
And we do know both of their approaches have their merits, since Angel Dust started to open up more after Husk helped him realise it was okay to be a “loser”:
...and we know he was finding Charlie’s therapy sessions to be helpful:
Angel Dust: Uh, when you see her, can you ask if she's still up for the therapy session today? I'm kinda gettin' into talking about my feelings and junk
Not to mention even in Speedrun to Redemption, where Charlie is at her absolute worst in disrespecting Angel’s boundaries and not listening to him, the small, genuine part of Charlie expressing her sincere belief in Angel Dust being “far from shameful, just misunderstood” and his desire to improve himself does still resonate with him too.
Charlie offers him the hope and the chance to change for the better, Husk offers him empathy and acceptance of who he is currently.
What’s really ironic about thinking of the two interacting more/being therapists at the hotel is that they will probably be the ones needing therapy in S3. Husk is currently heartbroken (especially if the Valentine’s and Pride merch is anything to go by) at Angel’s departure after only just having realized his feelings, not to mention the pride merch has him not only looking forlornly (presumably at Angel Dust on the Vees stand) but also has him dressed as a bellhop, in close proximity to Alastor.
I bring this up because Alastor was mockingly referred to as the "bellhop" by Lucifer, and so I think this is foreshadowing for Alastor to continue to demean and belittle Husk as a "loser" even moreso, the way he is by others in positions of power, chiefly Rosie.
Meanwhile Charlie is going to be reeling from the return of Lilith and unpacking a lot of family trauma. Husk needs to have more hope and realise he doesn’t have to be a loser and can break his losing streak, while Charlie needs to face all the negative emotions she has been repressing, especially in regards to Lilith and the pain caused by her.
Basically this is just a roundabout way of me saying I hope they give each other therapy sessions, and maybe swap notes and give each other pointers on how to do therapy right.
I’d also like more Husk/Charlie interactions because since the song Love In A Bottle where the slot machines reveal “the cares that I’ve been overthinking” for Husk to be Charlie, Alastor and Angel respectively.
Alastor and Angel make sense since he’s Angel’s love interest and his soul is bound to Alastor, go figure those relationships are important to his character. Charlie I suppose is representative of the Hazbin Hotel itself, so she would be the best representation of all the other bonds Husk has formed while at the hotel. But I do think it Would Be Neat to develop some specific found family bonds at the hotel, especially with these two being capable of helping the other to grow/be better therapists, and to reach out to Angel.
