I identify with Shen Yuan's specific fan experience with PIDW because when I read SVSSS, I too couldn't give less of a fuck about the romance plotline and badly written porn, and frankly, I think the wife doesn't hold a candle to the protagonist. You may ask me, "Why are you reading this BL novel then?" And the answer is: several reasons!
I'm obsessed with the protagonist. (His narrative voice and status as an unreliable narrator are so fucking funny.)
The details, implications, and rules of the setting fascinate me to know end.
I actually do like many of the members of the protagonist's harem as well as the complicated dynamics amongst them as they vye for the protagonist's affection.
I, too, hold a lot of scorn for the antagonist's reprehensible actions, and while I find his eventual fate gratifying on a surface level, there's still something that feels somewhat hollow and disingenuous about it.
The challenge of "you can you up" is so laughably easy to accept and conquer that, if we're being honest, the original canon has on some level become obsolete EVEN TO THE AUTHOR OF THE NOVEL.

Funny (but accurate) comparisons aside, I love SVSSS, but I don't really fuck with Luo Binghe. As the functional antagonist of the book, I find him endlessly fascinating, and I also find the concept of the so-called "protagonist" serving as the antagonist to our protagonist, the so-called "scum-villain," really fucking cool. However, as a love interest, I have a hard time keeping my eyes in my skull from rolling them so hard.
Tbh, I don't give much of a fuck about bingqiu both in canon and fanon. The only time I think it's actually interesting as a romance is when you throw Liu Qingge into the romance pot to serve up some bingliushen.
My ship obsession, though, does go well fed, if not by canon, then definitely by fanon, with moshang, whatever that says about me. Idk. I just really appreciate a mutual but badly communicated obsession between a quiet stoic and a loud gremlin.
