every western movie ever made: The wild west is dying. theres no more room left for cowboys anymore…
me everytime: :(
every samurai movie ever made (both edo and bakamatsu periods): The bushido code is dying. there no more room left for samurai anymore…
me everytime: :(
A lot of westerns are remakes of samurai movies
those samurai movies were very often heavily inspired by 50′s and 40′s westerns
Cowboys and samurai are brothers separated by time and space.
Best duo.
I’ve got y’alls new favorite art piece right here.
According to Google, Samurai were abolished in 1868.
This means that at the same time that cowboys were reaching their end, so too were samurai.
Cowboys and Samurai were separated not by time, only space.
I’ve got something else to add to this: there’s also an extremely specific species of mushroom that can only be found in Texas and Japan. I’m serious.

The most ambitious crossover
Fantasy setting but it’s just Texas and Japan together at last
Mycelial portal between cowboys and samurai
just bc i post abt something doesnt mean id ever recommend it to anyone ever btw

i love how in one of your recent trick or treats, padme finds leia cute! And she will never let her know because. How she already responds to being called short. Haha.
Leia is very competent and very dangerous and when she lets down her guard around people they are suddenly like, "Oh. Smol. Soft. Cute." And it's a hard to earn privilege that will absolutely get you a death glare if you bring it up to Leia.
Shmi is of course the first person in this timeline to have discovered this quirk. Interestingly enough, it is Threepio who was the second, and honestly probably Sabé was the third, although she didn't get the significance at the time. Cordé missed out (sadly). Anakin would have been last, but Cody is still being difficult and has not earned the privilege.
Every time I see this joke it gets longer, firing another shot directly into the dad joke region of my brain.

The fact that magic exists in TMA canonly and Jon just. Never uses it ever is so funny.
Like Gertrude binds her soul to a leather woman, has some sort of magic protecting her, Leitner and his books, even the Keay family was doing fucked up shit. Jon just doesn't.
Adding on to this because Gertrude is literally the case of "What if you just brought a gun to a magic duel" and it's hilarious. Oh no, some loser fisherman is trying to summon his Loner god??? Tell the press, done. Meat ritual to summon meat god?? Bombs. A circus that steals people's skin trying to summon an evil clown god?? Bombs too. She adopted Gerry because she watched this young adult grab the world's most fucked up books and instead of experimenting on other people or keeping them in a fucked up library he just burned them. She was like yep, that's my son now. Fuck you, Mary.
IT'S NOT EVEN BECAUSE SHE CAN'T USE MAGIC. She can, and has done so REPEATEDLY. But hey, if a bomb can fix it, why would she bother dedicating herself to some other, equally bad, fear God? I hate/love Gertrude but this is just some queen shit.
I saw some weird ass conspiracy video thing today of like 'we were never meant to have access to yeast, that was cultivated in a lab and it harms us' bullshit and I was like well first off there's no such thing as 'meant to' and second of all um? the long history of acquiring yeast from beer foam stretching so far back ??????
....you can acquire yeast FROM THE AIR.
If you want to make sourdough started from scratch, the process is 'mix water, flour, and maybe sugar if you've got it, then WHIP IN AS MUCH AIR AS YOU CAN' and let it sit. And this works. Because there's yeast there. In the air.
Not only is there yeast in the air, it's on a bunch of fruits, too. Ever rubbed a blueberry, plum, or grape, and it was slightly darker underneath? That thin film is wild yeasts. There is also yeasts that live on human skin (and not just pathogenic ones!). We are never without yeasts.
You do not have access to yeast; yeast has access to you.
In ancient times people made bread by smashing grapes into the dough because grapes have high yeast content. Been meaning to try it some day.

i know this isn't the reguar theme of this blog but i need to share it somewhere because today someone called my local fire department because they found
a horse
and not only was it a not-dead horse, they dug it up and it was
a lil muddy, mostly
why bother caring about the environment when 1. It’s so obviously a lost cause and 2. There’s definitely going to be a nuclear war?
And what are you doing about it Anon? Learn about ecological restoration or get out of my way.
If you read ecology books printed in the 70s and 80s, they were absolutely convinced that whales and tigers would not survive the century. There's a whole plot in Star Trek about how whales are extinct actually. Here in Argentina, we were sure that yaguaretés would have gone extinct. It was thought that rainforests would be forever lost, because there was no way that such complex ecosystems would be restored.
Now, you can go to Península Valdés and find that the whale population there is growing year after year, people can see them from their windows. In Iberá, where yaguaretés were extinct for over 70 years, there's now a population of 35 and growing, after being reintroduced just five years ago. As for rainforests?
We've becoming very, very good on restoring them. Natural environments, when given space and time to heal, can return to that they were. And after all, all natural enviroments are managed by human societies. It is up to us to implement a good management, un buen gobierno.
I firmly believe our children and grandchildren will see a restoration of Earth like never before.
Millions of people are working on this. You can learn about it, perhaps even become one of them. Or be a pointless doomer in my ask box. Your choice.
if there are people who care, it's never a lost cause. at one point, kākāpō, a nocturnal flightless parrot species from aotearoa, were thought to be entirely extinct for decades. until 1977, where booming calls from males were heard on the small island of whenua hou. now, thanks to people who care so much they dedicated their lives to caring, kākāpō numbers are close to 300. despite the setbacks. despite the small gene pool causing infertility and health problems. people cared so fucking much that they survived. this is one of COUNTLESS, countless similar stories. I'm studying ecology so that I can go into conservation and all around me, every day, I see people who care enough to put years of their lives into learning about and solving environmental problems. I don't know man. hope isn't just some nebulous thing. it's tangible if you do something with it.
Tim Wong saw the decline of the pipeline swallowtail butterfly, and dedicated himself to providing habitat and raising babies, and it worked.
Spix's Macaws were extinct in the wild for 70 years, and now captive breeding and conservation groups have reintroduced a small population (with more on the way) and there are babies being successfully raised in the wild again.
And what else is there, but hope? We exist for the grace of hope. Those who have lost all hope don't stay here. If you are here to send an ask like this, it is not because you have given up, it's that you are hoping someone will show you that that hope is worth having.
It is!! It always is!!
There will be good things and if you cannot find them, make them! The time will pass anyway, you can choose what to do with it, and so many, many people are choosing to try to help.
Per @arinrowan's recommendation, I'm watching Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster.
And let me just say these Coast Guard guys at this hearing appear to be REALLY feeling this image:
#i listened to a ninety minutes podcast about the oceangate implosion and watched this ninety minute documentary #and there were SO MANY red flags and safety violations and mechanical failures the two had almost no overlap (tags via @arinrowan)
My chief takeaway after watching the Discovery channel thing: Stockton Rush was such an asshole.
It's not a matter of "we didn't know" or "exploration is risky". It's more like EVERYONE told you it was a bad idea but you did it anyway. Some of the interviews with ex-Oceangate employees were heartbreaking because they knew their boss was a jackass but were pressured into following the cult.
They stored their billion dollar submersible in a parking lot during the off season, exposed to the elements. For months at a time! Then they'd just hose the crud off, plunk it into the ocean with minimal testing, and descend 2.3 miles to the bottom of the ocean like it's a trip to the store. With paying passengers!
And then there's the whole "let's treat the Titanic mass gravesite as a tourist destination" angle that's disgusting. Rich assholes excited to go there like it's Disneyland. Video of Stockton Rush foaming at the mouth with excitement to see Titanic yet again for the 88th time.
Watching that show was like getting punched in the face every 30 seconds or so.
The parking lot scene was insane. Not even a tarp! They were storing that thing outside during a polar vortex and they couldn't even spring for a tarp!
I think what was most bewildering was how... sloppy, Oceangate was? Being convinced the submarine had to be made out of an unsafe and untested material that kept showing signs of weathering, fine. Not doing doing proper upkeep or testing, following minimal safety checks or maintenance, pre-launch doing such a poor job checking on the vehicle that they didn't check THE BOLTS WERE EVEN DRILLED IN?
It's clear to me that even if they had been working with a sub made from approved materials, an accident was inevitable.
I think the best part of Murderbot is its staunch belief that it’s average at its job, and it only does better because it doesn’t have a working governor module
It’s always like, I’m just a SecUnit, the only reason I’m better is because humans somehow have worse judgement than me in my very narrow field of expertise, and I have the ability to process multiple things at once, and I don’t die when I get my shit wrecked. None of these are advantages over other bots, so I’m actually just average as far as skills go.
Meanwhile, Murderbot’s track record is something like ‘regularly takes out other SecUnits, regularly hacks fairly complicated systems, takes out multiple hostiles while saving and protecting clients/hostages, beat two Combat Bots in succession, and went toe to toe with a Combat SecBot while taking out two other SecUnits, rounding it off with inhabiting spaceships and crushing the incredibly difficult and malicious killware infecting them.’
That’s not even counting the guts, skill, and determination it takes to hack your own hardware/code which is fully capable of frying your brain in the first place
Something I love is that a large chunk of Murderbot’s success is just - it literally asks for help?
There’s a line in Exit Strategy, “Bots are instructed to report and repel theft attempts, but no one ever tells them not to answer polite requests from other bots.”
Murderbot makes use of this a lot. It talks to other bots, like ART and Miki. It offers equal trades of assistance, like with the Combat SecUnit in Exit Strategy, SecUnit 3 in Network Effect, and the ComfortUnit in Rogue Protocol.
In Exit Strategy, it reached out to the human supervisors to get Dr. Mensah an opening to get onto the shuttle. Even at the very beginning, in All Systems Red, it warns the team about the external combat over-ride.
Murderbot makes itself out to be a natural loner, but ‘ask for help’ has literally been one of it’s go-to strategies since book 1. And I think that’s beautiful.
#murderbot would be very upset to know that its superpower is friendship (tags via hoarder-of-stories-27)
so true
A 14 year old girl flushing her miscarriage down the toilet can be charged with mutilating a corpse, but keeping a dead woman on life support for 120 days then cutting her open to extract a 2 pound fetus because her dead body was decaying too fast to sustain the pregnancy any longer is not only legal but compelled by law. America/the world/men hate women so much.
@userautumn adding your tags because they’re important:
Another important piece of context I haven’t seen enough people mentioning (because news stories are leaving it out): Adriana Smith’s family was forced to pay for this.
Adriana Smith’s family, while dealing with the grief of suddenly losing her and watching her body linger and knowing she would never wake up, watching her body being used as an incubator after being given no choice in the matter (and worth noting for so-called “pro-life” folks, Smith’s mother April Newkirk has said “I’m not saying that we would have chose to terminate her pregnancy. What I’m saying is, we should have had a choice.”), is also BEING BILLED for this indignity, this cruelty, this undoubtedly racially motivated miscarriage of justice.
And much of this at THE HOSPITAL SHE WORKED AT AS A NURSE - her coworkers, by choice or by “just following orders,” were the ones to perpetrate this disgusting removal of personhood and agency — after she went in (to another hospital) complaining of a headache and was dismissed with pain medication, with NO TESTS ORDERED BY HER DOCTOR. She was declared brain dead from blood clots the next day, and that’s also 100% the racism, sexism, and ESPECIALLY misogynoir of the American medical field at work.
This article from Ms. Magazine is very good. Here is Adriana’s family’s GoFundMe if you are able to help. Here’s a 2024 article from Georgetown on medical misogynoir. If anyone has other reading suggestions, please add them.

FUCKING PREACH
It’s all about control, sexism, racism, it’s not about babies or lives or the Bible
Okay, but I've seen this argument thrown around for years, and I never believed it because it's been pushed into my brain since I was a child by my extremely Christian parents that abortion is fundamentally evil because it goes against the Bible. But I'm taking a 2nd Wave Feminism course and I finally found out that this is actually 100% true? Until the Reagan campaign and associated Republican politicians tried to find another social issue to sway Southerners, especially Southern women, in their favor, abortion was not a primary issue for churches. It was only when feminists started mobilizing and, as a result, many institutions such as the Catholic church tried to mobilize against them that churches started advocating against abortion. Abortion did not become an issue of morality for the right until the 70s. Before then, abortion was simply not discussed because most things relating to sex weren't publicly discussed. So no, according to popular belief, the argument that abortions are killing babies did not always exist, it was just an argument crafted when the Republican party needed another social group to oppress for political points
As someone from the rural south, I actually don’t mind evil Republican Californian transplants. It’s kind of funny to witness them crash out after realizing there are no sidewalks and the nearest hospital is an hour and a half away. Maybe if enough of them vacate the state, the cost of living will go down and I can move there.
I used to live in an area that was somewhat scenic and had an undercurrent of tourism but was still extremely rural and poor. It was so funny to see transplants in the regional Facebook group making posts like “Does anyone know any good jogging paths in the area?” only to be met with a unanimous “No.”
There was someone who was like “I’m thinking of retiring to [AREA]. How quickly could the ambulance reach [AREA] in an emergency?” and everyone was like “It would take an hour or more. Do not retire here if you plan on ever getting sick.”
The funniest part was that the locals were not being dicks, there was a huge culture shock from these people who had lived in wealthy urban/suburban areas and were now trying to survive in the middle of nowhere. If you wanted resources and things to do and a decent quality of life, you should have stayed where you were. We’re living the libertarian unpaved road no emergency services dream over here.
“Does anybody know of any good restaurants in the area?” “There are two. Two restaurants in a 50 mile radius. One is pretty good but it is only open on Wednesdays and Fridays. The other is fucking disgusting but it is cheap and always open. Hope this helps.”
I talked to someone from an area of Tennessee that has seen a LARGE amount of Cali Republicans move in, and they told me some hilarious things.
The area of Tennessee they moved to is known for having Rich White Racist Tennesseeans. It is the richy white area of a part of the state that is, honestly, pretty poor. These Rich White Tennesseeans are so used to being the richest in the area. They flaunt their wealth and their money and think they are the most important people of all time.
They found out real quick that being Rich in California is different than being Rich in Tennessee.
They had an influx of Republican Californians come in and buy up all the real estate at above market prices. Like, genuinely, look up the difference in housing prices in Tennessee and California. The Californians swooped in and flashed their money and bought these MASSIVE homes and made the housing market price for the area SKYROCKET. Not only that, but they paid a bunch to the private schools in the area to let their kids in. Which meant some of the Tennessee Rich kids...got cut from the program. The Tennessee kids might have to *gasp* go to a public school!
It led to a whole MELTDOWN at the townhalls. They were BEGGING local government to do something about the influx of these Cali Rich Republicans. Absolute shouting matches at the local gov level. They couldn't STAND the thought of them not being the richest fish in the ponds.
According to the person I talked to, it has been hilariously entertaining watching the meltdown with the rich Tennesseeans. The Cali Republicans are completely BAFFLED by the negative treatment they have gotten by the locals. They thought that Tennessee would be the Racist Promised Land, but now they are getting treated poorly by the other rich white people. And the normal people have not been all that affected. Like, probably couldn't have afforded 5 bedroom 4 bath houses anyway. I would hazard a guess that overall inflation for the area got a bit worse, though.
But yeah, the person who told me this was cackling. And it is a bit funny. Hope they bite each others dicks off.
I wish I could remember the blog and read it on, but was some version of a farm blogger talking about all of the rich people moving into their rural area. Jogging with their strollers down the highways with no sidewalks. Driving their Palisade at 80 miles an hour on one and a half lane country roads. Thinking that they can still have their city lifestyle but the largest town in an hour's drive has 5000 people.
"Honey, we have quarter million dollar harvesting combine that we only use 2 weeks out of the year. We aren't impressed."
