If you liked both Project Hail Mary AND Iron Lung, may I offer a movie rec?
Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, Benedict Wong, Hiroyuki Sanada, Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, Rose Byrne, Mark Strong and my beloved Cillian Murphy.
Summary: The Sun is dying and the Earth is frozen over. The world got together and created a giant nuclear bomb to "restart" the star with the mission Icarus I - but right when they were supposed to launch the bomb, they just went radio silent. Icarus II is carrying a second bomb and is the last chance humanity has, since there's no more resources for a third mission.
Almost at the Sun, they intercept the Icarus I distress signal.
It's a horror movie, although in my opinion is 90% suspense and very interesting ideas about the crew going slowly crazy. Then the last 15 minutes is straight up a slasher.
Why recommend to the bloodymary fandom?
Space horror. In space, no one can hear you scream. Big stakes and tension when something goes wrong.
Like Iron Lung, there's a recurring idea about going insane in space, and some existential horror (don't want to elaborate, for spoiler reasons).
Finding a previous crew and figuring out why their mission failed.
The desperation about realizing it's a suicide mission and there's no going back home.
WARNINGS: Some graphic gore (at the end) (someone's arm gets skinned). Another character cuts their wrists (is not shown when it happens, but afterwards).
This movie is one of my favorite space horror, next to Event Horizon (although that one aged poorly). This one is soooo good and you can't even tell is from 2007. Any CGI holds perfectly fine, and is mostly practical effects. The acting is good and you can really feel for the characters.
My only criticism is the slasher ending. I just don't like slashers.
But the concept of the Sun, the brightness, as a horror element intrigues me.
Anyway i'm probably not selling it well, but I really keep remembering this movie whenever talking about PHM and Iron Lung, so I thought I could throw it out there.
