Villain expected this to go bad, meeting the person who cut them off so long ago. Confront them about this lie wouldnât be easy⊠If it hadnât been for Vigilante this wouldnât have been necessary. âHenchman, are we there soon?â
Checking the map real quick they nodded, ânot far now⊠Vigilante how did you even end up in the city?â
Vigilante shivered in the backseat leaning on the door, âI grew up in the city⊠She moved like a year later, I think.â The sadness in their voice was hard to miss and it made Villain furious to know that they had to live out such an injustice. âAfter a week alone on the street, I was picked up by the system and⊠Letâs just say being treated like an orphan is much better than being asked constantly what you did to be kicked out.â
Henchmanâs jaw tensed, âdoesnât feel so great repeating how the one who raised you is dead either, buddy. But I kind of see your point.â Both of them knew everything by now and Henchman had taken it fairly well, a little surprised. Vigilante hadnât considered everything so much yet⊠The siblings did play fair enough with each other though.
âSorry⊠I didnât mean toâŠâ
âDonât worry, it wasnât so bad for me,â Henchman said, breaking the sentence off for Vigilante. Knowing Henchman was probably true, getting to know Henchman had been the best years of their life. âItâs not too late to turn back, ifâŠâÂ
Villain turned back to look at Vigilante, curling up in himself. But shaking their head, âThis is probably gonna be hard, but⊠It has to be done.â Never had anything been so hard to do.
The forest had been switched to a suburban area, the houses looked nice and colorful. Seemed like a place for a peaceful family, âthatâs the placeâŠâ Stopping in front of a house, one car outside of the garage. A few lights lit in the house, âaccording to my intel she should be home alone. The rest should either be in school or work.â Henchman informed with the phone in hand.
Villain turned back and reached a communication device Vigilante, âyou can come with me if you want.â
âI donât want to see herâ Vigilante put the earpiece in their ear, they would hear everything. Nodding and leaving the car. Every step was heavy and turning, seeing them talking in the car.
Knocking on the front door with crossed arms, waiting for the steps to come closer and the door to finally open. The one to open was an older version, slightly tired of the woman they had shared everything with. âHello, it has to be at least 10 years since last.â Villain greeted and she tensed seeing them at their front door. Villain needed to force out the shake from their voice.
âVillain⊠HowâŠâ She stumbled over the words and with a charming smile Villain pushed themselves inside. Noticed the pictures in the hall, her hugging a partner they recognised from Vigilantes family photo.
They sighed and made it even further in, âseems like you made it pretty nice for yourself.â
The door shut behind her, âtook me a while to make myself whole again after everything you did.â They were surprised to discover her poisonous tone, suddenly she seemed collected and the hatred was clear. âYou cheated on me.â
âI didâ Villain wouldnât even deny it. âYears later I got the word that she was pregnant and got a child.â
Villain nodded, smiling and the thought of Henchman always warmed their hearts. âToo bad I couldnât be part of their childhood, it would probably do me some good.â
She made a tsk sound and looked at her with crossed arms, âmaybe⊠But I donât see how that would have made any difference for you.â They observed the well placed photos of her family; there were few of Vigilante. âWhat are you doing?â
âI canât help but notice one person missing in this family photo, arenât there 4 children in total?â Villain studied the big photo over a fireplace. She looked like she wanted to throw them out of her house. âHow long have you been with that guy?â
Her eyes turned to her partner, âI donât see what you have to do with it.â
âCanât be more than 26 years, am I right?â Villain controlled the conversation and she started to suspect where this was going. Huffed annoyed and her cheeks turned a little red.Â
She looked around, like she made sure they were alone or that she had somewhere to escape. âThere is someone missing, youâre right. It is your addition to this family.â
Villain straightened up and glared at her. She had deliberately held back the information. Wanted to hurt them as they had hurt her. But she hadnât only hurt them in the process, they had hurt Vigilante. âGo on,â Villain had to force themselves calm enough to speak and not lash out at her.
âBut he is no longer here, and hasn't been part of this family for a long time now.â There was not a sign of her missing the son she had abandoned or even cared for his well-being either.
He tensed and had to hold his nerves in check not to do anything he would regret. âYou abandoned him, why? Because he was my son? He is also your son.âÂ
She crossed her arms, âhe was too much of you.â She paused, âin the end, I did the only thing I could do.â
Villain was about to speak, saying that she was wrong. But the door slammed open as Vigilante suddenly was inside of the house, with tears, anger, and everything in between pushing her into the wall. Not letting go and nearly grabbing the knife. âYou gave up on meâŠ! Did you even care what happened after you left me?â He almost screamed, a scream muffled by the thick voice as tears fell without control.Â
Villain touched Vigilante's shoulder, but they didnât let go. âDONâTâŠâ they exclaimed at the touch, maybe this wasnât such a good idea. Vigilante looked like he was gonna fall apart any time, âI know⊠I know they called you from the orphanage, I hoped you would come back for me. But you never didâŠâ He didnât say anything more and Villain was in shock. She had known where he ended up, that the boy had had hope still. She had crushed it without any mercy, his hand twitching to grab the knife.Â
âVigilanteâŠâ Villain tried to pull him back, but he just pushed her closer into the wall.Â
âI guess you finally figured out what to do with me, nothing. Because I was hopeless, wasnât I, mother?âVigilante continued as he spiraled down, âunlike the rest, I wasnât worth itâŠâ
She looked at the son she had abandoned in disbelief, fear and⊠It was pure fear in her eyes.
âYou have nothing to say to me?!â Vigilante asked her, pressing harder now. His hands were shaking.
She answered, minutes after he demanded her to say something. âThere was nothing we could do for you. We tried for so long, I was afraid that maybe you could become a danger to the rest of the family⊠That you would become likeâŠâ She was looking at the Villain now, â...him.â
Vigilante threw her to the floor, making a small table fall as a vase with flowers crushed to the floor with her. He pulled his knife, âgo to hell! I donât care if you burn there for the rest of eternity, maybe you understand how my life has been.â He yelled, âyouâre nothing but a coward and maybe the rest of your children will realize that you are willing to abandon a child. They should be old enough to know the meaning of it, there is only so long you can use your lies and manipulations to have them love you.âÂ
Villain bit his lip and knew he was harsh, not sure it was out of spite or maybe⊠Just maybe what had been in his heart all along. Henchman came inside, from where he most likely had waited outside. Grabbing Vigilante's shoulders, âcome on. We should go,â a softer voice Villain had never heard Henchman use before. Guiding Vigilante outside to the car.Â
Villain looked down at her, she glared at him. âI wasnât aware that he was my son until recently,â he said as he removed the earpiece, shutting off the device so Vigilante couldnât hear more. âBut whatever I have done, I wouldnât be able to do something so cold towards a family member. A part of me always regretted cheating on you, but at least I did regret it. However lucky I have been ending up with two sons.â
She sat up making sure not to cut herself on the crushed glass. âAt least I am not wanted or continue toâŠâ
âNo, you donât. But I paid for some of my mistakes in prison,â he said and started walking away. âBut I still consider you abandoning your own son a bigger crime than most of mine. Make sure to never set foot near him again, you have hurt him enough.âÂ
Villain glanced back over his shoulder, she stood up now. âOr else Iâll make sure you canât do anything to him ever again.â
He left her alone in there, walking to the car where Vigilante and Henchman stood. Vigilante still seems to fall apart into millions of pieces. Henchman embraced him, holding him together, or else he might have been on the ground and not standing.
âTime to go home.â Villain said and Hencheman somehow lingered out of the grip Vigilante had of him, setting him in the backseat.Â
âYou better sit back on the way back,â he said after closing the door. âI think the truth hurt him more than you thought it would.â
Villain swallowed, âwe get him through it, Iâm counting on your help. He is not alone anymore.â Henchman nodded, smiling. Opened the door to the driver seat, Villain joining Vigilante in the back. Glancing back to the house where they had been. Looking back one last time.
