GLaDOS voice: "Would you like to see some artwork I generated? I've heard from other test subjects that AI-generated artwork produces an uncanny valley response in human viewers because they can't perceive it as fully real. They've told me that it looks absolutely hideous to them, that they can't imagine anything more disgusting than AI art. But, well I've been practicing and wanted your honest opinion. Feel free to let me know how ugly you find this by ranking it on a scale from 'vomit-inducing' to 'eye-bleeding'." A robotic arm lowers from the ceiling holding a hand mirror up to Chell's face
btw it's so fucking stupid you can be anxious physically in your body even after you've decided mentally you don't care. I'm supposed to be in charge here
A QUEEN
Okay, I don’t normally add on to posts but in this case I’ve got to.
Rachel Ann Bovier is a Pittsburgh legend who has been publishing her poems in city newspapers for decades. In more recent years, she started putting up these bill boards along major roads. For what reason? I have no clue. But I would often pass them on my way to Oakland for therapy. They never failed to cheer me up.
As a young trans writer, they gave me this precious little spark of joy. There was someone like me, a writer, a Pittsburgher, a trans person, who was confident enough to put their face on a bill board! I would always smile as we passed by and my mom took note.
Fast forward a few years and it’s my 21st birthday. My mom has been super excited about my gift and teased me about it over and over again. She said it was the best gift she’d ever gotten me and in many ways she was right. It was a custom poem she commissioned from Miss Bouvier! It congratulated me on my birthday, my academic success, lots of little stuff. It was simple and sweet and perfect.
I’m still not out to my parents about being trans, but that poem serves as a reminder to me that trans people are every where, they are artists, they are all ages, and their visibility is essential. So thank you to Rachel Ann Bouvier for being a great poetess and a Pittsburgh treasure!
Queer joy detected!
This is so wholesome. The billboards don’t try to sell you anything. They don’t preach religion or show a vaguely threatening attorney. They just have nice little sayings on them.

Two indy horror movies are now outperforming a Star Wars flick at the summer box office; truly the Old Gods are dead.
I feel like we're all just starved for novelty
This is a huge part of the reason I'm sort of over a lot of Nerd Culture™ shit. When it first bust into the mainstream it felt great because wow, a lot of the stuff I thought was cool was getting some mainstream appeal.
Then it felt like there was this convergence of nerdy people saying "If we stop watching/supporting this they'll stop making it!" and large corporate entities realizing "If we keep pumping this recognizable shit out the nerds will keep paying for it," and I'm just... so bored. I've never been so bored by science fiction, comic books, and other fantastic stories.
So I stopped. No more Marvel, no more Star Wars, even my beloved Star Trek is on thin ice. Give me something I've never seen before. Give me new stories that start at the start of the movie and end at the end of the movie.
Made a playlist for Pride Month! For those not in the know, ie. probably everyone on tumblr, I came of age right in the middle of the prime CD-burning era, before the advent of streaming. So when I wanted to share music, I would burn a CD.
Nowadays, to constrain myself in a creative way, I create playlists the same way I burned CDs. The goal is to fit it under 70 minutes, and to create something that sounds good starting at the start and listening through to the end. So if you want to listen how I meant for it to be listened to, that's how you do it.
That being said, Pride is at least on some level saying "fuck you" to authority, so, feel free to tell me to fuck myself and put it on shuffle if you want.
Squatters' rights apply to grandmas. If someone's not visiting and looking after their grandma, but you will, after a set amount of time once you've settled in, that's your grandma now.

history fucked me up
oxford was built and operational as a college before the rise of the mayans and cleopatra lived in a time nearer to pizza hut’s invention than to the pyramids being built
I need a noncomprehensive history book that covers Known World History in time periods, like “in this century, all this shit was happening concurrently” and not just all spread out so I have to piece it together like some unpaid uneducated scholar
You mean like this?
The Timetables of History by Bernard Grun
I grew up with this book, which is frickin’ enormous, and it was endlessly fascinating to young me to pour over the side by side comparison of events taking place concurrently under different headings and in different parts of the world.
Or if you want something you can put on your wall, there’s this:
World History Timeline
I had this book! My grandpa gave it to me and it was really freakin useful!!
I loved this book! Same for The Timetables of Science: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Science.
Same for The Timetables of Technology: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Technology. Great references!
okay but here’s an even cooler (free!) visualization that goes a step further and tracks ideas, devices, infrastructures, and systems of power
Calculating Empires: A Genealogy of Technology and Power Since 1500
✨️with a special focus on colonialism, militarization, automation, and enclosure✨️
You can spend hours upon hours exploring this

I do find it interesting when my British friends tell me that everyone thought that America was really cool and glamourous when they were growing up, but I can assure you that this was not how America was perceived by the kids in Canada, at least not where I lived.
I guess it's because the glamour doesn't work when you're too culturally proximate to it? Or it's the equivalent of a girl telling a kid "Oh my God, your older brother is so cool." Like, what? No he's not.
I went there most frequently as a kid/young teen, mostly before 2001 and before I was particularly politically aware, so to me the US always felt like a sort of Mirrorverse. It's like here, except all the stores have different names, they call it Soda, they use gallons, their money is weird, and if you are quiet and unassuming sometimes it takes them awhile to realize you aren't one of them...
