When I had a self-harm relapse at the end of March, I fucked up. I knew I needed stitches but I was terrified they would throw me in the psych ward. But the ER staff were so kind. I was being really hard on myself about it and the doctor stitching me up said, "Yeah, but recovery isn't linear, you know?" They asked what was going on that made me relapse and I explained how destabilizing my workplace turning on me after I reported disability discrimination has been. Half of my life has been dedicated to disability awareness and advocacy. This is so important to me. So it's been intensely hurtful to actually have my rights violated by a place I thought I was safe in and that I could trust, to stand up for myself, sound the alarm multiple times, and then... Nothing. No repair. No accountability. Only deflecting, reframing, gaslighting. Ableism is so deeply ingrained in people that they don't even notice it, like fish not seeing the water they live in. Most people have zero idea that this is even a thing, it literally never crosses their minds, which is why I do the work I do. But we have rights for a reason. Disabled generations before me fought for me to have these rights, so I will keep standing up. Anyway, what stood out to me is that when I've gone to the ER for fibromyalgia or ME/CFS flare-ups, at intake they immediately start asking me the "are you having thoughts of hurting yourself or others?" questions. But I was in for a literal self-harm relapse bad enough to need stitches and they didn't ask me any of those questions. Didn't even bring in a psych to talk to me at all. Isn't that so weird? Why do I get the mental health questions for fibro/ME but not for actual self-harm? They seem more interested in questioning my mental state when I present with an invisible disability flare than when I present with a visible self-inflicted injury.

Part of socializing and having friends is being a good listener even when you don't actually give a shit about the subject.
