in the US we love to create places (in black neighborhoods, in latina neighborhoods, etc) where crime "happens." really crime is something created by the state and placed on the people living in these places. this produces a "group-differentiated vulnerability to premature death" (Ruthie Gilmore). black and brown lives are devalued, shortened, and nullified. the US is a racist state and it's a settler state. if you devalue a people and a place and if you exert tight control over it, remove people (incarcerate or kill), devalue their labor and prevent them from having any connection to the land you make it easier for white people to accumulate wealth capital and real estate. white supremacy is materially supported by crime being something we believe is real. crime is something the state creates to further white supremacy, not something a racialized other commits in a dangerous desperate place
