"man is gender neutral"
star trek changed their intro speech in the 80s to be more inclusive, changing "where no man has gone before" to "where no one has gone before"
just looked it up to be sure; the word "man" hasn't been a gender-neutral term for about 700 years
the last time "man" was gender-neutral was because we said "werman and woman" with "man" being synonymous with "hand/person." If you ask someone who says "man is gender-neutral" to make a list of genders, I guarantee you they are never going to say "werman and woman" they are going to say "man and woman"
For context, "girl" was used gender-neutrally for centuries longer than man, with records from 1475, the year Isabella and Ferdinand began jointly ruling Spain, who would later finance Columbus.
But when you use feminine language "neutrally" you get a very different reaction than the use of masculine language like man/guys/bro/dude/et al. I wonder why that is
