University of California(Davis) has been reported to pay $175000 for this image to not appear when you search it on google
On November 18th, 2011, a peaceful protest was held in UC Davis. A branch of āOccupy Wallstreetā, Occupy UC Davis was intended to protest police violence on UC campuses. The police responded by hearing their concerns, agreeing and then pepper-sprayed the protesters. Thatās right, they attacked students that were protesting the fact that they attack people. source
If youāre thinking āOh man, someone got some compensation for this, right!?ā Yup. Someone did. The cop.Ā
The stress of being the poor victim netted him a $38,000 in workerās comp.Ā
Thatās more than a lot of people make in a full year. source
UC Davis āInvestigatedā this. And the guy who conducted the investigation was a Police Chief William J. Bratton - Chairman of the private business that provides UC Davisās security. SOMEHOW there wasnāt enough evidence to charge the officers involved in this incident. source
It just came out that UC Davis has paid $175,000+ to a private āImage Management firmā, who is putting all of that sweet, sweet dollar into manipulating Googleās search engines, as well as other networks, to make it a lot LOT harder to find reminders that this happened. Read that what-proper:Ā
Theyāre spending almost $200,000 of school funds to escape being remembered for this awful incident.
source
So letās take a stand. Letās fight back against their attempts to censor the truth and avoid accountability for their awful, awful actions and violent corruption. I have before you a perfectly shareable image set, complete with sources and screenshots of proof. Letās all work together and get the word out about this chicanery. #Love it!
you mean they pay good money to make these pictures disappear and they still can be found hereĀ ?
This should never be forgotten!
@affectedeffect
who else is angry that lyrically and musically the black parade is a fucking masterpiece but itās always going to be written off asĀ āshitty emo musicā because teenage girls liked itĀ
Black parade is the bohemian rhapsody of our generation and no one can take that away from me or us.
tldr? if trained military ppl who are most comfortable around guns are still getting gunned down by those with the intent to kill HOW THE FUCK DO YOU THINK A SCIENCE TEACHER IS GOING TO REACT? you actually think they are going to turn into bruce willis and black widow or just another dead person? the fuck is wrong with you?

Tumblr is recommending anti-porn blogs to me.
No thanks. You see, I believe in women's agency to express themselves sexually. I also believe in women's agency to use their sexuality for profit.
I'm also not an idiot who thinks that seeing people have sex will somehow turn men into violent rapists.
So please, Tumblr, stop asking me to follow these repressed, repressive, and infantalizing morons.
Look book
sheās a trump supporter :/
You gotta check the facts before you spread misinformation. Many people read headlines from satire news websites and just go with it.Ā
Fran is a survivor of sexual assault and a huge supporter of LGBTQIA+ rights. Do you REALLY think sheād support that racist rapist?!
She specifically became involved in LGBTQ+ advocacy when her then ex husband came out to her some years after their divorce, and she even made a show with him 2011 trying to help him find love. Fran Drescher is an angel!
Fran is honestly such a good and kind person and sheās a fighterā¦ā¦donāt defame her!

Shout out to Samantha Wright for making me realize how much I love muscular women
i find it ironic that there are so many musicals about the poor and destitute, yet usually the only people who can afford to watch them are those who could never understand the sentiment
There is a PHD thesis in this comment
So Iām not sure, but I think this probably is tied into the concept of bourgeois/finished theater that was discussed by Augusto Boal. The main idea is that the dominant class decide what is āartā and how it will be available. So for plays, even those about the lower classes or revolutionaries, they become successful more through appealing to the upper and middle classes than the lower class or revolutionaries. And I would argue plays, or at least Broadway plays, are much more accessible to the middle and upper class than to lower classes, more so than with music or film. So any really successful play, whether it is about revolution or poverty or not, will keep in mind the expectations and values of the middle and upper class- particularly the upper class.
Lindsay Ellis actually has a very good video about AIDs, Rent, and bourgeois theater in this video. She argues that this idea is why Rent, especially the movie, focuses more on the artsy filmmaker Mark, who chooses to be poor, rather than Angel or Tom, or any of the homeless that Maureen is supposedly speaking for. To clarify, while she does touch on how this affects plays like Les Mis or Hamilton, she doesnāt think theyāre bad. They are not saying they are in opposition to the culture theyāre selling themselves to. She does dislike Rent though, because that is exactly what itās saying.
I know people like to screech that teenage girls making ānot like the other girlsā comics is proof that makeup fans are literally the most oppressed and woke people ever, but is it really surprising that many of those kinds of comics are made by teenage girls?
I mean, for one, teenagers often express themselves in a fairly dickish, ignorant way, because, duh, theyāre teenagers, theyāre still learning how to handle expressing themselves, and they often screw up and do something cringey, or blame the wrong people (like thinking that not liking femininity makes you better than other women). We all did it as teens, and ideally we learned how to handle things better and with more empathy as we got older and more experienced.
The other reason it isnāt surprising is that for many girls, especially tomboys/gnc girls, puberty and your teen years are when many of the adults around you drop their grudging tolerance of your āunladylikeā personality and appearance, and really start slamming you with pressure to Grow Up And Be A Lady⢠by wearing makeup, heels, more feminine clothing, dropping your old activities and hobbies for more acceptable feminine hobbies, behaving in a more āladylikeā way, being pretty and charming for the boys so you donāt die alone, etc. Itās totally justified to feel angry at the fact that your personality is getting trampled, and itās not surprising that many girls would start to resent everything related to this kind of pressure, and associate it with just groveling and faking to appease someone else.
The appropriate response isnāt to shriek at these girls that theyāre oppressing Sephora or some shit, and that theyāre ugly internalized misogynist bitches who need to learn how to get their eyebrows and conture on fleek, and how theyāll love makeup once they grow up and stop being evil bitchy haters; the better response is to let them know that their feelings are justified, but that thereās better ways to deal with that frustration than blaming and taking it out on other women.

Update: she's still here. No sign of the neighbors
So my neighbors just put their dog in my yard and left. I'm really not sure what to do here
With the controversy about a gaming journo making Cuphead video showing him less intelligent than a pigeon, itās reasonable to wonder why other gaming journos write defending him think-pieces, circling their wagons around something so absurd.
For the sake of discussion, letās assume they arenāt throwing a brainlessly childish fit over anything that remotely can make them look even slightly bad. A pretty big assumption, I know, but letās go with it.
Iāll play the devil advocate and say that being a reviewer of video games is harder than being a reviewer of books, music or movies. With the others, you need to only know how to write, and to know the theory behind the rules of your medium of choice. With video games, you also need an ability to actively play the game, in order of properly evaluating its game mechanics. You donāt need this much of active effort to finish a book, a movie, or a song, but you need it for a video game.
That being said, video games reviewers are rather on the bottom of the totem pole of pop culture reviewers, having only comic books reviewers beneath them. And even this is debatable. In short, the most requiring medium to criticize is the most unrewarding for the critic himself. Which is why so many gaming journalists are rejects from other pop culture journalists, and write about the supposed inferiority of video games in comparison to other mediums.Ā
In order to gain a real-life notability (outside of gaming circles) as a video game critic, you have to hate video games, and with your rhetoric pander to the politics of your target audience. If you target religious right-wingers, you say games are satanistic. If you target family values right-wingers, you say the games are too sexy and violent. If you target leftists, you say video games are not diverse, are sexist and promote meritocracy.
In other words, the most recognizable to the public video game critics donāt write a shit about game mechanics, thus have no need for a proper set of skills to evaluate them. The general public doesnāt give a shit about game mechanics and the games criticās ability to judge them.
But, paradoxically, those who care, the gamers, are the most guaranteed to read whatever the video games critic will write. And if the video games critic does not provide clicks for their big corporation sponsored outlet, they will become a reject from pop culture reviewers rejects, and then replaced with another reject.
Which is why there is a push towards non-requiring so much skill games, like walking simulators, and general contempt towards skill-based games, like FPSes. Which is why they give importance to games being āstatus quo changersā and often forgive or outright omit everything that makes such games objectively a flawed product (example: Sunset ignoring you going against the task of staying in the apartment and continuing as if youāve stayed in it, even if you had left). Which is why there is such push towards politics being the most important aspect of a game. Because such gaming journalists donāt want their audience to care about things that require unrewarding effort to properly criticize. Gamers arenāt their audience, and they want to change their audience. And the medium they write about, but have to write about. Because they are, and always will be, rejects from the other mediums.
This is where the defense ends. Not being able to tell in a platformer to that if you canāt jump high enough, you need to use another platform to elevate your position, isnāt a matter of skill. It is a matter of very basic competence in the video game genre you write about. Perhaps Dean Takahashi is a point&click adventure guy, which I wouldnāt hold against him. But I sincerely doubt this from his display of a beneath-pigeon problem solving ability. And the pigeon didnāt have instructions written all over the place.
This controversy has nothing to do with skill, unless you count as a āskill requiring actionā succeeding at the test of not being mentally challenged. And while I donāt demand from game reviewers to speed-run games, while I understand they might not be paid enough to complete the hardest games by the deadline, the disfunctionality displayed in this video is simply incomprehensible. This isnāt a footage of a highly difficult game, it is a tutorial demonstrating the most basic problem in the genre. It is objectively false to call it otherwise.
But the gaming media call it otherwise, and Iāve already covered their motives. They hate we have towards them an expectation of unrewarding competence, even if it is about competence in not looking like an idiot. This is the level of bullshit they want us to accept, in order to ensure their paychecks. And even if they arenāt paid much for their job, this nonsense does not deserve any sort of payment.
I reject such video games journalism, which we could as well replace with publishing submitted press release PHP scripts. It does no service to the medium, and only drags is down with its ineptitude.

im really looking forward to the new vampire chronicles making anne rice popular again, because then i will get to watch her try to pull the same fucked up authoritarian bullshit sheās always pulled with her fandom, only this time she is going to get torn to pieces by a generation of teenage fans used to holding their content creators accountable for every single sin ever invented,Ā and i will be there with popcorn and a big grin

THIS COMPILATION IS ART
Okay, if Iām understanding this right, the Starship Troopers novels were a satire of fascist societies, showing that humanity was no better than the bugs.
But when it came time to do the movies, the director didnāt pick up on the satire, and so did his own satire of the novels, not knowing that they were also a satire. The result is a satire matryoshka.
Right?
Not entirely. Itās not that the director didnāt pick up on the satire and more that he was worried that the movie audiences wouldnāt, and so wanted to make it more clear.
No no no, the film is the only one satirizing fascist societies, whereas the novel was played straight with its militarism and anti-communist rhetoric (it was written in 1959 literally right after the Mccarthy trials) and when the director started reading it, was surprised at how preachy of its militaristic idea of liberties and citizenship, the director decided to parody these ideas by portraying these ideas to the extreme. The director was VERY aware of what the book was trying to convey, and decided to take the piss out of it.
The book was not meant to be taken as an ode to fascism. Heinlein was not a fascist. He hated fascism. Look at his life. He supported the military, but did not believe that the government or military should be able to interfere with people's personal lives. Kind of the opposite of fascism. Or you could look at his other works, such as Stranger in A Strange Land or, my personal favorite, Citizen of the Galaxy. They are very clearly anti-fascist. Could not be more clearly against the idea. Read Starship Troopers more carefully. See all the commentary about good men being sent off to die because their government has decided that they have to rule everything, even if it means sacrificing everything. See the commentary about control, inequality, disenfranchisement, stupid rules that mean your death of not followed, and how some are content to sit back and let it happen.
If you think that Starship Troopers was meant to be played straight, then you missed the whole point.
