One of the things I really like about the relationship between Harry and Snape is precisely that Harry is such an asshole, because that’s when he shows that he’s a teenager rebelling against the only real authority figure he has in his life. The rest of the adults (if we leave the Dursleys aside, since they’re a case apart) are very condescending and permissive with him; even McGonagall, who does set more limits, always ends up bending. But Severus doesn’t.

Severus can’t stand the kid getting into trouble every other day, because he is the one who has to get him out of it or make sure he doesn’t get himself killed in one of those messes. So for me it’s not just that he has it in for him because he’s the spitting image of James, but also because Harry gives him ten times more work, which for someone who already has one job and another on top of that as a spy is absolutely exhausting.

Severus imposes a very strict authority on him, and Harry can’t stand it because he’s also not used to other adults in the magical world setting such hard limits on him, so he rebels in a very childish way. Because those little things he does, like “don’t call me sir,” are the tantrums of a fucking shitty kid, but that’s the point, he is a shitty kid. I mean, Harry is a teenager, and teenagers give those kinds of answers when they want to feel above an adult who’s imposing rules on them. And it’s very real because of that.

Abd people still claim them tormenting Snape was somehow a mutual rivalry? Nah. Just nah.
