This is book #2 in The Underdogs series but it is my favorite one!

Troy lied.

Troy and Clarissa meet at a bar and Troy pretends to be a teacher like Clarissa. A few months later, Clarissa finds out she’s pregant and she later finds out that Troy is actually a student not a teacher. Clarissa is devastated and upset and tells Troy she never wants to see him again.

Years pass by and Troy still hasn’t met his son but he’s always been around in the sidelines watching and helping when Clarissa lets him. He’s now a college senior and hopefully NFL bound. Troy has matured and is juggling both school and work so that he can be there for Clarissa and their son Dante. He moves in to the room for rent at the house next door so that he can be close to his family.

What I love about this book is that the author developed her characters well and the readers see Troy’s redemption and his love for his family. He never gave up even though Clarissa didn’t make it easy on him (which I understand why she did). I love that the author really included the father and son relationship in the book unlike other books that just mention the child and leaves that child in the background and only focus on the couple.

Rock Bottom Girl by Lucy Score

I recently stumbled upon author Lucy Score’s books and I’m glad I did! Many of her books are in a small town setting and they are hilarious. Small town gossip is faster than speed of light!

Marley is our heroine in Rock Bottom Girl and she has literally hit rock bottom. Marley is 38 years old and she is now back in her hometown where they are still talking about that Homecoming her senior year. She is broke and was just recently dumped. It’s been twenty years since she left town and the cool kids are still cool. Her mom gets her a job as a temporary gym teacher and soccer coach at her old high school where former high school bad boy Jake Weston also happens to be the track coach and teacher of the year. Suddenly she finds herself stuck in a deal with Jake himself: He’ll teach her how to coach if she teaches him how to be in a relationship. It’s all supposed to be temporary but is it really?

I love Marley’s character. Lucy made her character so relatable and even though she remembers her high school days as a nightmare, everyone else views her as a hero. She’s just always herself and doesn’t really care about what others think. I love seeing the small town through Marley’s eyes because she’s someone who couldn’t wait to get out of there that she didn’t get to enjoy the little things.

Synopsis:

Vanessa Mazur was the personal assistant/housekeeper/fairy godmother to Aiden Graves, the top defensive end in the National Football Organization for the past two years and she’s finally had enough (and has also saved up enough money). Vanessa decides to quit her job and follow her real passion. What she didn’t expect was to find Aiden Graves at her doorstep a few weeks after she quit. Keep in mind that this is the Aiden Graves who never stood up for her and who couldn’t even take the time out of the day to greet her good morning... this Aiden Graves is at her doorstep asking for a favor. 

I’ve never been a huge fan of slow-burn romance novels before, but now I just realized that it’s because those authors didn’t get it right! This novel is definitely a slowwww-burn romance and it was fantastic! The characters were well developed and it’s not another one of those love at first sight story. 

I think I’ve read this book over ten times since I discovered it and I end up seeing scenes in a different light when I read the book again and again. Mariana first introduces us to a handsome yet aloof, clueless, selfish, and arrogant Aiden Graves but she slowly takes us (including Vanessa) onto an adventure where we see the changes Aiden goes through. Vanessa and Aiden might seem like the complete opposites but they actually have many things in common. Both characters come from a rough childhood and they don’t have much (if any) experience with love. Vanessa is a strong heroine which I totally love. It’s nice to see a strong heroine plus one who is relatable! 

As you read the book, you’ll see and swoon over the little things that Aiden does over time.

“We watch,” the Primary said. “We protect.”

But things were altering in front of them, a faint glow emanating from where the aeclari had been before the filaments obscured both Raphael’s body and Elena’s chrysalis.

Beyond the balcony doors now partially covered with the snow silk of the filaments, the Bluebell turned. His eyes widened at seeing the ocean of filaments, the glow. But before he could open the closed doors, a familiar voice entered all their minds.

Leave now. It was an order from an archangel. Clear the skies above. Empty the land around. GO.

The Legion were moving even as the last word echoed in their minds. They were Raphael’s Legion, Elena’s Legion, and they had been given an order. The Bluebell wasn’t Legion. He was one of the Seven. Unique. With his own mind.

Torment wrenched his features, but he inclined his head, and the Primary saw him form the word, “Sire.”

All of them moved.

The Bluebell dropped to the grass, then ran inside the house.

The Legion broke into four parts and swept the area. Winged beings were already flying toward the river at high speed, their faces stark and their jaws determined. The Legion dropped down in front of cars moving on the nearest road. The cars were not so close to the aeclari’s home, but the archangel hadn’t said how far to clear.

When the first two cars halted with a screech that caused a burning scent to rise to their nostrils, the Legion wrenched the doors open and hauled the startled vampires out. A group of the Legion rose into the air, two to a vampire. Another group found four humans in a third car, a vampire’s cattle heading home. The scared cattle whimpered at being taken by the Legion but didn’t struggle. Neither did the vampires after they saw the angels racing from the Enclave to the water.

Golden light poured out from the windows of the aeclari’s home.

Many of the angels streaming over the water held vampires or humans in their arms, getting their households out of danger. The Bluebell was one of the last to fly out of the Enclave, and though the Legion did not speak to many outside of the aeclari, they spoke to him: Are the aeclari’s people safe? This was important. The Legion knew. The aeclari had bonds to those who lived in the house.

Yes, I got them out. The Bluebell, who could fly faster than the Primary and sometimes raced with the cars of the Blade and the Viper, fell off the cliff with his wings licked by a golden light so bright that it was difficult to face. In one hand, he held a large rectangular thing, in his other items they recognized.

Several of the Legion flew to him, and took the things. They did not understand things, but these were linked to the aeclari in their mind. We will fly them to the Tower.

Most of the angels kept on flying toward Manhattan, and those of the Legion that carried vampires or mortals kept on going, too. But the Primary turned once he was over the center of the river, as did those of his brethren who flew only their own bodies.

The Bluebell halted in front of them, the silvery blue of his wings spread and his face awash in the burning golden light that had turned the river to gold.

And the light, it grew, and grew, and grew.

Until at last, the light was so bright that it became fire and even the Primary couldn’t bear it and threw up his arm in front of his eyes. The last thing he saw was an intense white brightness.
