read in 2019: the gravity of us by brittainy c. cherry
“Being around you does something strange to me, something that hasn’t happened in such a long time.” “What happens?” He took my hand in his then led it to his chest, and his next words came out as a whisper. “My heart begins to beat again.”
Water
De Sardet found the tears never stopped when he was alone. In front of the others, he was brave faced. But in privacy, they came. Like a watery memorial for his cousin that he visited over and over.
There was no sound, no sobs, no crying. Just tears. That he wiped clean and used a cool cloth to lessen the redness of her eyes. But he could never remove the scent of salt water.
Vasco could smell it on him, see it’s traces in the corners of his eyes or in the hastily wiped trail on his cheek. He served him water each time, insisting he drink when he noticed. He was silent but he knew De Sardet would need to replenish that which he shed. And though he said nothing, he was there the next time he sought a private moment. His arms open, willing, and welcoming for De Sardet to mourn the loss.
The next time the tears came, they went into the sea. Salt with salt. And Vasco was there again, brushing his hair back and kissing each tear as De Sardet joined him in matrimony. His Tempest, forever.
