Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.

focus on yourself and what makes you happy, not what other people may think of you. the truth is that youâll always be the bad guy in someoneâs story, less because youâre actually a bad person but more because you literally cannot please everyone. so as long as you know youâre not deliberately hurting others, itâs more than enough to be a good person for yourself, not for other people.

As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.
Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.
"Canceling" was also an AAVE term that originally meant "We ain't fucking with this person anymore because they're weird with weird and questionable beliefs" and white people took it and tainted it to mean "You're trying to ruin someone's life, how dare you make someone take accountability for their actions !" like they really thought that saying "Hey this person is racist, maybe you want to think twice before giving them money and support" is a bad thing and that says a lot more about them than it does about us
The gap in cause-and-effect here is that how the term was used in practice morphed from a limited interpersonal âI donât fw youâ to a public âeverybody is expected to ensure no one else fw you or anyone who doesâ, a lot of peopleâs idea of âaccountabilityâ is just vengeance, intimidation, & humiliation (often in the form of eternal public flagellation of wrong-doers), and what does or doesnât constitute a cancellable offense often lacks any sense of proportionality.
For every âYou Love Is Cancelledâ or âdonât give your money to JK Rowling because sheâs going to use it to lobby for anti-trans legislationâ there are a thousand petty Google docs & callout posts that turn anything from private disputes to public posts that simply display unintentional latent bias & ignorant insensitivity into a massive public spectacle.
The fact is âcancelâ gained traction as a term of choice for people who engage in mass-shaming & shunning, leading to dog-piling, brigading, mass-harassment, and doxxing. This kind of behavior has very obviously given targets PTSD, opened people up to violent stalking, and led to multiple fairly high-profile suicides.
Bad actors will use all of the above in bad faith as cover for genuinely heinous behavior, but that doesnât make it not an issue, and itâs no surprise that people who are genuinely worried about the acceptability of this behavior (and for good reason) would use âcancelâ in that sense; itâs what the people engaging in that behavior are calling it.
