I know we got other moments of reciprocity with MakoHaru but I’m only using the above examples in this one. I find interesting that in the above case , you could say that although Makoto enjoys spending time with Haruka, his reactions were more about swimming with Haruka in general (entering the relay with him, being jealous of Rin who gets to swim on the same level as Haruka).

Yet with Haruka it’s different. When Haruka talks about not being okay if Makoto’s not there, it’s about Makoto’s presence in his life. Him being jealous of Kisumi is because of the latter is spending more time with Makoto, playing basketball with him (novel). In Haruka’s case, it’s all about Makoto himself: Makoto going away from him or someone else “taking him away” if I can put it like this.

These two instances, as simple as they are, are enough to convey how much Makoto and Haruka affect each other and how “possessive” they can get get because of the other, even if the word possessive is kind of strong. But these moments are especially important when I look at Haruka, who unlike Makoto isn’t thinking in terms of swimming with Makoto and reacting to it the way Makoto does. For Haruka, it’s about how he feels without Makoto, period.

The hand supporting him, the one who give him strengh to face forward, the one with whom everything is okay, the one who “would always stand by him” etc… Makoto is all of that and more for Haruka. It’s no wonder Haruka was deeply affected by his fight with Makoto and in the end went to Tokyo with Makoto.

There’s always more emphasis on how Makoto feels around Haruka and not enough the other way around. Utsumi said that for her Makoto is Haruka’s other half, Makoto completes Haruka. It’s not about swimming but about Haruka’s life, Haruka’s character. Look the way Haruka reacts to Makoto related matters, how it’s been conveyed to us through novels, anime or magazine spread.

On the side of the Free! series’ music composer, Kato Tatsuya, we explained in detail the impression of the scene, and he placed extra attention to compose the music based on it, it was really touching.
