Starting w makoharu bc it’s interesting it’s only horizontal one. Haru’s in the dark, but they’re intimately close, holding hands, complete eye contact and trust. Haru looks surprised, which indicates his own enchantment with Makoto’s brightness, being the sun in Haru’s orbit. Makoto's also the one coming into Haru, looks like he's the one swimming toward him. While Haru lets himself be taken in to him.

Rinharu in the other hand is very reminiscent of the little mermaid. Haru quite literally ‘saves’ Rin when Rin lost his swimming motivations. Haru still looks at him like something that’s admirable, almost faraway… but something to long for… Ahh and Rin looks like he's crying ;;; Eyes closed, lost, might not even be aware of Haru's presence. Notice Rin here is the only one without his swim goggles as well.

Rin and Rei are complete opposites and visibly mad, but also reminds me of yin and yang the way they balance each others colors. Rei’s glasses even act as that bit of “red” on the opposite side! Being back to back I think references their underlying support of each other

Reigisa on the other hand are completely facing each other, pure eye contact. In each other’s arms in full mutual and equal support. Do I even have to point out the admiration and love in their eyes!! they also kinda look like a heart... In my free! color theory post, I associate red with competition and logic, this include Rei's glasses. But for Rei to not have his glasses on completely looking at Nagisa with pure beauty.... ahhh

Makoto and Nagisa are completely back to back!! Makogisa I think are severely underrated in a sense that Nagisa notices Makoto’s moods and perspectives esp when Makoto feels off. But they’re both watching out for each other quite literally “I got your back”

This one haunts me because MakoRin are facing each other, but it’s almost like the other person isn’t even there. YET their foreheads are still touching so it’s like they still think of each other even if they don’t “see” each other. i.e Rin worried about Makoto and the ocean. Makoto never makes faces like these in official arts, he always has a smiling or kind face. But here, he looks lost, possibly even moreso than Rin.
