Self respect doesn't just affect the self, it affects the way you see everyone around you, what you think they deserve, the advice you give them, the beliefs you reinforce in them. If you don't respect yourself you will innately respect everyone around you less, because you won't be able to see the horrible things that happen to them clearly, since the same happens to you and you think you deserve it.
