The faint glow of the television lights the room on what is, quite possibly, one of the most important days of your life. Government officials presenting speeches that fall on deaf ears; the nervousness bubbles inside of you. A new directive, finding your kindred spirit using technology, who would have thought we would end up here. You stare at the ring you were issued, twisting it on your finger. The act in itself making your true feelings known to your partner sitting beside you. You were filled with questions. Did people really need to find their soul-mate, doesn’t that take the spice out of life? And more importantly, what happens if he is not yours?
“_______” You hear his voice, quiet and thoughtful. You look over at Taehyung as he takes your hand in his own. He pushes his messy hair out of his eyes with slender fingers as he looks away from you. “It’s going to be okay, you know? We’re meant for each other. It’s obvious” A boxy grin adorns his face as he winks at you. You make a concentrated effort to smile back at him while the inside your stomach churns uncomfortably. Your attention focuses to the television as the countdown begins. This is it, the moment that decides if the comfortable cloud of existence you have grown so used to is allowed to continue. You feel Taehyung’s hand close around your own reassuringly and you squeeze it to let him know you appreciate the gesture, then you hear it. “3…2…..1… Lovers and leavers. Get out into the world and find your perfect match!”
You remove your hand from Taehyung’s and glance at the ring on your finger, then up at your lovers face. His wide eyes staring at the ring silently willing it to move, and his arm with it. The words spoken moments before echoed in your head. Why would they say leavers?
“Maybe we have to be further apart?” you suggest, gesturing to the tangle of limbs that make up your bodies. “Like, maybe it only works when we aren’t physically touching. It wouldn’t make sense to have our hands connected 24/7” Taehyung practically leaps from the couch to test your theory causing you to fall awkwardly to the ground. You hold your shoulder to alleviate the pain from landing on it as you raise your body off the ground up and move away from him, all the while watching your hand. Nothing. 1 step back. Nothing. 2 steps back, 3 steps back. Your hand is still as a stone. God, you would give anything to be made of stone at this very moment, to be able to avoid this situation entirely. You look up at Tae with a pained expression and watch as panic floods his features.
He speaks at a whisper, “What do we do?” He looks at you, watching as your eyes are basically glued to your finger. He raises his voice and speaks again. “_______, What do we do?” You pause, searching your mind for an answer, a solution to this predicament.
“I don’t know, Tae”. Your thoughts drift again, back to those same 13 words. Leavers. They knew this would happen. Your eyes begin to sting as tears formed threatening to fall, your jaw clenched tightly and rapidly your feel your entire body began to heat as though engulfed in flames. Taehyung noticed the change in your posture immediately and rushed to your side. He always was so perceptive when it came to you, that thought only pained you more.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay” Taehyung cupped your jaw and you felt the tension immediately ease at his touch. His hand moved carefully to your chin as he raised your face up to his with a singular curled finger. “We’ll figure this out. I’m not giving up on you.” He rests his head against your own, before angling it slightly to take your lips in his. It’s not until you feel the dampness on your cheek that you realised he was crying.
That night was a restless one, time spent recounting the moment you learned that soul-mates were not just a concept, but an actual, tangible thing. Something that could be identified using whatever this thing on your finger was; computers and magnets if you had to hazard a guess. You were resting on the couch, focused entirely on gods knows what displayed on your phone as you heard an alert on the television. "Breaking news, annual demographic report sees startling increase in incidents of domestic violence" Your breath hitched as your pulse began to quicken, Taehyung was immediately by your side. He grasps the remote and with a push of a button, the screen goes dark. After the death of your mother at the hands of your father you have a visceral reaction to any mention of domestic violence. Your hands clasp the back of your neck as your curl into yourself. Closing your eyes in an attempt to focus on your breathing, and the light patterns being traced on your shoulder blades by the man you love more than anything in this world. After what seems like hours, even though it had been mere minutes you feel your body relax; awash with a sense of calm. Naught but a moment later, the vibrations in your lap distract you from the calm aura as the notifications begin flooding in. Taehyung’s phone pinging loudly from the kitchen. You felt Taehyung’s body relax next to you as he noticed your calm, albeit confused demeanor. He really knew how to do all the right things to help you out of one of your spirals, the only time he ever failed was when he was in one of his own.
“Jesus Christ, who died!?” you exclaimed, swiping the lock screen on your phone to find out what was so pressing that your friends had to blow up your group chat. Confident that you were feeling more yourself Taehyung chuckled as he stood up to check his own. And that was the first time you heard of the soul-mate rings. You weren’t concerned at the time because you were so very positive that he was yours, but as the time drew closer, your doubts grew louder.
Taehyung’s hand brushes your cheek bringing you back to reality, “Go to sleep darling” his voice husky from lack of use. If only it were that easy.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll get there. You just rest.” His hand leaves your cheek and settles on the small of your back. You feel his arm tense, pulling you closer as his lips brush your hair. You raised your hand in the dark slowly, you pause listening for the soft sounds of Taehyung sleeping peacefully. You couldn’t understand how technology can choose your perfect person, could the ring be wrong? You lower your arm, nestling it around your lovers body and after what seems like lifetime of wandering thoughts you finally drift to sleep.
There was a chill in the air as you travel to your favourite cafe after sending a hurried text to Namjoon asking him to meet your there. Being able to spend time away from Taehyung was like a breath of fresh air for you. The only thing tainting it was your guilt for feeling relieved to get time without him fixed to your side. The past few weeks were rough, Taehyung was trying his best to put your mind at ease. He was so concerned about losing you that he was clinging to you like a sloth to a tree. He wasn’t taking into account the fact that you wanted space, or time to think about what you wanted to do. Admittedly, you hadn’t really been clear about wanting time and space, for fear of hurting him, but it was obvious from your demeanor that you were not as comfortable in the relationship as you were before this whole event occurred.
You ponder whether that could be the entire reason that he has reacted this way, but honestly he has always been kind of clingy, it just never used to bother you this much. As the wind picks up you raise your scarf above your nose, increasing your pace to get to the warmth of the building as quick as possible.
When you finally arrive you see Namjoon sitting in your usual booth, you would wonder how he had made it there before you if it weren’t for the fact that he lives only 5 minutes away. He glances up from his phone and smiles as he gets up from his seat to give you a hug.
“Long time no see stranger!” he holds your shoulders tightly as he beams at you, ecstatic to finally see his best friend after what feels like months, when in reality it has only been 3 weeks. He gestures to the seat in front of him as he slides into the booth.
“It would have been sooner if someone would let me go anywhere without him.” You roll your eyes as, the frustration evident as you slump down onto the chair opposite him “He is actually being insufferable”
“How so?” your friend asked, as he reads through the menu. Grabbing your own and reading through your choices you sigh, “He just needs to be with me at all times, like he thinks that if I leave I won’t come back? It’s becoming ridiculous. I’m sure he would follow me to the toilet if I would let him. In fact, he literally waits by the bathroom door when we are out!” you voice raises as you forget that you are in public. Looking around the room you find that people are watching you, embarrassed you sink further into your seat and pull your hood over your head. “I just feel suffocated” you murmur.
“I mean, you two have always been inseparable, where one goes the other follows. Why does it bother you now when it never did before?” Concern laced Namjoon’s features as you recounted the night where you learned that Taehyung wasn’t your soul-mate. How devastated and shocked you both were, how Tae kept telling you that it was all going to be okay, that you would always be together. You told him about how Taehyung had begun to panic every time you attempted to leave the house without him. Rushing to get his jacket and telling you he was planning on going out too, and that you should go together. You mentioned the fact that Taehyung had begun to have nightmares nearly every night. Finally, you explain to your best friend that you wanted space to figure out how you felt about the whole situation, if you wanted to continue your relationship with Taehyung or whether that would just make everything hurt than much more if he ended up finding his soul-mate or you, yours.
He listened intently and paused, thinking on everything you had just spewed to him “I’m going to be really honest with you, based solely on what you have told me it feels like you might be distancing yourself from him. You have always let your thoughts rule your actions _______, you are basically an open book. He is probably just reacting to the way you are acting towards him. He obviously has no doubts about this relationship and wants to continue being with you, so seeing you physically distancing yourself from the relationship is likely really scaring him. I feel for the guy, because that sounds really rough.” He lowers the menu and gestures to the waitress that he is ready to order as you stare directly at the table, your heart feels like someone has taken it with both hands and is trying to rip it out of your chest. You never thought of yourself as the kind of person to hurt someone you love.
“I snuck out to meet you today, Tae is asleep at home… I didn’t even leave a note Joon! What kind of person am I?” your vision blurs as the realisation hits you. You turn your head to the window as the waitress approaches the table, you always get embarrassed when outsiders get to see your emotions. Namjoon orders a latte for himself as well as your usual, an iced coffee, and mentions that you will need a little more time to decide on food to give you some time to calm down.
Once the waitress leaves he responds quietly “You’re not a bad person _______. Sometimes your brain is just so active that you don’t think before you do things.” You feel a vibration in your pocket, removing your phone you see Taehyung’s name plastered on the screen. You slide the red circle to the left of the screen and exhale.
“He’s awake, I might need to grab this one to go.” Your sad eyes firmly fixed to your phone as Namjoon sighs and takes your hand.
“I understand, but take this advice. You need to talk to him, explain how you are feeling. And while you are at it, consider this. You and Tae have always worked so well together. You’ve maybe had an argument once a year, if that is not a soul-mate. I don’t know what is.” He squeezes your hand in an attempt to reassure you, but you can only focus on the ring adorning his.
“But the rings didn’t do anything.” You take back your hand to point at the ring on your finger. “It was exactly the same as right now with you. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.”
“Have you ever considered that they are just man made technology, and technology can fail. They could be defective, or one of them might have been broken in the mail. You know delivery companies are super careful with other peoples packages.” You hear an edge of sarcasm on the last line. You actually hadn’t considered the possibility. You smile so widely you think your cheeks might burst. “Joon you are literally the best!” The waitress returns with your drinks, you take yours and thank her. “I’ve got to get home and talk to Tae. Thanks so much!” You hug your best friend and take off running, almost bumping into someone walking in. You feel a slight tug of your finger and you look at your hand in disbelief, but every thing seems normal. You look back at the figure that was walking up to the counter, and you take note of his coat, you must have caught yourself on it in your rush. As you turn to walk home with renewed purpose, you neglect to notice that he looks back at you too.
Authors Note: Oh my god, it is here. Forgive me for being a big ball of anxiety over this. I'm super open to constructive criticism, it has been over 4 years since I wrote something and this is the first time I have written anything with the intention of publishing it. I hope you all enjoy it!
I honestly forgot that authors notes are a thing until like 5 minutes before this was due to be posted so forgive the drivel.
I have a taglist for this fic, so if you would like to be added please let me know!
Thank you for reading! I appreciate you so much!
EDIT: This is a report as I made about 500 mistakes when posting this. The main one being that I forgot the title. I'm a hot mess, you'll get used to it! (though I generally do learn from my mistakes)
