Is there a word for a specific brand of Christians who use toxic positivity? I’m tired of being told I lack faith whenever I’m being realistic about a bad situation. Yes through God all things are possible but that doesn’t mean God will give you the results you want 🙄🙄🙄
'Prosperity Gospel,' more or less.
It's a very natural outgrowth of synergistic theology. Any denomination which says that YOU are responsible for BELIEVING HARD ENOUGH in order to be saved is going to also lend itself to saying that not only must you make your choice, and believe hard enough, but also if you don't have "enough" fruits of the spirit then you still aren't believing hard enough. This then is very easy to twist to use Phillipians 4 as a bludgeon to say "Ahh, well if you were *really* a Christian, if you *really* believe, if you *really* believe hard enough, then you would be content in all things. You're not content, so you're not believing hard enough. So you must be going to hell."
How great is it, then, that not one iota of our own efforts makes a difference. That Christ has already done all there is to be done. That He has washed us in His blood, that in the waters of baptism we are united with Him, adopted into His family, marked with His name. How great is it that He says "All you need is faith", and then He sends the Holy Spirit to grant that faith. We have a God who tells us "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine." We're so lucky that it doesn't matter what we do. It's wonderful to never have to worry, "Am I believing hard enough?" It's wonderful that if you are anxious about anything, if you desire that which you have not been blessed with, you can still always know that it is not your fault, and that these feelings do not condemn you.

I kinda wanna agree with this, because I definitely recognize the description of overly synergistic theology. Yet, is synergy not real? If not, what are you going to say to the congregant who is like "help, I have this sin problem of this sin I keep struggling with and I'm not sure how to stop." Are you going to say something like "don't worry, it's not your fault, God just hasn't yet seen fit to give you the virtues to quit." ?
Right, I kind of rushed some things because tumblr (and I had to get to my hair appointment), but when I'm talking about synergism I'm talking in the realm of Justification, i.e. "On the last day, how will you be judged? Will you be in the new creation, or will you be left in the eternal fires?" What you're asking about I would more classify as being part of sanctification, literally "holy making", or the process by which we grow in faith to become less like ourselves and more like Christ. And a key part of that is to reject sin. Something that yes, does require effort, but effort that is only possible through the strength granted by the Holy Spirit. We are called to put away things of the flesh consistently throughout scripture. But we are flesh. Our very nature is corrupted, fallen, and sinful. So only through the power of God are we able to do this. And these good works, this rejection of sin, this is not really even our own doing in as much as it is God's doing. You might imagine it like trying to take scissors away from a toddler. The only role the toddler really plays is whether he clings tightly or lets go.

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and
The era of the “ten blue links” is officially over.
At its Google I/O conference on Tuesday, Google unveiled an AI-powered overhaul of Search centered around a reimagined “intelligent search box” — what the company describes as the biggest change to this entry point to the web since the search box debuted more than 25 years ago.
Instead of returning a simple list of links, Google Search will drop users into AI-powered interactive experiences at times. Google is also introducing tools that can dispatch “information agents” to gather information on a user’s behalf, along with tools that let users build personalized mini apps tailored to their needs.
The resulting experience will no longer look much like how people envision Google Search, which has long been defined by ranked links to websites that have the information you need.
With the revamped Search experience, the new search box simply expands to accommodate longer, more conversational queries, rather than making you decide what type of search experience or mode you want to choose at the start of your query. It will also have a new AI-powered query suggestion system that goes beyond autocomplete to help people craft more complex and nuanced queries, Google says.
Google’s AI Overviews will also allow users to ask follow-up questions in AI Mode, beginning Tuesday, the company noted.
No more 'just Google it' because you can't trust that the AI or that the results haven't been poisoned.
Here's a short list of search engines I recommend that don't push AI and instead go the old-school route with actual website results.
I'll be honest, I've been using the AIs for some of these searches anyway because regular keyword search hasn't been working right for the past 5 years. If you want actual information on something, you're just going to get dozens of blogs saying inane surface level nonsense, pinterest listings, amazon listings, etc. I wanted to find narrow metal bands I could use for sewing recently, but searches like "1/8 inch wide metal strip" or "steel flat wire" didn't give any relevant results. Just a bunch of results for bar stock, sheet metal, or braided wire. This has happened other times with more egregious issues where it gets too aggressive with trying to assume that what you want is the popular thing, making niche things almost impossible to search unless you use the *exact* right wording, and if you're searching for something you probably don't have all the right wording.

genuinely one of my favourite details about Bram Stokers Dracula that isn't really transferred to the pop culture is that vampires have irridescent eyes, they appear brown at a glance, however when light is reflected on them they seem to go red!
another thing that pop culture latched onto is this idea that you might use a wreath of garlic bulbs to ward off a vampire, however, in the book there is a popular use of garlic blossoms rather than the bulbs. i think these are a lot prettier and way more versatile for stylisation! you could have a garlic flower crown.
also like the cowboy part can we please stop omitting the fact that there is a real ass cowboy in Bram Stokers Dracula and hes from real ass Texas and he has a fucking gun and he tries to fucking shoot Dracula

Did your parents ever give you The Talk when you got to be that age?
My parents gave me The Talk and I felt it was adequate
My parents gave me a talk that was grossly inadequate
My parents knew I already knew (they were right) and so did nothing
My parents left this deliberately up to the schools
My parents outsourced this to another trusted source
My parents ignored this responsibility of theirs
I don't have parents / similar situation
Other / I'm bald
They bought me an American Girl book about puberty and let me learn the rest in school (I went to a private Christian school that they trusted, it was decent)
I don't know how "gave me an age appropriate book detailing the mechanics, and then had various scattered discussions over the course of my upbringing about sexual ethics" counts. There was never a "The Talk" because it was sort of just... baked into being raised to not be a promiscuous rake?
