den-o climax cop movie thoughts (spoilers of course)
i should start posting my extremely irrelevant media thoughts thank you @most-calm-revice-and-geats-fan for the rec :^]
negataros + co
big fan of this guy actually
OBSESSED with how he kept mentioning his "evil organization" but never indicated what it was trying to accomplish. literally all my evil organization OCs
absolutely nobody comments on how his appearance and name are "evil version of their best friend"
the friggin dark dealmaking dining room purely for ambiance + all the badguys being yakuza + he just decided to blow up his entire hideout KDJGLIKF
yuuto and deneb's bodyguard outfits , deneb's long sparkly scarf, that's my special guy
cop theme
love how the denliner police's role of stopping evil imagin doesn't actually mean anything because. that's what they were already doing LOL
really, truly, obsessed with the elements they chose to make this movie coplike
1) their coolguy intro stating cops are above the law ("they don't need badges or warrants")
2) every character gets to use REAL FIREARMS
3) baby's first criminal profiling LMAOOOOOOOOOOO
general
so far i've barely seen any non-suit toku fights (or toku women getting to fight!), so like yuuto vs. henchwoman was CRAZY COOL.… THANK YOU CHOREOGRAPHERS AND STUNTPEOPLE!!!!!!!!
the friggin clown imagin loudly falling then unfalling like a youtube poop absolutely astounded me
last but not least THE FAVORITISM KILLED ME kiva characters appeared in literally 3 scenes and the guy didn't even have lines in one of them. why even bother calling it a crossover 😭 I LOVE KAMEN RIDER SO MUCH
wait i just looked it up and that was kiva's first movie????????????????? 💀💀💀
verdict: currently my favorite den-o movie, i laughed so hard at how (unintentionally?) absurd it was GOOD GRAVY!!!!!
YAY!
I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed Climax Deka. Of course, compared to a lot more Rider movies, it's not too much; it did get the least amount of viewership in cinemas when it came out according to Imagin Anime and Eve's statistics of all the Den-O movies. It's still enjoyable! I've watched it a few times myself when watching with friends.
The funny thing is, from what I know, what Negataros wants is to take over the world and probably revive the Imagin race. He's considered a "stray Imagin" (in this context, hagure/はぐれ, meaning "stray from the pack), so is the Pink Rabbit and Clown technically, and all Imagin after that since at this point, the Imagin aren't supposed to exist naturally without Kai. Another thing is how unserious everything sounds, yet Negataros is serious as all hell! I mean, bro just blows up his own base to prove his power and takes pride in watching the flames (I love the chuckle he makes so much...). He's just evil Momo while also the opposite of him; always so calm and level-headed, and he has a noticeable growl in his voice when he's PISSED! The CSM Den-O Belt(s) show this the best! This is all thanks to the voice of Hikaru Midorikawa, who has a more active role in anime and the Super Sentai series (Negataros is his only Kamen Rider role lol). And of course, literally nobody points out the obvious similarities between him and Momo, just Momo raging over his transformation! (Nega Den-O is technically classed as a doppelgänger Rider, same for Bujin Gaim) This guy has grown onto me a TON! (Also the place he wants to destroy first is the National Diet Building, just some tourism facts. I'm not sure of the exact building Negataros Corps is set in, sorryyyy)
And then there's the DenLiner Police, barely taking anything seriously. Momo is just cool, but then again, who wants to trust him with firearms in the first place? At least Owner knows what he's doing...Oh, and we're not forgetting Suzuki. Basically Ichijo, but not Ichijo (haven't seen Kuuga, this is all I know of him) Honestly, his bravery is admirable in a way. Other than that, can't say too much on them, it's just the usual Den-O shenanigans (still forever in love with the scene where Ryuuta and Airi meet).
The henchwoman is named Sarah! I watched a clip of the Behind the Scenes where she talks in a mini-interview about her experience with performing with Yuuto (she speaks in full English (she's Australian) which is subtitled into Japanese). It's also just hilarious that she lost TO A LITTLE GIRL!!! Her Imagin (the Clown Imagin), I can't say too much on, powerwise and motif. I don't look at the others except for Nega and it clearly shows haha (but hey, four Rabbit Imagin altogether...). But yeah, I can agree absolutely on the lack of Kiva and how confusing it is with him in there. You KNOW for sure that if Kiva weren't there, both during the fight against Nega Den-O and the big train fight, Negataros would've easily won. I joke a lot with friends that Kiva was just like "Let me in! I'm here too! Don't forget me!!" How'd Castle Doran get into the Sands of Time anyway?! Bet Nega's still sulking over that. This was the first movie to start that kind of trend (Den-O started a LOT of trends, I can tell you that,) so of course it was bound to be kinda weak in that...
Okay, now onto the main man himself!
I've been the main carrier of all the Negataros knowledge and I can proudly see I've been spreading it. It's fun to watch, as fun as it is to study him! He's surprisingly had absolute major expansion, and it's amazing to see all the stuff he's been given over the years! I heard Den-O's got a 20th anniversary; I'd love to see him again, but I think it'll all depend on the suit(s) statuses and if Midorikawa ever wants to come back and reprise his only Kamen Rider role, but time shallst tell. At this point, I can't even tell when I started to bring all my headcanoning and information tracking to him, but I've been seeing a surprising rise in his acknowledgement this year, half of it is because of meeee...
Anyways, I've tracked quite a lot of him! I'm happy to share quite a bit!
The "N" on Negataros' armor doesn't just mean "Nega(tive)," it also means "nise/ニセ" (it was Katakana in Nirasawa's concept design and the Detail Of Heroes movie edition of Den-O), the Japanese word for fake.
There is an alternative ending to Climax Deka in a SIC Novel which as Den-O travel back in time to April 3rd 1971; I think it works great on Negataros' character and how dangerous he can really be. I've translated it and you can find it here. It's not revealed to you in the movie, but it's revealed here that Negataros' Imagin Motif is the story of Issun Boshi, another classic Japanese tale and one that features an oni. Quite an interesting one too!
Speaking of the SIC, Negataros' SIC Figure features one of his weapons, that being the Negatarosword, a much more deadlier version of the Momotarosword. He appears in the old edition of the Ganbaride Arcade game and has a special attack named "Quartet of Hell," where he uses all four variants of the Taros' weapons! Looking closely, they're just the original weapons retextured into black and red, and I can only assume this was before his SIC was made? I'm not too sure personally.
Another funny detail; The Nega Den-O suit you see in the movie was actually just a CGI'd Den-O Sword Form! In one of the photobooks of Climax Deka, it shows that they just stuck stickers onto the Tribal Markings (the teal markings on the suit) onto a regular Den-O Sword Form and used their tech to colour him purple. You see there is a few goofs where the CGI doesn't work properly or there's flashes of the original red. However, by Decade or W, he got a real suit that is used for stageshows! The more noticeable is one with Ghost (Nega acts like he doesn't want to be there when not fighting...) The Detail of Heroes book shows a bit more into both suits, I hope to translate them one day in hopes of studying more of this guy, he's practically always under a microscope here.
Most of Negataros/Kamen Rider Nega Den-O's appearances are seen in the Compati Hero Series, which crosses over Kamen Rider, Ultraman and Gundam! There's a few he particularly appears in; from what I remember, he's in Heroes VS, Lost Heroes 1 (both he has a lot more dialogue in him) and Lost Heroes 2 (as the boss of Cube 1) (these are just from all I've played, so I don't know if he appears anywhere else). He only appears other times in the Climax Heroes series (minus Climax Fighters and Climax Scramble of course). Listening to his voice, I'll say that Midorikawa does a better job voicing him in his future media compared to the movie! I've heard from a source or two that Nega's voice is actually pitched. I do like how he just sounds bored casually, up until fighting or when he's really angry! Just like Momo (they're almost like twins...I HC them to be twins actually, but then again I'll save a headcanon ramble)
It's getting late as I write this so I'll round this off with a Negataros piece drawn just for you! Glad to hear the movie went great, it's been great to share a lot of my opinions and knowledge! (Still can't believe this was all from you pointing out the "evil Den-O" of a Rider minifigure toyline)
OUGH THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TRIVIA BOUNTY I'M EATING AND MUNCHING IT ALL!!!!! just gonna haphazardly respond to things in order LOL
[Climax Deka] did get the least amount of viewership in cinemas when it came out
i had no idea, that's crazy considering it's like the 2nd den-o movie out of 100?? i assume the summer movies are typically the most successful??? den-o's popularity within kr still makes me laugh, i'm lucky the first series i got into has so much to see!
from what I know, what Negataros wants is to take over the world and probably revive the Imagin race …
THANK YOU NOW I CAN ACTUALLY FIGURE OUT WHAT'S GOING ON LMAO!!! really appreciate the original japanese vocabulary explanations too, i get to learn even more YIPPEEEEEEEE
the post-series imagin not being affiliated with kai is super interesting. basically every den-o mechanic (imagin, timeline situations, singularity points) operates very inconsistently considering the target audience likely doesn't care LMAO, so it's fun to hear the writers basically go "yeah we said that, but we still need enemies for them to fight" LOL
i do love a lively villain, so i wouldn't have guessed that despite being very serious, negataros was WAY more fun to watch than the other movie villains i've seen, probably cus he's a suit character + he's commitment to his villainous vibe, which are both things i adore HEHE
thank you hikaru midorikawa!!!!!!!!!!!! wow i didn't know about doppelgänger riders either, that's fun!! also the diet building is really funny JGKDFM NO MORE GOVERNMENT
wait also my and my friends are obsessed with owner, i love how he's just always Doing Things and also conveniently losing passes/trains left and right for plot purposes LMAO, definitely need to draw him
Oh, and we're not forgetting Suzuki. Basically Ichijo, but not Ichijo
YEAH THAT GUY! what a classic den-o ending with his dad 😌 i also don't know anything about ichijo or kuuga LOL, looking forward to appreciating things even more once i've seen more kr!!
AIRI MEETING RYUUTAROS WAS SO PEAK
The henchwoman is named Sarah! I watched a clip of the Behind the Scenes where she talks in a mini-interview about her experience with performing with Yuuto
THAT RULES any chance you still have a link??? 👀 and/or where do you find kr behind the scenes stuff in general??? i've only found those long "making of" videos on youtube for like, a couple of the den-o movies, as well as ryoutarou's actor breakdancing LOL
baby hana with the steel pipe is even more powerful than baby hana with the bazooka, i love it
thank you kiva for saving everyone, when all 4 taros fight on their own they really love getting their asses kicked LMAOOOO also THE DRAGON CASTLE IS STILL CRAZY… i've only seen the first ep of kiva………..
I've been the main carrier of all the Negataros knowledge and I can proudly see I've been spreading it
as always, minor character enjoyers play a vital role in the ecosystem HEHEHE thank you for your service!!! i wouldn't have known about this guy otherwise!
considering kai showed up for like. very little of the show proper and other movie villains get exploded after their first and only appearance, it's really interesting to see negataros become the closest(?) den-o has to a recurring villain!! coming directly from a series (yakuza) that LOVES killing off their villains, it can be squandered-potential central out there LMAO which is to say i'm happy negataros gets to keep causing trouble and growing as a character!!! the more interesting the opponent, the more the protagonists get to shine, too!
OOOH THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY!!! suit statuses!!! i'm super curious about how the industry operates regarding suit and prop preservation/deconstruction/reuse!! definitely want to learn all about how suits are made, but that's entirely off topic
Anyways, I've tracked quite a lot of him! I'm happy to share quite a bit!
did not know the nise thing but i actually DO recognize that word from a different show LOL! 💪 also, toku monster concept art is probably one of the coolest things in the world
TY FOR THE NOVEL TRANSLATION!!! 👀👀 i'll have to read this later, but the first several pages and the diorama photos look incredible!! this must have taken so much work, what a treat!!!
ok negataros getting everyone's weapons is really funny, "i'm better than all of you" LMAO
I THOUGHT THE NEGA DEN-O SUIT HAD SOMETHING STRANGE ABOUT IT. RECOLORING IN POST IS KILLING MEEEEEEEEEE that's actually hilarious. he spent his entire villain budget on a full-service personal restaurant, nothing left for his transformation… i'm obsessed with how they CG stuff like the possession eye colors, always thinking about the poor editors dutifully tracking and masking EVERY SINGLE FRAME………
glad he got his own suit later HEHE! sooooo charming that he gets sulky when he can't fight, not silly enough to play along with everyone else… 😆
wait i had no idea they could cross over with gundam, i've never seen this game series before! good gravy this wikipedia image is just too cutiefuls, i love the inclusion of ultraman's little eyeholes…!
i don't play fighting games but for a while i was obsessed with reading about their characters LOL! fighting games are such a fun way to present over-the-top characters and silly/cool interactions among the cast, so i'm glad negataros gets time to shine here!! also makes sense that he became the villain rep since kai doesn't really fight on his own huh!
by "Nega's voice is actually pitched", do you mean they edited the actor's lines to sound higher/lower?? i haven't heard of anyone doing that before (besides for special effects purposes), so that's neat!! thank you again midorikawa!!!
I HC [Negataros and Momotaros] to be twins actually
THAT RULES i'd love to hear your headcanons if you've got time??? how do imagin genetics(?) work??? 👀👀 i guess this was addressed near the start of your novel translation, but did they come from the same person (ryoutarou)? how'd the two of them get separated?
if you'd like to read my den-o thoughts/headcanons that are even more specific and irrelevant than before, i dumped them on my website LOL
AND AUGH HOW SWEET THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS BEAUTIFUL ART!!!!!!!!!! he's so cute!!!!! i love learning these kinds of obscure(?) trivias and production facts, so i really appreciate your humoring me with all this incredible info!!! :^))
also, here is a negataros for you as well HEHEHE i'm feeding him almond jelly because 1) i want almond jelly 2) it goes with his dim sum 3) it's pudding, also…!
I JUST WOKE UP AEEEEEE NEGAAAAAA!!!! I DID NOT EXPECT THIS HE'S ADORABLE THANKIIII!!! >w< Now onto providing the rest of the info!! (I'll shorten my own responses because ye)
In Eve's words: Climax Deka got around 600,000+ views. Ore, Tanjou! got 1,118,400 (it was big news at the time since it was the first of the mid-series movies, and Gaoh was the oldest Kamen Rider at the time at the age of 51), The Final Countdown got 605,000, Den-O x Decade got 666,000 and the Chou Den-O Trilogy got 1,100,000. Quite a bit honestly for all of them, because it was because of the start of the trend and barely anyone knew about Kiva...Kiva's just there it's just kinda funny! Each movie definitely has its fans though, I can say that! (the third edition of the Imagin Anime looks a lot at past Rider stuff, production and behind the scenes outside of their usual shenanigans)
I agree, Owner is pretty extraordinary! I heard he's (not sure if he still is now) been in Sasuke (Japanese Ninja Warrior) and was one of their oldest competitors. He has a good amount of scenes where he's super active, so it's really impressive! Oh, and speaking of him losing crap, there's a manga of the Den-O movies (minus Ore, Tanjou!) and of course Owner is training with his fried rice...Kai on the other hand...there's really not much to him, he's one of the least known villains in all of Rider actually since he appears WAY too late into the show to be interesting (in spite of early foreshadowing), and it feels more insulting since we had Gaoh prior. However, I hear that he plays the main protagonist of Ultraman Orb and talks a lot of his Ultraman days on his YouTube channel!
I've indeed got the link (I am certain there is another part or two to this but I'm not too familiar with working this site at the momet)! Also while we're at it, I'll give the link to the Ghost Stageshow as well just so you can see the actual Nega Den-O suit in action (it's kinda hard to see him since he's in the bottom right corner when idle) I am certain Kohana would've at least done a lot of damage with the bazooka if it weren't for the extreme recoil, otherwise she can just easily kick down a bunch of men and swordfight a woman who wields an actual sword with a pipe! I think some of the behind the scenes stuffs come from DVD rips, so they're really rare to find, even rarer if they're actually subbed...
(I can't think of anything else to sayyyy) While I've counted a bit more appearances of Nega Den-O, I've seen Gaoh appear a few times as well! There's another game series called Battride War where Gaoh appears in the second and third instalments (Genesis) but not Nega Den-O. He appears in the Compati Hero series too! He makes more media appearances than in actual Rider since his suit was used to make Yuuki's (main villain Rider of Final Countdown, though Yuuki himself appears a few times too), but it's still good to see him; he was popular for his time! I still find it silly I ended up skipping the movie because I was confused at first and thought it wasn't vital, but it seemed it really was when I rewatched it to tag along with a friend, and now I'm glad I did! There is also another Compati Heroes game called Super Hero Generation which has Gaoh appear again, and again he gets some more dialogue! I haven't touched those games in quite a while so I can't comment too much on the dialogue specifically, but I'll still recommend them! (Just note they're all JP only)
Dang, you've written quite a lot in terms of headcanoning! I'm not too huge on my own unfortunately, and all I can say on mine is that I based a good portion of them on their human pasts. Negataros' origins aren't explained much in the SIC, but they do suspect there was another Ryotaro in another timeline, so maybe that's where he came from before he came to the present? Also considering how the Imagin don't have any memory of their old selves, I doubt Nega and Momo would remember being twins, and if they did/it was discovered...that would probably lead to a LOT of shit going down! I would be certain that Nega at least cared for Momo back then as a human. I think it'll be best if I dump the rest in DMs, so look out for them!
Once again thank you for allowing me to dump all that info, and thanks so much for the adorable art!!! I love ittttttt!!!
