What do you think you're doing? What's the matter? Wipe that look off your face and roll your shoulders back. You think that tummy you have is a problem? You think your body shouldn't roll and fold like that?
What sort of a butch are you? You have better things to worry about. Get away from the mirror and out in the yard, we have wood to chop. We're hosting a bonfire and all our dyke friends are coming. You're going to drink beer and eat smores and say thank you when I hand you a hotdog, because I know you have an appetite, and it's not butch of you to pretend you don't.
Look at your hands. You want to work on your body? Make those stronger. Look at your arms. See how wide those things are? See the way that you fill up a room if you want to, fill out your shirts the way babydyke-you could only dream of?
Put your heaviest boots on and your sturdiest jeans and fuck in them. Remember all the parts of you that are tough and sturdy and wonderful.
So what if you're fat. So what if you're ugly. Wasn't that the whole point, back in the beginning? Think back to being fifteen and stealing shirts from your dad's closet. Remember being small enough that boys still tried to pick you up and spin you around? Let them try now. Let them come at you, plant your weight, hit your shoulder straight into their hips and take them down.
Learn to tackle. Learn to hold yourself big and sturdy. Learn to do something neat with your hands (yes, that, of course that, but also maybe whittling or something, I dunno).
Let me rough you up and show you how a butch can take it. Let me slap handprints into your skin, bite bruises into your flesh, learn to push and shove and leave bright red lines with your blunted nails.
Let me ruffle your hair and call you kid and hug you the way half of us always wished our dads weren't afraid to hug us, engulfing and inescapable. Bear hug. We have more in common with them than we do with the twinks people keep comparing us to (god love the twinks, even the evil ones, but that's not your hat. Take it off and let yourself breathe).
You're not on this planet to be dainty. You're not in this life to take up less space. Let your gut out, it shows you're well fed and you're surviving. Go pick up something heavy or throw something far, remind us all what that broad back was meant for. You're an animal; act like it.
