I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed
if you don’t know what a word means, look it up.
if you can’t look it up, use context clues.
Overuse of purple prose is a problem in Fantasy, but “scrying” is just, like, the word for a specific kind of magic. That degree of specificity and the vibe archaic arcane-sounding words lend to the magic they describe is a feature of the genre that readers expect & want. This is like getting mad a book about Egypt used the word Pharaoh or papyrus instead of “king” or “paper made out of reeds”.
These people are sexual predators.
If you are in WASHINGTON this is not yet law, this initiative will be on the ballot Nov 3 THIS YEAR. VOTE NO. You have the ability to prevent this from becoming law.
Not only is this invasive as fuck, it also serves to discourage/exclude student athletes who are too poor to see a doctor regularly (or have unstable home lives). Who are some of the kids who need sports most.
Who tf is paying for all that genetic screening anyways? I expect it'll cost less than the $600 I paid for my health screening but how is this not an excessive burden on families who happen to have daughters instead of sons who want to play a sport?
Like...options to either pay out of pocket for bloodwork (insurance wont have to pay in many cases, and it is NOT RELIABLE) genetic screening (insurance absolutely will not pay, and also intersex kids exist???) or "genital exam".
This is bad for all girls, especially poor girls and intersex girls, all just to be allowed to discriminate against trans girls.
In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o'clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would.
Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove ejected eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026, the city of Allendale, California."
Somewhere in the walls, relays clicked, memory tapes glided under electric eyes.
""Eight-one, tick-tock, eight-one o'clock, off to school, off to work, run, run, eight-one!" But no doors slammed.
It was raining outside. The weather box on the front door sang quietly: "Rain, rain, go away; rubbers, raincoats for today..."
Outside, the garage chimed and lifted its door to reveal the waiting car.
After a long wait the door swung down again.
At eight-thirty the eggs were shriveled and the toast was like stone. An aluminum wedge scraped them into the sink. The dirty dishes were dropped into a hot washer and emerged twinkling dry.
"Nine-fifteen," sang the clock, "time to clean."
Tiny robot mice thudded against chairs, whirling their mustached runners, Kneading the rug nap, sucking gently at hidden dust. Then, they popped into their burrows. The house was clean.
"Ten o'clock." The sun came out from behind the rain. The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles.
"Ten-fifteen." The garden sprinklers pelted the windowpanes,
running down the charred west side where the house had been burned evenly free of its white paint. The entire west face of the house was black, save for five places. Here the silhouette in paint of a man mowing a lawn. Here, as in a photograph, a woman bent to pick flowers. Still farther over, their images burned on wood in one titanic instant, a small boy, hands flung into the air; higher up, the image of a thrown ball, and opposite him a girl, hand raised to catch a ball which never came down.
The five spots of paint - the man, the woman, the children, the ball -
remained. The rest was a think charcoaled layer.
"Twelve noon."
A dog whined on the front porch.
The front door recognized the dog voice and opened. The dog, once huge and fleshy, but now gone to bone and covered with sores, moved in and through the house, tracking mud.
The dog frothed at the mouth, ran wildly in circles, biting at its tail, spun in a frenzy, and died. It lay in the parlor for an hour.
"Two-fifteen."
The dog was gone.
In the cellar, the incinerator glowed suddenly and a whirl of sparks leaped up the chimney.
"Two thirty-five."
Bridge tables sprouted from patio walls.
Playing cards fluttered. Martinis manifested while music played.
But the tables were silent and the cards untouched.
At four o'clock the tables folded back through the paneled walls. "Four-thirty."
The nursery walls glowed.
Animals took shape: yellow giraffes, blue lions, pink antelopes, lilac panthers. Hidden films clocked through well-oiled sprockets, and the glas walls lived. It was the children's hour.
"Six, seven, eight o'clock." The dinner dishes manipulated like magic
tricks, and in the study a click.
"Nine-five." A voice spoke from the study ceiling:
"Mrs. McClellan, which poem would you like this evening?"
The house was silent.
The voice said at last,
"Since you express no preference, I shall select a poem at random."
"Sara Teasdale. As I recall, your favorite...
"There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done,
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn Would scarcely know that we were gone.
At ten o'clock a falling tree bough crashed through the kitchen window shattering cleaning solvent over the stove. The room was ablaze in an instant.
"Fire!" screamed a voice. Water pumps shot water from the ceilings while the voices took it up in chorus: "Fire, fire, fire!"
The house tried to save itself, but the wind blew and sucked upon the fire.
Scurrying water rats pistoled their water, and ran for more. And the wall sprays let down showers of mechanical rain.
But too late. The quenching rain ceased.
The reserve water supply which had filled baths and washed dishes for many quiet days was gone.
From attic trapdoors gushed a green chemical.
But the fire was clever. It had sent flames outside the house, up through The attic to the pumps there. An explosion! The attic brain which directed the pumps was shattered.
The house shuddered, its bared skeleton cringing from the heat. And the voices wailed, "Fire, fire, run, run," like a tragic nursery rhyme, a dozen voices, high, low. One, two, three, four, five voices died.
Other choruses could be heard announcing the time, playing music, or cutting the lawn by remote-control mower. A scene of maniac confusion, yet unity; singing, screaming, and one voice, read poetry aloud in the firey study, until all the film spools burned.
In the kitchen the stove could be seen making breakfasts at a psychopathic rate, ten dozen eggs, six loaves of toast, twenty dozen bacon strips, which eaten by the fire, started the stove working again, hysterically hissing!
The crash. The attic smashing into kitchen and parlor. The parlor into cellar, cellar into sub-cellar.
Smoke and silence.
Among the ruins, one wall stood alone.
Within the wall, a last voice said,
over and over, "Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is ...”
the thing about mothers in fiction is that a lot of fandoms seem to be under the impression that the worst thing a woman can possibly do is be a bad mother. like they can forgive deadbeat dads easily but the moment a woman is a bad or even mediocre mother she's the devil incarnate to them. and then you're like "i like her and i think she's interesting" and they immediately go "oh so you think it's okay to be a bad mother (which is the most evil thing a woman can be)". and don't even get me started on how they react to female characters who are bad stepmothers

Me: okay I am done talking about this thing that's upsetting me. Bye.
*literally two seconds later*: AND ANOTHER THING
idk who needs to hear this but it’s healthier for you to just accept that you’re gonna be kinda fat than it is to live the rest of your life miserably trying to monitor yourself to maintain a skinny weight your body doesn’t want to hold onto
“nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” what feels even better is living a life where your self-worth isn’t entirely dependent on your thinness and you don’t constantly monitor and shame yourself. attaching the tweet that was worth at least five hours of therapy for me
This is some Scooby Doo shit XD
WTF happened in Ceuta...?
This explainer is long (even for me) because it needs to be. There's context and nuance without which none of this makes any sense.
On July 30-31, 2026, between 50,000 and 60,000 people, mostly young, male, Moroccan citizens, crossed from Morocco into the Spanish city of Ceuta in about 24 hours, adding roughly 60-80% to Ceuta's population in one day.
To put it mildly, the idea that this could have been spontaneous strains credulity. This wasn't organic.
Ceuta is a Spanish city sitting on the Moroccan coast, an exclave entirely surrounded by Moroccan territory except for a strip of Mediterranean coastline. Spain controls both Ceuta and Melilla, another enclave further east, making them the only land borders the EU shares with Africa.
Ceuta and Melilla, unsurprisingly, have some of the most fortified borders on earth, with six-meter fences, thermal cameras, and armed forces policing their own citizens on each side against exactly this.
Still, thousands of mostly young Moroccan men waded in through the breakwaters, cars burned on the Moroccan side, Spanish troops deployed, and the death toll seemed to be 67-86 the last time I checked - but Spain's government and Ceuta's regional authorities don't seem to agree on the count.
This wave of 50-60k was not made up of the sub-Saharan African migrants transiting through Morocco who usually dominate Ceuta stories.
With sub-Saharan nationals, home countries sometimes refuse to take them back - but Spain and Morocco established a bilateral readmission agreement in 1992, so returning Moroccan citizens was comparatively simple and quick.
Why did 50-60k mostly young Moroccan men choose to do this in one spot at one time?
Organic pressure builds gradually and gets absorbed in smaller waves, the way Ceuta had actually been experiencing it for months, with 300+ arrivals per day. 60k young Moroccan men converging on one stretch of coastline in one day doesn't fit that pattern. This is different.
Some of the Moroccan migrants reported seeing posts on social media calling people to gather at the border, and this seems similar to a 2024 incident where Moroccan intelligence arrested people for "inciting a mass migration attempt" over Facebook.
The New York Times has reported that Moroccan police didn't just fail to stop Moroccans from crossing into Ceuta on July 30th-31st of 2026 - they actively urged people to cross.
That's not at all an unreasonable thing to suggest...because there's some precedence.
In May 2021, about 9,000 people crossed after Moroccan police eased controls and opened the fence gates, prompting a European Parliament resolution. Two months before this most recent late July incident, Morocco again loosened controls and let roughly 10,000 people into Ceuta.
Why now?
A Spanish court had recently narrowed summary-return rules to migrants physically breaching the fence, excluding those caught by cameras beforehand. Spanish President Sánchez himself has publicly said smugglers exploited that ruling to sell migrants on this moment.
If we take that explanation at face value, it could account for individual motivation, but it doesn't really account for tens of thousands acting on it in the same 24-hour window when Moroccan security actively encouraged it.
So who/what is really behind this?
The leading theory (for reasons noted above) is that Morocco created this situation as a deliberate pressure play.
Morocco doesn't recognize Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla and regards them as occupied territories.
Spain's counter-claim is that it has held Ceuta since 1580 and Melilla since 1497, both predating the modern Moroccan state, which didn't exist in its current form until centuries later, making these historic Spanish territory rather than colonial carve-outs from a pre-existing Morocco. (That's Preisdent Sánchez's view, but he doesn't extend the same argument to Israel - we'll come back to that shortly.)
Morocco argues that geographic proximity to Africa should override that history.
This dispute is not settled international law.
Morocco also has a live dispute over Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony Morocco annexed in 1975. The Polisario Front, representing the Sahrawi population there, still wants independence. In 2022, Spain broke with four decades of policy and backed Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara instead, a reversal widely believed to have come from precisely this kind of border pressure from Morocco.
Rabat has used this same play twice, opening and closing Ceuta's border as leverage over Madrid.
There's a recent potential trigger, too. Sánchez made an official visit last month to Algeria, Morocco's rival and the Polisario Front's main backer. The timing supports the impression that this wasn't a spontaneous mass migration, it was a message sent from Morocco to Madrid.
If this is Morocco flexing it's ability to over-run Ceuta's borders...what does it hope to gain?
It's likely Morocco seeks to reassert the occupied-territory framing on Ceuta and Melilla. Sánchez has repeatedly called Gaza and the West Bank occupied territories, and it isn't only Moroccans and Israelis who think he's a hypocrite and an asshole.
They're also probably punishing Spain for recently warming up to Algeria and reminding Madrid that Morocco controls the migration tap. This seems to set the stage for Morocco extracting future concessions from Madrid (and the EU)...which seems to be just what Morocco did in 2022.
Why wouldn't Morocco just...say this?
States don't announce leverage plays like this, it's more effective, instructive, and motivating to create facts on the ground and let everyone else draw the predictable conclusions.
To date, though, Spain's government has publicly declined to draw the widely-held conclusion that this is a Moroccan flex, calling Morocco a reliable partner.
That might be a genuine (foolish) assessment, but that seems unlikely. More likely is that it is diplomatically neccessary for Spain to publicly state what it privately knows to be false...because Spain needs Moroccan cooperation on migration and trade and they know damn well Morocco can turn the tap back on at any time and flood Ceuta with Moroccans.
Why/how exactly are Jews being blamed...?!
When aren't Jews blamed for things they have nothing to do with?
Despite Israel having no role at all in the Spain-Morocco disputes related to Ceuta, Melilla, or Western Sahara, conspiracy theorists from Alex Jones to Candace Owens have started blaming Israel.
A tweet from Bibi's son Yair Netanyahu in 2019 is often cited:
I think the Netanyahus are assholes, but Yair's claim of hypocrisy here is neither baseless nor incitment (unless one wants to suggest that the Moroccan street cares deeply what Yair Netanyahu thinks they should do).
Assume for a moment that this was a Moroccan flex. Assume that Spain can't call Morocco out for it. Assume it's obvious to informed parties that this wasn't spontaneous. How can attention be drawn away from the hypocrisy and powerlessness of the Sánchez government?
If you strip a messy, multi-causal event of its actual state actors and motives and insert the actor everyone's primed to blame through centuries of conspiracy theories instead...that might deflect some scrutiny into the actual causes and delay accoutability. That's how antisemitism has most often been historically deployed by state actors.
And, it must be mentioned, all sorts of online influencing creatures collect clicks through antisemitic conspiracy theories. It's a grift.
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon did something other diplomats might find unwise when he pointed out what he (like Yair Netanyahu) sees as colonial hypocrisy from Spain's government...the same Sánchez government that routinely accuses Israel of being a colonial, occupying European usurper.
"Spain, which never misses an opportunity to lecture Israel, has declared a state of emergency in Ceuta following the crisis over its immigration policy...Maybe before it continues lecturing us, it's time it explained to the world why it still maintains colonial enclaves in Africa."
It is arguably a fair point and the antisemitism of both Spain and the Sanchez government are undeniable.
As of today, Spanish officials say most of the people who crossed are back in Morocco, many voluntarily after finding no food or shelter waiting for them in Ceuta.
If this was a deliberate pressure play (and I think it was), how should we read the remarkably speedy way Morocco took its citizens back? Doesn't that read less like Morocco trying to permanently offload people onto Spain and more like a short, sharp demonstration of its capability to flood the border and scare the mierda out of los Españoles.
If this was Moroccan flex, they either expected the death toll or accepted it as the cost for their power play.
This deadly, cynical aspect of the story is getting far less scrutiny than it deserves.

theres an assumption that if an alien has an alien gender system they wouldnt understand homophobia but maybe they just have their own more complex version of homophobia. alien society with eight genders and a horribly complex web of what is considered socially acceptable that makes the gender binary look like easy mode. i'm inventing homophobia 2 and it's terrible.
it's something that gets to me about the handwringing over ozempic and the especially skeletal celebrities recently. there has never been a time when hollywood has not REVOLVED around disordered eating and warped body image. the only difference is now they look unappealingly sick.
I was reading an article about karen carpenter, and her friends and the journalist AFTER her death from anorexia were praising her initial dieting behaviour when it took her from "chubby" to slender. her behaviour didn't change from that point, but they were just frustrated she didn't stop while she was at her most conventionally attractive.
you are expected to be obsessed with what you eat and how you look. acknowledging that this is an obsession which kills people is at odds with our entire popular conception of what "health" even is. so even if the eating is disordered all along, we only call it that in the individuals who don't let us maintain the smokescreen that this is healthy and normal. you can tell it's disordered eating because they look bad. and recovering makes you more attractive.

people will take explicitly antisemitic rhetoric, even nazi rhetoric, and sub in “israel” for “jews,” and then when you call them on it they’ll go “ummm i was talking about israel not jews! stop conflating judaism and israel!”
and no i do not mean “talking about stuff israel is actually doing but if you stretch it it could sound like an obscure anrisemitic trope.” i mean like “israel got a bunch of moroccans to try to migrate to spain by convincing them spain would let them in, because they’re mad that spaniards are pro-palestine.”
thats just bog standard european neo-nazi “the jews are trying to destroy our countries by getting muslims to invade it under the guise of immigration” shit but with prettier words, pretty enough to get even a “leftist” to buy it. and its not actually leftist, btw, that should be obvious
huh i wonder why people are accusing george soros and israel of the same thing. i wonder what they have in common
as long as you say zio its fine
The replacement theory, and the ease with which white supremacists -- and make no mistake that this is an explicitly white supremacist thought -- blame Jews for the infiltration of a country and the undermining of its society was the unquestionably stated motivation of the Tree of Life mass shooter who killed 11 Jews during Shabbat morning worship in 2018.
These conspiracy theories have already proven deadly.
