“While building a plot entering in girls mind is the toughest thing, possibilities are infinite & you start appreciating feminism having options abundantly, once you done with that half work is done then you just need conflicts, build the lines, keep the man lurking around, give him a target, add salty ism and here to complete, put the girls mindset.
All great stories are after girls!”

Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didn’t know what he’d done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.
Why can’t we have a movie about him?
He was often called “Sempo”, an alternative reading of the characters of his first name, as that was easier for Westerners to pronounce.
His wife, Yukiko, was also a part of this; she is often credited with suggesting the plan. The Sugihara family was held in a Soviet POW camp for 18 months until the end of the war; within a year of returning home, Sugihara was asked to resign - officially due to downsizing, but most likely because the government disagreed with his actions.
He didn’t simply grant visas - he granted visas against direct orders, after attempting three times to receive permission from the Japanese Foreign Ministry and being turned down each time. He did not “misread” orders; he was in direct violation of them, with the encouragement and support of his wife.
He was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations in 1985, a year before he died in Kamakura; he and his descendants have also been granted permanent Israeli citizenship. He was also posthumously awarded the Life Saving Cross of Lithuania (1993); Commander’s Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1996); and the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2007). Though not canonized, some Eastern Orthodox Christians recognize him as a saint.
Sugihara was born in Gifu on the first day of 1900, January 1. He achieved top marks in his schooling; his father wanted him to become a physician, but Sugihara wished to pursue learning English. He deliberately failed the exam by writing only his name and then entered Waseda, where he majored in English. He joined the Foreign Ministry after graduation and worked in the Manchurian Foreign Office in Harbin (where he learned Russian and German; he also converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church during this time). He resigned his post in protest over how the Japanese government treated the local Chinese citizens. He eventually married Yukiko Kikuchi, who would suggest and encourage his acts in Lithuania; they had four sons together. Chiune Sugihara passed away July 31, 1986, at the age of 86. Until her own passing in 2008, Yukiko continued as an ambassador of his legacy.
It is estimated that the Sugiharas saved between 6,000-10,000 Lithuanian and Polish Jewish people.
It’s a tragedy that the Sugiharas aren’t household names. They are among the greatest heroes of WWII. Is it because they were from an Axis Power? Is it because they aren’t European? I don’t know. But I’ve decided to always reblog them when they come across my dash. If I had the money, I would finance a movie about them.
He told an interviewer:
You want to know about my motivation, don’t you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes, Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent.
People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many people’s lives….The spirit of humanity, philanthropy…neighborly friendship…with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situation—and because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.
He died in nearly complete obscurity in Japan. His neighbors were shocked when people from all over, including Israeli diplomatic personnel, showed up at quiet little Mr. Sugihara’s funeral.
I will forever reblog this, I wish more people would know about them!
I liked this before when it had way less information. Thank you, history-sharers.
Tucked away in a corner in L.A.’s Little Tokyo is a life-sized statue of Chiune, seated on a bench and smiling gently as he holds out a visa.
The stone next to him bears a quote from the Talmud; “He who saves one life, saves the entire world.”
I had no idea it existed until a few weeks ago, but it’s since become one of my favorite pieces of public art.
Chiune Sugihara. Original antifa.
PBS made a documentary about Chiune Sugihara in 2005. If you’re interested in him, it’s definitely worth checking out. (The PBS link above even has some interactive information to go along with the film.) Ask your local library if they have a copy/can order you one from another library. You won’t be disappointed!
kate beaton wasn’t kidding when she said look him up
i am going to find this and take him a present
always reblog mr sugihara
Just something I really want to share on here because it’s important.
this is really important to remember, even if you said something stupid and don’t feel like repeating it- it can still feel isolating to folks with hearing and auditory processing problems!
Honestly, as much as you might be frustrated at having to repeat yourself, just for a moment try to imagine how frustrated we are at having to as you to repeat yourself for possibly the fifth time because our brains just refuse to give the words the meaning we know is supposed to be there, or because there’s a frequency we can’t hear at which happens to be part of your vocal range, or any number of reasons.
Trust me. We’re frustrated too. Please be patient, because we really do want to hear what you said.
Some of y’all really think racism in America looks like this:
When it really looks like this
You are not exempt from racism just because your country’s version is not the same as ours
Oh def reblogging this version

They are not some anonymous “a tribe in India”, they are the War-Khasi. Speaking as a former anthro student and as a reference librarian, I am beyond sick of posts (and articles, and emails, and museum displays) like this that present the work of a people without actually naming the people. It’s erasure, it’s reducing the great works of a culture to an Ozymandias-esque curiosity for foreigners to consume rather than an accomplishment that should help bring awareness of that culture’s existence.
They are the War-Khasi, a division of the Khasi, a people who call themselves Hynñiew Trep. They live in Meghalaya, and they have been building these bridges in the town of Cherrapunji for longer than anyone knows. They are not anonymous.
@ayellowbirds Thank you for this!!
A few small corrections:
1. ‘Hynñiew trep’ (seven huts) is a part of folklore and refers to a place from which two tribes emerged: the Khasi and the Jaiñtia. Contemporarily, a region in eastern Meghalaya is called Ri Hynñiew Trep, where both the Khasi and the Jaiñtia tribes reside. It it does not refer to people and we do not call ourselves Hynñiew Trep.
2. Root bridges are not just located in Sohra (Cherrapunji is the colonial name of this town), but rather all throughout Meghalaya, particularly in the southern part. The earliest record of root bridges was in 1844, which happened to be the ones found in Sohra. Both Khasis and Jaiñtias have made root bridges for generations.
ALSO I’d like to point out that the root bridges and the environment that surrounds them are in danger due to tourism. Excessive advertising of these structures as tourist spots have caused stress that the roots have never had to endure even two decades prior. From being used by just the local residents, quite a few root bridges are now seeing hundreds of tourists everyday. There’s not only undue strain on the structures, but also pollution; people throw trash, are noisy, and do not respect the environment.
If you do visit the root bridges, please be respectful. Despite the prominent promotion of these bridges as tourist spots, people ought not to treat this as a structure available for consumption. People and other beings that use the root bridges are losing a very useful part of their lives; routes that have been around for centuries.
Why I have cred: I’m half Khasi
Thank you so much for the corrections!
People that get invested in fiction and examine fictional lore need to learn how to tell the difference between which lore is actually important to the series and which lore is an excuse for something.
If Dwarven women are capable of growing beards, but have cultural reasons not to, that is an excuse that they made not to give them beards.
If a female character can only wear skimpy clothing for some given reason, that is an excuse to sexualize her.
If an organization can only be populated men, that is often an excuse to not have to create female characters.
Its all made up. It isn’t a foundation of the universe that they can’t control. They wrote it to be like that.
“I know the women are treated poorly, but its set in an era when women weren’t respected” its an entirely fictional world, not a historical documentary. They didnt have to have it set up so women are treated poorly in that culture. That’s a decision they made.
Very curious doggo
Reminder that puffins are extremely social and like to fit in with their friends, so they will adopt mannerisms and interests of the group. So there is a good chance this little guy is trying to be friends with the photographer by showing his interest in the camera.
TIL photographers are a lot like puffins, cuz we also make friends by showing interest in your camera XD
Reminds me of the time researchers were trying to get puffins to land in a specific area so the put decoys up to draw them in but the decoys only had 1 leg and
this is so fucking cute

every woman on tumblr should have this on their dash
And every man
Look how nobody’s yelling or arguing or making things into a competition. Look how this is to straight up educate people through a different perspective. Look how effective that makes the message.
The last one really hit me. I never really thought about something like that could actually impact a woman’s life. Damn…
Every person.
The last one made me cry a bit
In my astrophysics classes we mentioned the TMT & I offhandedly asked my professor how pivotal that is to current astronomical research
He said something to the effect of "it'd be really cool but there are other projects that would probably supersede it within a decade or two"
That's whats at stake for Western science - a nifty addition expected to be at parity with projects already underway within one lifetime
As opposed to thousands of years of traditions & a fight against hundreds of years of colonization
What really irks me is the word “consider”. A peak they consider to be sacred.
Well they’re the native people of the region. So they don’t consider anything to be anything. If they say the peak is sacred, it is. There’s no grey area here.
