I love all the women in Slow Horses, of course. But Shirley is special to me. She gets to be just as fucked up and useless and bitchy as the men in this show. She's the only woman who feels like she was always going to end up in Slough House. Louisa and Catherine are both incredibly competent. They're both too damn nice, they both suffer incredibly from their proximity to the fuckass men in this show. Shirley is like if River was actually smart and addicted to crack and not blond and not a nepo baby. You've seen the "they're siblings your honor" posts, you know what I'm saying. She belongs in Slough House, a loose cannon, an asshole, an agent who's only really useful if you know how to use her. Maybe that's why Shirley and Marcus's friendship was so fucking special. They're foils, they're on equal footing, they're mean to each other and they're sick of each other's shit and they love each other with all their hearts and it wasn't enough. How could it have been? It wasn't enough to save Marcus, not from death, not even from his addiction. It wasn't enough to save Shirley, she's throwing herself into danger for Roddy fucking Ho for god's sake. This is Slough House, the power of friendship isn't going to do shit for you. It'll tear the people you love away from you until you're left an empty husk. It's happening to River. We're seeing it right now. But his is slow and agonizing. Shirley was thrown in the deep end. And now she's so fucked. Simultaneously keeping a distance from her coworkers and obsessing over their safety. God, I think if someone died now she'd lose it. Imagine that. I need to write that.
