It was Hack Week (more than just a day!) once again at Tumblr! A couple of times per year we grind everything to a halt and spend a week working on whatever we want and see how far we can get with our hacks. Since last time, we’ve launched the ability to have a Discord => Tumblr integration, we’re close to launching Twitch embed support, and custom logos are now possible in the mobile apps! And from a previous Hack Day, we’ve launched “Timestamps Everywhere” on web, and we’re working on rolling it out to the mobile apps very soon!

Here are some of the projects that got made for this last Hack Week. Some of these things you may also end up seeing on the site…

Interacting as a Sideblog/Secondary blog

@designpatternpirate put together a proof of concept for switching to a sideblog/secondary blog when liking or replying to posts. Using this hack, you’d be able to switch which of your blogs you’re “acting as” when hitting the like button or when replying to a post, to start. You’d even have separate Likes pages for each blog!

Moving Android notification settings

On Android, Omar moved all of our notification settings out of the Tumblr app and into the Android OS level notifications settings view, like other apps do:

@superchlorine hacked together a delightful button for the dashboard that summons crabs which scuttle across the page, and even comment on what they’re traipsing over:

A lot of very massive mostly negative effects on whole ecosystems, animal and plant species as well as the relationship between them. There are well over 110, 000 species of wasps much of which are pollinators, predators and display parasitism. 

Many species of wasps have very closely tied relationships with plants they pollinate, especially when it comes to their life cycle, often their life cycles evolved together. All these plants would die off without the wasps which in turn would effect other plant and animal species that relied on it for food or as an other resource. Wasps often pollinate a number of important native plants, as well as crops such as figs (more below), medicinal herbs and so on.  

We would lose many species of figs as there’s a whole superfamily of wasps called Chalcidoidea that pollinate fig species. Each fig can often only be pollinated by one or two very specific species of fig wasp and while many commercial figs use artificial parthenocarpy, dried figs require pollination by wasps and so do wild fig species. Figs are also a very important keystone fruit resource for animals in tropical regions across the globe, supporting the diet of well over 1,300 species of birds and mammals. Without wasps these figs would die and therefore have a pretty catastrophic impact on the tropical ecosystems that are already unstable thanks to humans.

As well as pollination wasps are also predators. This ecological role is considered one of the most important so they regulate arthropod populations making sure lower species of insects and plants aren’t getting over eaten by the arthropods they eat. Without them we’d see a massive increase in pest insect species like spiders, flies, mites, ants, centipedes and so on, therefore reducing the need for pesticides for our horticulture.

Like white folks became so dependant on the hundreds of years of labor that Native Americans put into domesticating these crops and now they’re so removed culturally from their origins that they’ve become inherant parts of white culture.

When you think of tomatoes do you think of Mexican, or Italian food? When you think of potatoes can you picture the Quechua or Ireland and the UK, Russia, France maybe? Does chocolate make you think of Belgian and Swiss truffles, or Olmec cacao?

Pumpkin may be the oldest domesticated plant but it doesn’t evoke images of the ancient Native peoples of the southern US. It’s white girls with pumpkin spice lattes and white mom’s pumpkin pie.

Seesaw is just the word “see” and it’s past tense “saw” mashed together. I would like to hearheard more words like that please. I drawdrew this to makemade that happen.
