regulus is the WORST when heโs drunk because suddenly heโs social. hugging people. complimenting people he openly hates. agreeing to every terrible idea immediately like โyeah obviously letโs steal that traffic cone.โ he gets weirdly affectionate too, like holding peopleโs faces and telling them they matter to him meanwhile everyone around him is just standing there in genuine horror because this is REGULUS
Summary: You tried to stop Vecna but you failed. Hawkins has split open and the only thing you managed to successfully do was save Eddie from near death. Now, you have to figure out what happens next.
TW: Blood, injury, mention of open wounds, alcohol use, drug use, MDNI, 18+
Word count: 1.5k
Authors note: This is part one of a three-part series. I will link the other parts as they are released.
The world felt as if it were falling apart. In fact, it was falling apart. Hawkins had cracked. A gaping hole tore through the town. Ash fell from the sky, snow-like but with a darkness to it. The town shook with earthquakes as buildings fell. Everything in that moment felt hopeless. Vecna had succeeded in opening the four gates.
You. You had failed.
โ
You stood just outside of the trailer you had crawled back through, seeing the town start to tear apart. Your eyes shifted up to the person beside you. Eddie. He was badly injured by some demobats, almost didnโt make it out, but you managed to stop the bleeding long enough to get him out of there.
โWeโฆwe didnโt make it. We didnโt stop him.โ You said in a whisper, your voice shaking as Eddie held an arm across his stomach. There was something about the intensity of the situation that almost made you forget this man, this man who had been your best friend since you were preschool-aged; this man almost died.
โ
Eddie finally looked down at you with the smallest bit of tears building up in his eyes. He had tried. He had tried so damn hard to protect this town. For some stupid reason, he was trying to save the town who ultimately hated him.
โ
โWhat now?โ Eddie asked in a whisper so soft you almost didnโt hear it. You glanced back at the crack. The upside down was now connected to the real world. You had no idea what would happen now. Whatever it was, it felt devastating. Horrendous. And final. Everything suddenly felt bleak and hopeless.
โ
โWe find everyone else,โ Dustin replied as he stood off to the side. He had returned to the trailer with you after Eddie had been injured. The three of you stood together, watching as the town you had grown up in was becoming something foreign and strange and terrifying.
โ
Dustin went to his house first to make sure his mom was okay, while you took Eddie into the trailer to fix him up. He was able to take exactly four steps into the home before he fell onto the couch with heavy breaths.
โ
โWe need to get these clothes off.โ You said as you helped him sit up a bit, pulling the jacket off before carefully pulling off his shirt. He lay back, wincing as you glanced over the cuts he had. Deep ones too. There were so many. You had made some makeshift bandages on a few with his bandana and the bottom half of your shirt. But they were both soaked now with blood.
โ
โIs it bad? Lie to me.โ Eddie said, that stupid sense of humor he had still seemed to work just fine. You felt the tiniest curl on the corner of your lip as you started to peel back the blood-soaked pieces of cloth.
โ
โBarely even a scratch. I think youโll be fully healed by tomorrow.โ You lied, trying to hide the obvious worry that was in your voice. You reached over for the nearest bottle of liquor that sat on the table, something his uncle had always left out. โThis is going to sting.โ
โ
You poured the bottle over the cuts, and Eddie screamed out in pain, along with a few curse words. You hated seeing him like this. You hated seeing the pain you had caused him. He threw his arm up across his forehead as he closed his eyes for a moment.
โ
โSorryโฆโ You whispered as you went to pour a little more. Eddie groaned some more, and his body writhed from the pain. You closed your eyes this time, squinting them as if that would make all of this go away. But it didnโt. Nothing would.
โ
You heard sirens in the distance as you dug through the medicine cabinet. Bottles and bottles and bottles of pills. You finally found painkillers along with some needle and thread. It was at least something that could hold offโฆfor now.
โ
โHere. Take these.โ You said, handing Eddie the pills. He didnโt even hesitate before popping them in his mouth and dry swallowing them. He let out a sigh as his body rested more into the couch.
โ
โYou didnโt have to do all this. You couldโve just left me there to die, you know?โ Eddie mumbled out as you started to carefully stitch him back together. He spoke through winces, though they seemed to be getting smaller as the medicine kicked in.
โ
โWhy on Earth would I leave you there to die?โ You asked with a concentrated tone. You pulled the thread back, watching as the skin slowly started to pull back together just a bit. Eddie let out the smallest little sigh, his head turning to the side so he could watch you.
โ
โBecause maybe thatโs what I was meant to do.โ He finally said, and the words alone made you stop what you were doing. You hated those words. Why would he ever be meant to die in the upside down? To you, it made no sense. To Eddie, it was the sacrifice he thought he had to make to protect this town.
โ
โYouโre delirious with pain. Stop talking.โ You finally said after a moment as you went back to cleaning him up. After getting all of the wounds cleaned and stitched, you placed some large bandages and wraps over them.
โ
โAm I clean and saved now?โ Eddie asked as you grabbed a blanket and tossed it over him. You sat on the floor beside the couch, tilting your head at him as you pulled your knees up to your chest.
โ
You and Eddie met as kids and immediately clicked. The two of you would ride tricycles together through the trailer park. You were nearly inseparable. Even when your mother remarried to an insurance salesman, and you moved to the suburbs, you still hung out every single day after school. Your friendship was unmatched.
โ
โHere to stay for another 30 years. Minimum.โ You teased softly as Eddie turned his head to let his dark eyes meet yours. The smallest smile crawled across his face as his color slowly started to return.
โ
โWoohoo.โ He said in the most sarcastic and quiet tone. You let out the tiniest laugh as you let your head tilt back just a bit. For a world that was falling apart, this moment felt like nothing but calm.
โ
The door opened, and Eddieโs uncle stumbled in. His eyes were wide as he seemed to be wanting to catch his breath. Eddie sat up a bit, a groan coming out from moving too quickly.
โ
โThank God youโre okay,โ Wayne said as he walked towards the two of you. He glanced down at Eddieโs injuries before looking at you. His eyes went between the two as he tried to take everything in.
โ
โAre you alright? What happened?โ He asked, and you quickly stumbled to your feet.
โ
Fuck. Think of something. Quick.
โ
โHeโs fine. Or, well, he will be. We were outside near the playground. It collapsed during the earthquake, and Eddie got hurt, but I helped him.โ You managed to say as Wayneโs eyes shot back to Eddie, who just nodded his head.
โ
โYeah. Exactly that.โ He said in agreement. Wayne nodded, letting out a breath he seemed to have been holding. He glanced around as the sirens started to get louder in the distance.
โ
โIโm going to go check on the neighbors. Stay here.โ He said, pointing to the two of us. Thankfully, Wayne was never really one for questioning us. He walked out of the trailer and left us alone inside.
โ
You stared for a moment longer before sitting back down beside Eddie. Your eyes went to his once more as he settled into the couch. He let his head roll to the side as his curls followed him. One thing you always liked: those damned curls.
โ
โYou donโt have to stay here all night, you know?โ Eddie said in that soft voice he only ever seemed to use when he was around you. You let out a small laugh, pulling your knees to your chest once more.
โ
โWhere else would I go? I mean, Hotel Munson is pretty hard to give up.โ You teased as Eddie let out the smallest laugh under his breath. You could tell his eyes were getting heavy, the adrenaline of everything starting to crash as his body relaxed from the pain medicine.
โ
โThen stay. At least until I fall asleep.โ He whispered as his eyes started to close. If you stayed until he fell asleep, youโd be gone in five minutes. You smiled just a bit as you reached up and pushed back one of his curls.
โ
โGoodnight, big hair.โ You whispered, teasing that nickname you had called him since he was just a small kid with a mop of curls on his head.
โ
You watched him for the rest of the night, or at least for most of it. You watched as he slept peacefully. Even if all of Hawkins was crumbling apart, piece by piece, your worldโฆyour moment in here was safe. It was whole. Because you had Eddie and, really, that was all you needed in this life. The road ahead was going to be longโฆcomplicated, but it was doable with Eddie by your side.

More Steve is coming soon I promise! <3 Works been kicking my ass recently and this is a crazy busy time of year for me. But I've got several fics in the works!
im the one who asked for steve smut thank uuuuu omgomgomg it was amazing and i need more ahhhhh
I'm so happy you liked it! I'll definitely be working on more soon <3 work is going to start getting crazier this time of year for me lol but I promise I'll have more out soon!
Warnings: angst, hurt/comfort, yearning, oblivious Steve, age gap, fluff, one sided love, slight cannon adjacent,
You hide behind your feelings for Steve, whoโs been a constant part of your life, convincing yourself thereโs no chance for reciprocation
If there was one trial life put you through, it was loving Steve Harrington. Even though it felt as natural as breathing, it also felt impossible sometimesโlike standing too close to the sun and pretending like the burn didnโt hurt. At first, Steve was a constant in your life, nothing more than the older boy who showed up when things went wrong, all teasing smiles and dramatic sighs as he drove you and the party from one disaster to the next.
But somewhere between growing up and growing attached, he became more than what everyone else saw him asโa brother, a babysitter, a protector. You saw him as Steve, someone who gave every part of himself without realizing how easy it was to fall in love with him.
You werenโt blind, you knew the history he had with the girl you could never measure yourself up to be, with Nancy. She was confidentโsure of herself and the women she wanted to be, and that hurt you more than anything. Because you knew in Steveโs mind you would always be the little sister he had to watch out for, the young and immature girl who always found herself in trouble. But you could give him so much more if you only had the chance.
The only person who knew of the crush you harbored on Steve was Robin, she had sniffed you out almost immediately. It was after the battle of Starcourt, you were sitting alone on the edge of a firetruck collecting your thoughts while your eyes instinctively drifted to him.
โYou like him, huh?โ You jumped in shock, turning to find Robin already beside you.
โI donโt know what youโre talking about.โ Your voice was more clipped than intended, refusing to meet her gaze.
โSure you doโI see the way you look at him. Like he hung the moon or something.โ Robin said, but there was no trace of judgement in her tone, like she related to it a little too well to simply be an observation.
You opened your mouth, but shut it, because there was no denying Steve affected you more than you care to admit. It was in the way your eyes searched for him in every room, how you deflated when you werenโt the center of his attention, or how you lit up when he smiled at you.
โIs it that obvious?โ You only asked.
Robin snorted, โto me? Extremely. But to dingus over there? Iโm surprised heโs still not clueless about the mall burning down.โ
And over half a year later, your feelings hadnโt dimmed one bit, if anything, they only burned brighter.
โโAnd Iโm really wondering if I wanna commit to a relationship with Tiffany? Sheโs great at certain stuff but sheโs really got her head up in the clouds, you know what I mean?โ Steve ranted during the drive to school, and you knew what he meant too well. You had learned to tune out his words when the conversation inevitably shifted to Steveโs one night stands, when he complained about nothing ever resulting in more.
Steve took his eyes off the road to once at you for a moment, noticing you had gone quiet. โHeyโhey, are you listening to me?โ He called out your name, snapping you out of your disassociation.
โWhat? Yeah yeah, I am Steve.โ You cleared your throat, straightening up in his passenger seat. You couldnโt help but inhale his scent as it filled your senses, his musky cologne mixing with the old leather from his car seats.
โYou okay?โ He raised a brow, turning more serious for a moment.
โMhm, why wouldnโt I be?โ You shrugged, and Steve nodded slowly, like your answer mattered more than he cared to admit.
โWell, what about youโthereโs gotta be some
guys at school who are into you?โ He didnโt turn to look at you this time, keeping his eyes fixed straight ahead.
You blinked, caught off guard by the question. โWhat?โ
He shrugged one shoulder, grip tightening slightly around the steering wheel. โI donโt know. Youโre like pretty and stuff, soโฆthereโs probably some high school idiot trying to ask you out.โ
Your heart stumbled awkwardly in your chest, juggling trying to wrap your mind around the fact Steve called you pretty, or questioning why he brought a topic up he almost never talked to you about.
โIโno,โ you rushed out quickly, fumbling over the words. โNot really.โ The car suddenly felt too cramped, too hot, but reaching over for the air conditioning would be a dead give away.
Steve paused for a second. โWhat, like thereโs no one?โ
You stared down at your hands, wishing you could open the door and fling yourself out before you say something you really shouldnโt. โNo. They donโt reallyโฆdo it for me, I guess.โ
Instantly, something unreadable flickered over his expression, close to relief.
โOh.โ He nodded once. โOkay, good.โ
The words slipped out so naturally that both of you froze, turning your face fully to stare at him widely.
Steve cleared his throat hard. โI-I mean not good, justโฆโ he grimaced at himself. โYou know, teenage boys donโt know how to treat a girl.โ
You couldnโt help but feel amused at his embarrassment, nodding slowly. โAnd you do?โ
โObviously.โ He said automatically before realizing what heโd said, face twitching further. โNot like thatโI just meantโโ
โItโs okay, Steve.โ You stopped him.
Though it didnโt prevent a strange silence from taking over the car. Not uncomfortable, but full, enough to be felt by the both of you.
Steve started tapping his fingers nervously against the steering wheel while you tried not to think too hard about the tone in his voice sounding close to jealousy. Neither of you said a word until the school parking lot came into view, the quiet between you feeling heavier than before.
You didnโt go looking for adventures, you swear it, they just seemed to constantly fall into your lap. The party was standing outside the edges of the woods, something about looking for something missing or a gateโyou couldnโt keep up anymore.
โOkay, we split up here.โ Dustin announced, pointing deeper into the woods with a flashlight that barely worked. โLucas and Max go left, me and Ericaโโ
While an argument started up about who was paired with who, Robin nudged your shoulder aggressively.
โGo with Steve.โ She whispered loudly.
Your stomach dropped. โWhat?โ
โNowโs your chance.โ She raised a brow knowingly. โTake. It.โ
You shook your head instantly, since that moment in the car you havenโt exactly been talking normally. โRobin, no. He probably wouldnโt want me there.โ You crossed your arms.
โYou cannot keep avoiding this forever.โ She groaned.
โIโm not avoiding anything.โ You whispered harshly, stealing a glance towards Steve who was standing a few feet away. โI just accepted the fact that nothing's ever gonna happen.โ
Robin contemplated for a moment, before sighing softly. โYouโre never gonna know that if you donโt try.โ
Before you could argue stubbornly, she shoved you forwards with enough force that you landed directly in front of Steve.
He blinked down at you. โโฆyou good?โ
You could only stutter, but Robin interrupted. โSheโs fine! Iโm going with Nancy, so try not to get yourselves killed.โ She answered for you brightly.
Steve looked between you in confusion while you glared daggers at the short haired girl before he shrugged. โGuess itโs us then.โ
The woods were quieter than usual, leaves crunched beneath the soles of your feet with every step, and every now and then your shoulder brushed Steveโs as you walked side by side, your chest tightening painfully.
Steve kept glancing at you cautiously while you tried to ignore the sharp tension every time his eyes landed on you.
Suddenly, a loud snap echoed from somewhere deeper in the woods. Before you could move, Steve was already reactingโhis arm flinging out to dart protectively over your chest, pushing you back on instinct alone.
Neither of you moved, Steve sucking in a sharp breath the moment he realized how close you were, his grip loosening slightly but never fully releasing.
โJesus,โ he muttered quietly, letting out a low laugh when nothing jumped out to attack either of you. โThought something was gonna come flying at us.โ
You laughed nervously too, trying to defuse the tensionโbut your heart was racing for an entirely different reason.
Steve rubbed the back of his neck. โSorry. Kinda got used to throwing myself in front of danger for you guys.โ
Maybe it was easier for him to lump you in with the whole group rather than acknowledge that he always seemed to reach for you first.
You swallowed thickly. โYou always protect everyoneโlike itโs your job.โ
Steve looked over at you, brows furrowing at your statement. โWellโฆyeah.โ
โThatโs just it.โ You said softly, keeping your gaze on the dirt beneath you.
He slowed enough to turn his concentration over to you. โWhat do you mean?โ
You bit the inside of your cheek before forcing your eyes up at him, if you were going to say it now you would say it with full confidence.
โI think thatโs why this hurts so much.โ
Steve stopped walking.
โYouโre always taking care of me.โ You continued shakily. โLooking out for meโand I know you donโt mean anything by it. But sometimes, you look at me so softly I start thinkingโฆโ you took a deep breath. โMaybe I imagined the whole thing wrong.โ
Steve didnโt look away from you, his expression still looking more clueless than ever. โImagined what wrong?โ
You stared at him, your eyes quickly getting closer to crying. โSteve.โ
His lips parted, repeating your name with the same urgency.
โThat Iโm in love with you.โ
It was a complete blow to him, he looked genuinely stunned. Nothing in the woods moved, nobody breathed, like the earth itself was waiting for his response.
โWhat?โ He breathed.
The tears already started falling, you shook your head immediately, already regretting it. The years you spent yearning, all added up to nothing. You wanted to forget the name Steve Harrington, though your heart never would.
โForget it. I shouldโve never said anything.โ You began walking away, feeling like you had been slapped in the face.
โNo.โ Steve loudly exclaimed, reaching out to grasp your wrist before you could leave. โWait.โ
You froze, both at the contact and his words. His eyes searched your face frantically, like he still couldnโt believe it, trying to piece something together that had been in front of him the whole time.
โAll this time?โ He said to himself, he already knew the answer, but needed to hear the confirmation.
You looked away, not being able to hear the expression in his face. โI know you donโt feel the same. Please, donโt hurt me any furtherโโ
โDonโt.โ He cut you off immediately.
Steve took a step closer, like what you had said physically pained him. โI could never hurt you.โ
You opened your mouth, but he continued before you could speak.
โI didnโt know.โ He admitted, almost ashamed. โI swear to god, I didnโt know.โ
Then he stared at you for a second too long after that, like he was seeing you differently for the first time.
Then much softer, like was about to utter a secret, his voice dropped. โI think Iโm the idiot here.โ
Your heart skipped, torn between staying and leaving before Steve could ruin you.
โYouโre always there.โ He started. โAlways laughing at my dumb jokes. Always the one believing in me when everyone else gives up.โ He sniffed, and you noticed the glaze that took over his brown eyes. โAnd I justโI donโt know when I stopped seeing you as the kid I had to keep safe and startedโฆโ
He trailed off, like the words escaped him.
Your pulse raced, needing to hear exactly what was going through his mind at the moment. โStarted what?โ
Steve looked at you while his chest heaved.
Then he kissed you.
Careful for only a second, like he had to remind himself to stop treating you like you were fragile before it turned deeper, more desperate, realizing this is what he was looking for.
Your back hit the tree behind you softly, but enough to shock you, letting out a little gasp as his hands found your waist, grounding himself there as your finger tangled into his messed up hair.
When he finally pulled away enough to allow you to breathe, both of you looked stunned. Steve rested his forehead against yours, breathing the same air as laughter escaped him.
Your voice came out smaller than intended, the terrifying thought that maybe he realized this was all a mistake enveloping you.
โYou donโt have to do this.โ
Steve pulled back enough to look at you properly, though his hands remained. โWhat?โ
โYou donโt have to force yourself to feel something for me.โ You whispered. โI know Iโm notโโ
โHey.โ His grip tightened gently, catching your gaze. โStop.โ
You swallowed past the nerves and the words began spilling out, years of insecurity finally cracking open. โSteve. You can have anyone, youโve had girls like Nancy. Girls that are smart and beautiful and older and canโโ
โAnd can what?โ He interrupted.
โThey can give you what you deserve. Iโm just me.โ
The look on Steveโs face nearly shattered your heart all over again. Hurt, like he couldnโt understand why you didnโt see yourself the way he suddenly did.
โYou think thatโs a bad thing?โ
You looked away, silently answering while he sighed before lifting a hand to tilt your chin back, towards him, gently stroking the skin.
โI spent so long chasing after people who made me feel like I had to earn being loved.โ He admitted. โBut youโฆโ he shook his head,
โYouโve looked at me like I was enough since the day we met.โ
You smiled weakly, Steve had always been more than enough to you.
โYou wanna know why Iโm always protecting you?โ He asked. โBecause I canโt stand the thought of losing you compared to the rest of them.โ He jerked his head.
โBecause losing you would feel like losing a part of myself. And youโre everything Iโve ever needed.โ
You sucked in a sharp breath, the words hit you harder than the kiss, you realized in that moment you had never been Steveโs โsister,โ you had been his person.
Steve seemed to figure out your thoughts as a new wave of tears flooded you. โOh sweetheart, cโmere.โ He opened up his arms, and you didnโt need another word, before burying yourself into his chest.
He kissed you again, and it wasnโt desperate or shocked, it was certain.
You reunited with the party again walking hand in hand with Steve, and while they seemed clueless to the new arrangement, Robin smiled widely.

hiii i binged like all of ur writing i love it sm omg can i request a reader x steve smut story bc i need it like frfr plssss and thank uuuuu
OMG ANON THANK-YOU! I could cry this was so sweet! I'll work on a full Steve smut story...but for now, enjoy.
"You drive me insane." Steve husked against your neck as his lips pressed harder to the skin. What started as a kiss has quickly turned into an intense make-out. The kisses into your neck were turning into bites, something you would see the results of tomorrow morning.
"I can do more than just drive you insane, Harrington." You grumbled back as you let out soft moans. His hands roamed under your shirt and went straight for your breasts. The firm grip, the squeeze. It was enough to send a heat through your entire body.
Your shirt was swiftly pulled off of you with what seemed like one hand motion. Steve Harrington definitely knew what he was doing. You let out another moan as Steve's hands moved to your hips, quickly picking you up and carrying you until your back slammed against the wall. You let your nails dig into his bare back, his shirt off well before yours.
Steve pulled back from the kiss just for a moment as he was now eye-level with you. You both let out heavy breaths, feeling the heat around you as Steve leaned in and pressed his forehead to yours, "Prove it."
Those two words were all you needed. You unwrapped your legs and Steve let you fall from the wall. You kissed his neck. His collarbone. His pecs. His chest. His abdomen. You trailed your kisses until you were on your knees with your hands going for his zipper.
"Whatever you want, Harrington." You whispered in that oh so seductive voice of yours. Steve's pants pulled down easily as his length popped directly to your face. You grabbed the base, keeping your eyes on his as you ran your tongue all down the side of it. Steve let out a long and deep groan. He was in pleasure before the show even started.
You let your lips finally wrap around the head before sliding down the entire length. As he hit the back of your throat, tears started to swell in your eyes and stream down your cheeks. Steve's hand went to the back of your head as he pushed you further.
"You're right. You're doing way more than driving me insane." He growled as he started to throat fuck you harder, rougher. You went until his seed was falling down your throat, coating the soreness you felt. The second the two of you were done, Steven immediately switched to the most kind and considerate man. As the two of you lay in bed together, he reached up and brushed your hair back before letting out the softest whisper.
"You really do drive me insane you know? In the best way possible."

Summary: Steve is running a late night conversation section at the radio station and you happen to be the one phone call he waits for the most.
TW: chars 18+, mdni
Word count: 1.3k
Steve Harrington had been working at the radio station for over a year now. Honestly, it was probably the longest he had held a job. But now that things in Hawkins seemed to be calm for good, it seemed easier to handle something so simple once more.
โ
โOkay, Harrington, Iโm out. Please donโt turn on the switchboard again. Remember, this is the night shift. No one wants to hear whooping at three in the morning.โ Robin said as she gathered her stuff to head out. Steve, who had the headphones on but hanging off one ear, glanced back at her.
โ
โDebatable, Robin!โ He shouted as she walked out of the studio. The door shut, and suddenly Steve was alone once more. The night shift. Thatโs what he had been working on at the station. Considering everything Steve had gone through, it was hard for him to just shut off his mind and sleep at night, so this seemed like a great solution.
โ
Steve played a few songs, flipping through a comic book Robin had left behind before he glanced at the clock. Twenty more minutes. Twenty more minutes and he would start what he called the Steve Says section. It was made for people like him, those who couldnโt sleep at night and just needed someone to talk to.
โ
You were one of those people.
โ
You sat in your bed, letting out a small sigh as you glanced over at the clock on your nightstand. Twenty more minutes. Twenty more minutes and you could make that phone call. It had become a nightly routine at this point. You would call into the station and talk to Steve. Steve didnโt know who you were, not really. But you knew him.
โ
You went to school with him. And while you watched him go from girl to girl and fawn over Nancy, a girl you admired, you couldnโt help but wonder if Steve would ever notice you. You had hoped one day, but he always seemed soโฆdistracted.
โ
โHey there, Hawkins. Itโs two a.m., and you know what that means? Itโs time for Steve Says. If youโre like me and you just canโt seem to fall asleep, then go ahead and pick up that phone. Iโll be here for the next few hours offering bad advice, worse opinions, and whatever your little heart wants to discuss. Little side note to management: giving me this microphone was probably a terrible idea, but hey, the chicks love it, right?โ Steve said over the radio, and you immediately popped up.
โ
You reached for the phone, feeling the cord drape over your legs as you quickly dialed the number you knew by heart now. Your heart raced as you held it up to your ear, waiting to hear that sound. The sound you had grown to love so dearly. The sound of the phone ringing meant you were next. As you waited and waitedโฆyou heard it. The damn busy signal.
โ
โDamnit.โ You muttered under your breath as you pushed down on the receiver to hang up before quickly dialing the number again.
โ
โAnd that was drunken Dan. You know what? Letโs give it up for drunken Dan. He actually managed to dial the right number tonight.โ Steve said over the radio after ending a call with someone else.
โ
You held the phone to your ear, and while you were waiting for the ring, Steve was sitting in the station waiting for a call. Just one single call from someone.
โ
โHello there, night owl, and welcome to Steve Says. Who am I talking to?โ His voice called out over the phone, and you felt your heart race. You pulled your knees to your chest as your smile grew a bit.
โ
โHi Steve.โ You said simply. Just two words. Two simple words, and Steveโs mind started to spin. He knew who it was. He knew exactly who it was. His own smile danced onto his face as he leaned a bit closer to the microphone.
โ
โHey there, stranger. I was wondering if you would call tonight.โ He spoke in a softer tone, as if the conversation was suddenly intimate. And considering it was two in the morning, it probably was.
โ
โI call every night.โ You spoke back just as softly. Steve rested one elbow on the table as his head went into his hand. But that smile. That smile never left his face. Not as long as you were on the phone with him.
โ
โThat you do. And you know what? Itโs probably my favorite call of every night.โ He said calmly. The second those words came out over the phone, you felt your heart beating hard against your chest.
โ
Steve Harrington. Smooth. Charming. And talking to you?
โ
โYou know, itโs suddenly come to my attention that youโve never actually given your name,โ Steve spoke, and you twirled the cord of the phone around your finger.
โ
โWhy do you want to know my name?โ You asked as Steve sat up in the seat a bit. His brow raised as he let his tongue poke the inside of his cheek.
โ
โWell, how can I properly ask you out one day if I donโt know your name?โ He finally said, and you froze. Sure, conversations with Steve had always been flirty. But this? This felt different. This felt like he genuinely wanted to meet you. Take you out. As if he were actually interested in you.
โ
โYou know me, Steve.โ You finally said, and there seemed to be a long pause on the other end. Steve was doing something he was constantly told not to do. Never allow dead air on the radio.
โ
You felt as if you were holding your breath. It was a bold statement you had just made. Perhaps a stupid one. What if Steve didnโt know you? What if you just made yourself look like an idiot? You started to second-guess your statement when Steve suddenly cleared his throat.
โ
โUh, folks, weโll be right back with Steve Says, but in the meantime, enjoy the very soothing sounds of George Michael,โ Steve said before suddenly music started to play over the radio.
โ
You kept the phone up to your ear, the cord still twisted around your finger as your knees pulled tighter to your chest. Had Steve hung up? Was he about to tell you to stop calling again? You waited, wondering when suddenly he came back.
โSorry about that, I didnโt think the people of Hawkins wanted to keep listening to our obviously intimate conversation. But youโre right. I do know you.โ Steve finally said, and you felt as if that breath you were holding was finally starting to release.
โ
โYouโฆyou do?โ You asked through a small breath. Steve was smiling on the other end of the line, a big dorky smile at that.
โ
โI do. I see you around town. If Iโm honest, Iโve been watching you since High school.โ He finally admitted, and you sat up a bit more. High school. So Steve did know you. He knew you really well, apparently.
โ
โWhy didnโt you say anything?โ You asked, and Steve ran a hand through his infamous locks. He let out a sigh before pressing his hand against the desk.
โ
โHonestly? I thought you thought I was an idiot.โ Steve said, and you let out a small giggle. He followed your giggle with a laugh of your own as you shook your head.
โ
โYou are an idiot, Steve Harrington.โ You managed to squeak out as George Michael continued to play on the radio near you.
โ
The two of you spent the next few hours talking. And when morning came, and Steve was off work, he didnโt go home. No. He went to your house. Because he did know you. And you were more than eager to let him know all of you the second he walked in that door.
