oh this was something I forgot to ever say in my liveblog cause I wanted to wait to see if it was brought up again and it wasn't. I think that susie's discomfort over how ralsei talked about orange is at least in part because "humans don't have tails" is something susie heard a lot in the places she used to live. having her monsterous features made fun of, used as a point of exclusion. just as kris knows they will never be a monster, susie is likely very present of mind that she will never be a human
...if I'm being honest I did not realize people took jongler being referred to as 'they' once so seriously. I kind of thought we were all on the same page of 'well, they're a mike, so of course they're gonna have he/him used for them eventually cause mike uses he/him, but it's a fun headcanon to have anyway' but apparently a lot of people were actually very convinced that they were intended to be canonically nonbinary

i'd love to hear your thoughts on the confirmation that there IS some level of heteronormativity in hometown!! they're fine with having two festival kings or queens, but it's still king and queen by default. (rudy saying maybe it'll be two queens this year also implies that's not the norm)
noelle also has a line while on the ferris wheel with kris where she mentions that as kids when she and kris were voting for themselves, they couldn't agree on who should be king and queen, which is the first mention of kris being unable to fit within traditional gender roles. while hometown obviously respects kris's identity as a nonbinary person, they still have traditions which enforce strict male and female gendered roles and heteronormativity.
(im working on a video about gender in chapter 5 as a whole since there is SO MUCH to talk about, so if you have any other thoughts on the subject i'd love to hear thwm since in my mind ur kinda the og Gender In Deltarune person)

hometown strikes me as a very like, northeast liberal small town (which is exactly the kind of town i grew up in). you'll get things like unisex bathrooms, teachers have to use the correct pronouns for trans students, and you might even have two prom queens. it's just about as good as it could be... but that's still all built upon the foundation of heteronormativity and sexism, because everything in the world as we know it started that way and you cant get rid of it without first destroying the very structure of our society. and as inclusive as you try to be, things slip through the cracks (such as not having a gender-neutral term for king/queen) and any changes/additions are known to be out of the ordinary in some way. everyone's polite about it, everyone's accepting of it, but they all know that it's different.
the story about kris and noelle as kids is intriguing. they were trying to enter something that was by that point a family legacy, but it was impossible. it's true they were never going to win primarily because they were just little kids, but metaphorically they were never going to win because there was never a space made for kris in the first place. there's a way things were supposed to be- asgore and toriel, asriel and dess, kris and noelle. or not. nobody is mad at kris for not fitting into a space, but they havent changed or expanded that space to allow kris a spot either. that puts the burden on kris, or anyone else who doesnt feel comfortable being King or Queen, to ask for that change and bring attention to themselves and their own otherness. but it's easier to just suck it up and label yourself as one thing or another, right? it's only a stupid game. it's only for one night. you can make yourself fit for a few more minutes

i can see this very easily, in fact i think it might be more likely than ralsei just being a girl only. with ralsei's pronouns switching to they/them in the power menu, and the line "ive been a prince for a while, but i havent been a princess yet! i suppose the only difference is how you present yourself... but, it's fun to try new things, isnt it?", im thinking ralsei being bigender or genderfluid is a big possibility (if whatever ralsei decides to be even has a strict label like that at all). imo any pronouns are on the table right now (but i'll probably stick to she or they, personally).
(also on my mind though, ive known several people in my personal life who experimented with using they/them for a while before fully switching to the other binary gender. from what i understand that's fairly common. some of those people also later decided that they wanted to return to identifying as nonbinary in some respect. it could keep changing through a person's entire life, depending. maybe ralsei still wont have a clear answer by the end of the game)

#I wasn't expecting to enjoy genderfluid ralsei as much as i do by the end of chapter five #specifically because nonbinary headcanons of trans coded characters often feels like people choosing The Safe Option #so they can still be a Little bit of their assigned gender !! so I can still Call them a boy/girl while acknowledging their transness! #and its like well you're not engaging with what that (my!!) identity means for them. you just want to have your cake and eat it too. #but like. i find myself fucking with this. #ralsei still operates under a very Direct storybook worldview. if shes not a prince then Obviously she must be a princess. Simple! #thats the Girl Version! #but its Not that simple for her its Not that one to one. #its not just confronting the fact that shes Not the prince but that she can be More Than It. that they are not what the rules imply. #the restrictiveness of roles.you can only be what you're meant to. #they liked the butler outfit in chapter two! they like parts of being a prince! ...in a feminine nonconforming way!#I can very easily see ralsei finally accepting himself. and ending up doing a 180 into whats Right For Girls. #maybe i liked being a little bit of a prince. maybe i liked wearing that suit. maybe its...very context based. #does that make me less of a girl?? does that make me a liar?? if im functionally the same why would I ever choose to change? #im not...Sad. like this. im not miserable.
