Slightly Shifty

Having someone hold them still as they drill/saw a chain off.

Untying them gently to reveal bad bruises and cuts from weeks of fighting.

Whumpee staying still until the second their restrains come off.

Restrains that are actively hurting them.

Rescuers know the restraints are the only thing keeping everyone safe, so they leave them on until sedation kicks in, or whumpee collapses from exhaustion.

Having to move them from chains right on in strapping them down on a gurney.

Whumpee pulling themselves to the end of their chain to keep distance from the strangers in uniform.

whumpee who has to be dragged out of a hiding spot by the chain.

Whumpee who cries with relief and fear when they remove the restraints

Whumpee who begs the kind strangers not to hurt them.

Whumpee who screams because being untied/released hurts.

Whumpees convinced that restraints mean safety begging rescuers to let them be good ("Please- please I'll be good please don't please-")

"Thank you for everything."

"Why does it sound like you're saying goodbye?"

"It's okay, I've been through worse."

"This is concerning."

"Why? You also have a wanted poster."

Redemption by amnesia - the villain forgetting their crimes. They begin living a normal life, or possibly even forge a new path of virtue. They don’t even understand why the heroes keep so close to them, why everyone gives them dirty looks. Or maybe they were told their past and have to live with a guilt they can’t quite fully feel.

Redemption by empathetic experience - maybe the villain was young when they started down the wrong path. They learned the worst from evil mentors/parents, and it isn’t until they have an experience that shatters their paradigm that they realize they can/should be different. Usually these experiences humanize the people around the villain, and villain, feeling empathy, decides to change.

Redemption by de-aging - the villain reverting back to a younger age. Even if they remember what they’ve done, the heroes would likely refuse to kill them. And the younger they are, the less likely they’d face any punishment.

Redemption by whump - the villain facing unbalanced retribution. Their torture is too much for the heroes to bear. “They don’t deserve this.” The villain being taken care of in a way that changes their whole relationship with the heroes. They can’t go back to living the way they did before.

Redemption by “death” - the villain being sentenced to death and actually dying. By some means, magical or scientific, they come back to life. They technically satisfied the sentence and can carry on living, however that may go. Or it was done in secret, and they get a second chance living in anonymity.

Redemption by common enemy - “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The villain and hero team up to stop a bigger, worse threat. Even though villain has done terrible things in the past, the hero can’t kill or hurt them now, not right after they helped.

Redemption by family - nothing is more humanizing than a villain that cares about their family (and vice versa), and the hero can’t let villain die while their child is watching. Also looks like a brother, a mother stepping in when villain needs them most. Advocating for them, believing in them when no one else would.

But Jaskier isn’t stupid, and so he carries around a very potent poison that can kill him almost instantly, and from experience has been proven to only leave him dead for around fifteen minutes. Because he does travel alone sometimes, and it’s better to kill himself in the middle of nowhere than to risk getting robbed when he’s sick, injured, etc.

Even though he can do it though, he’s not a big fan of it, and prefers to just ride out the pain/sickness with Geralt when possible. Because, okay, dying HURTS, and he’s never been able to find a poison that works rapidly and doesn’t make it feel like he’s being boiled alive, his heart thudding painfully in his chest until it just…gives out.

(Plus, he secretly likes the way Geralt will give him his cloak, and make him tea, and gently check his wounds. The witcher doesn’t exactly fuss, but he does let him ride Roach sometimes when he’s particularly unwell, with the witcher sitting behind him in the saddle and making sure he doesn’t fall off as he dozes.)

But then the mountain happens. And Jaskier is traveling with Geralt again, sure, but now he knows how he actually feels about traveling with a “human”. So even though Jaskier would prefer to just power through the nasty head cold he feels coming on, he digs in the bottom of his pack for the poison as soon as Geralt leaves to hunt. Because he can’t give the witcher yet another reason to leave him, not when the fix is so easy, not when Geralt clearly already wants as little contact, physical or otherwise, with him as possible.

He downs the vial, the familiar spasms taking over him almost instantly, and is about to let his eyes fall shut when he hears Geralt returning far too soon. A Geralt who does not know about Jaskier’s regeneration ability.

But the bard’s mouth has already stopped working, he can’t even lift his head, and the last thing he thinks before he’s gone is that Geralt looked a lot more…concerned? Than he thought he would.

And when Jaskier wakes up in Geralt’s arms, and explains everything, the bard is more than a little confused at the witcher’s insistence that he never kill himself again, at least when traveling with Geralt. The bard tries to argue that sometimes it’s necessary, but agrees to not do it unless it’s an emergency at the wild look in the man’s golden eyes.

Jaskier is still a little worried when he starts to feel another cold coming on two months later, but instead of Geralt leaving him like he feared, the man becomes a verifiable mother hen, refusing to leave the bard alone for even a second. And if Jaskier notes the way all weapons are kept far out of his reach, and the dagger he usually hides in his boot goes missing, well.
