Kolkata.
I’ve loved you secretly and shamelessly. I’ve lost and found myself in your contorted lanes and dreamy broken paths that lead nowhere. I’ve woken up to your springs, warmed myself in your mellow glows and cried myself to sleep in winters. You’re this ballad I find myself chanting in despondence and hope. I have lived in other places but I have only truly been alive with you, here. You smell like my childhood and you come in waves fondly rustling my hair and stroking my skin. You’ve seen me unrestrained and bold and you’ve also seen me timid and quiet. There are places I avoid going to and if and when I pass by I feel the hatred in my gut and there are places within you I can never get enough of. I have disliked you, yes I have. I was the prodigal son and you had your arms wide open to welcome a weary traveler home. You’ve made me who I am and for that, I am grateful.
Sunsets have played a major role in my life. Whenever I’ve felt the need to decompress, I’ve gone up to my terrace and imbibed in nice, warm, hues of orange or pink sunsets to feel better. Gazing at the skies have made my problems seem insignificant albeit for a short while but the feeling lingers.
I’m a writer…theoretically. But I don’t have the spark inside me it seems. Without being egotistical I know on a technical level I’m a very good writer and I like writing - but it seems like I’ve been stuck in a rut for years (I’m 23 so …it’s been a long time) with no ideas or creative juices. So many authors talk about having a story inside of them that they want to write but I feel like a barren landscape of ideas - there’s nothing! And when I do sit down and try to flesh things out into actual plot and characters, it seems to suck any of the creativity away and it becomes lacklustre. Did you go through periods of your life where writing was this hard? I want to write…but I feel like I have nothing to write. It frustrates me to know I’m wasting my talent
You’re 23. Right now you’re gathering the material and the life experience that will give you things to write about in the future. You’re finding out what you have to say in order to say it.
There’s a reason why most writers aren’t published at 23, and it’s not because their books are rejected. It’s because they don’t have anything important to say, yet. Their lives are composting down and the stories that will grow on those compost heaps are often still only green shoots.
Don’t worry. Read a lot. Experience life a lot. Get fired. Work in some weird jobs. Get your heart broken. Discover what you have to say.
This NPR interview with with Angela Saini about how race science never really left the global scientific consciousness is super interesting! I’m gonna read her book!

I feel like I am cheating on paperbacks with e-books but one cannot deny the convenience. 🤐 𝓣𝓱𝓮𝓷 𝓢𝓱𝓮 𝓦𝓪𝓼 𝓖𝓸𝓷𝓮 - 𝓛𝓲𝓼𝓪 𝓙𝓮𝔀𝓮𝓵𝓵 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼 The synopsis of the book will more or less tell you that this book is about a missing girl Ellie and years later, the mystery that surrounds her mother’s new boyfriend, Floyd. But what it won’t tell you is that inspite of being quite the page turner the storyline is far from solid. I mean there are instances that will keep you at the edge of your seat but it is indeed quite surprising how flawed the entire investigation surrounding Ellie was. At one point, it almost looked as if her entire disappearance was made to look convenient by the police. Even though I like fast paced novels and this is one of them, I was really hoping for something logical that would explain a lot of questions that are bound to creep up as you proceed. Now, would I recommend this book? Well, one can say that we see a lot of unexplained events in movies so why not give the same leeway to a book? And that’s reason enough for someone to go ahead and read this but do be prepared for if not a lot but a tad bit of disappointment. #bookstagram #books #booksofinstagram #booksofig #thrillerbooks #thriller #suspensebooks #suspense #thenshewasgone #lisajewell #bibliophile #bookphotography #bookaesthetics #bookaesthetic #bookishglee #bookishladiesclub #bookrecommendation #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreviewer #bookreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CSem5SkJlrm/?utm_medium=tumblr
Fallen Leaves~Andeline Yen Mah For a while now, I’ve really felt driven to read a lot of books that would grant me some sort of insight into South-east Asian countries, their cultures, lifestyles and people in general. Fallen Leaves is about the struggles of a young woman, Adeline Yen Mah, from China during the civil war and the constant humiliation and rejection she faced at the hands of her own family members. Even when she moved to the US for her education in medicine hoping to have a better life there she was faced with a failed marriage and a lot of other hardships. Adeline had hoped that her incessant efforts would one day please her father and step mother and make them proud but even a successful career and a nice home weren’t enough. She never gave up and at some point realised that maybe life isn’t about what you do to make others happy but more about being content with whatever you make of it. She had a tough childhood and was severely neglected but she rose above the hardships and inspired everyone around her. I felt a lot of sympathy for the protagonist and almost felt my blood boil after I read about the harsh treatment that was meted out to her on a daily basis. Overall, yes it was a good read if not casual. Happy Reading, bookworms!!📚☺️ #bookreviewer #bookstagram #books #bookishladiesclub #bookishlove #bibliophile #bibliophilelife #booknerd #booklover #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookishpost #bookphotography #bookpost #paperbackbooks #paperbackparadise #booksreviewsandmore https://www.instagram.com/p/CHpyQAch0Q_/?utm_medium=tumblr
The Pagoda Tree ~ Claire Scobie 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺 It took me a while to settle in and find out the genre I relate to the most. Turns out, it’s historical fiction (now can you blame me for being such an old soul😂). Set in the 18th century of the East India Company Rule, in the southern part of India( Tanjore), the devadasis were an elite group of dancers who were thoroughly trained to perform and please the Gods. Maya is one such girl who’s destined to become a devdasi(literally translating it would mean “servant to God”. Devdasis were trained dancers who performed to please the Gods.) since her mother was one. This book revolves around her and the journey she embarks on as the British ruthlessly tear through her life and place of birth. Ironically enough, she falls for a British soldier knowing deep in her heart that it’ll only bring her more sorrow. But I guess, love does have the power to cajole us into taking the most unexpected decisions. All in all, I’d say it is a delightful and heartbreaking read at the same time. #bookstagram #booklover #booksreview #bookrecommendations #bookloversofinstagram #bookphotography #bookpictures #bibliophile #bibliophilelife #bibliophilesofinstagram #bookishglee #bookishlove #photo #aesthetic #aestheticphotography #bookloverslife #books #bookpictures #thepagodatree https://www.instagram.com/p/CI8X0VvJOE1/?utm_medium=tumblr
One of the many stupid feelings humans are capable of having is the private, repulsive rage of seeing someone getting support and sympathy for a problem no one helped you with when you were having it, either because you didn’t have anyone or because it never occurred to you that you could ask for help. Suddenly the world seems to split into two – the realm that contains people like them, the connected and loved – and the realm that contains you, the miserable and the alone, who must suffer in solitude. This is sufficiently horrible that you grasp for reasons or world-understandings to make this reality acceptable, and a mentally available one is that it is superior to be in the miserable solitude realm, that the problem is one that should be solved with self sufficiency and dignity. That this other person is pathetic for being aided and loved when you were not. Scorn is more palatable than confronting the notion that you could have received aid (if you had made different choices or been luckier), that you desperately wish you could have been aided but were not. Scorn is more palatable than the howling hunger for things to have been different for you. So your mind chooses scorn.
It is also a bad place to be. Human existence is full of such traps.
This had to be on my wall ❤️

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ~ Taylor Jenkins “People think intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth.” I have lost count of the number of times I have used this quote from the book. It hits a chord somewhere about how often we mistake a shallow connection for intimacy only because we don’t know what intimacy actually feels like and how rare it is to come across it in a world like today. When Hollywood sensation Evelyn Hugo finally agrees for an interview, she recounts her experiences in the industry and finally answers the questions about her scandalous marriages with seven men. But the real question still remains “Who was the true love of her life?” This book is a peek into the glamorous yet treacherous world of Hollywood and how someone has to water down parts of themselves to be able to “fit-into” something bigger. This book remains with the reader long after it is over. #bookstagram #books #bookshelf #bookporn #thesevenhusbandsofevelynhugo #taylorjenkinsreid #goodreads #bookloversofinstagram #bibliophile #bookquotes #bookquoteoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CSbQqZTJ-ty/?utm_medium=tumblr
call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
Reminder that in international (and usually national too) womens athletics anybody with 5m/mol of natural testosterone or higher is disqualified. (See legal case of Dutee Chand vs IAAF.)
Do you or somebody you know have PCOS? You are banned from international womens athletics because you are supposedly in posession of an unreasonable advantage in sports.
Folks disqualified for hyper-androgenism in womens athletics.
Francine Niyonsaba
Caster Semenya
Dutee Chand
Margaret Wambui
And more
-
Why are those disqualified overwhelmingly black and brown? Because testing is case by case when an athletes performance “raises suspicions”. They overwhelmingly test athletes of colour, for being too fast and not meeting white expectations of femininity.
Racism and intersexism(discrimination against intersex people) in sports is abject evil. Desegregate sports.
bringing this back in light of the blatant racism and misogynoir in the olympics
Bookshelf inserts
hey say that you can’t judge a book by its cover. But what if the cover alone can tell you the whole story? Welcome to the world of book nooks where creativity runs wild!
These hand-made creations will draw you into tiny places of wonder: from the hobbit hole to the Blade Runner-inspired apocalyptic alley or Lord of the Rings-themed door replica equipped with motion sensors.
This book nook my mother got on Ebay
A Magical bookshop in your own bookshelf
I made a booknook for a christmas gift, my inspiration was Blade Runner. It’s 11" X 6"
Not only are book nook inserts a fun way to train your creativity muscle, they can also be a solution to making reading great again. A recent study done by Pew Research Center showed that a staggering quarter of American adults don’t read books in any shape or form. The same study suggested that the likelihood of reading was directly linked to wealth and educational level. Add high levels of modern insomnia and full-time employment that leaves many of us drained at the end of the day, and the idea of opening a book seems unappealing, to say the least.
Now imagine yourself walking past a bookshelf full of these mini worlds—the dioramas of an alley. They catch your attention and you cannot help but see what’s inside. The pioneer of the book nook concept is the Japanese artist Monde. Monde introduced his creations to the Design Festa in 2018 and received overwhelming feedback. 178K likes on twitter later, Monde has become an inspiration to the aspiring arts and crafts lovers who join on r/booknooks to share their spectacular ideas.

If Earth had Saturn’s Rings
From an excellent post by Jason Davis
From Washington, D.C., the rings would only fill a portion of the sky, but appear striking nonetheless. Here, we see them at sunrise.
From Guatemala, only 14 degrees above the equator, the rings would begin to stretch across the horizon. Their reflected light would make the moon much brighter.
From Earth’s equator, Saturn’s rings would be viewed edge-on, appearing as a thin, bright line bisecting the sky.
At the March and September equinoxes, the Sun would be positioned directly over the rings, casting a dramatic shadow at the equator.
At midnight at the Tropic of Capricorn, which sits at 23 degrees south latitude, the Earth casts a shadow over the middle of the rings, while the outer portions remain lit.

I didn’t know I wanted earth to have rings but now I know and am sad
