You know what, I didn't get Haruta's actions in episode 40.
No, I get why he attacked Megumi. He's evil and all that.
But... look, I don't know about the rest of you folks but after Nanami disrespects me the way he disrespected Haruta (AS HE SHOULD HAVE), my ass would have went home. I am calling it a day, and fucking leaving! Go rethink my life choices!
He was lucky to survive that beat down and what his dumb ass do?
Go and do the same thing your ass just got beat down for!! And now he's in a situation where he's scared again!
See that's why I can't wait to see what he has coming for him in the next episode.
Should have gone home with that L to live another day, but nooooo.
Because a huge part of Haruta's character is that he has impulse control issues, little-to-no ability to think beyond the immediate moment, and doesn't seem able to learn from past mistakes. He's all about acting on what's gratifying to him in the present even if it comes back to bite him in the end. Reckless hedonism, if you will.
We saw that aspect of him all the way back in the Exchange Event arc, when he tried to attack an injured Hanami. At no point did he consider the ramifications of his actions - that Jogo, Mahito and Dagon would be PISSED with him (and almost definitely kill him for it). He just saw an opportunity to torture and murder someone weaker than him, so he took it, no thoughts at all beyond that.
It was probably the same with Megumi in Shibuya. Maybe Haruta WAS retreating, or trying to lay low, but then he came across this injured, lone teenager, and he couldn't resist the opportunity.
