You dont have to ship johnshi thats completely fine.
But to go out of your way and twist their story in my comment section to reduce their dynamic is ehh. Low. So anyways heres a list of everything they've done for another and their playful dynamic
I dont need to explain the obvious and the fact that Kenshi pushed Johnny aside and risked his own life for the sake of saving him. Relationships don't start and stop at the moment a favor is done. Calling this a "one sided incident" I feel like robs them out of their character. That event was the catalyst, not the entire foundation. Kenshi risking his life was the wake up call that shattered Johnny's superficial worldview, but everything that came after that moment is what actually built their dynamic.
Kenshi saving Johnny proved to Johnny that people in this new world were willing to die for each other. Ive seen a claim saying Kenshi was "forced into the role with Johnny." That completely robs Kenshi of his own agency as a character.
Kenshi is a proud, fierce warrior who doesn't accept pity. If Kenshi felt manipulated or forced, he would have taken Sento and cut Johnny out of his life immediately. Yet, Kenshi chooses to trust Johnny, jokes with him, and invites him along to fight the Yakuza because Johnny proved through months of consistent, daily actions that his care was genuine.
If Johnny was just acting out of surface level guilt, he would have handed over Sento, say "thanks" and go back to his mansion in LA. Instead, he completely altered the trajectory of his life, career, and finances to stick by Kenshi's side for the long haul.
Literally every great relationship in fiction, romantic or whatever starts with a major life altering event. Characters bonding over shared survival (do not mix this up with trauma bonding), mutual salvation, or a life or death moment is one of the oldest storytelling traditions. Calling it "meaningless plot development" means you just dont understand basic narrative structure.
I was told that Johnny kidnapped Kenshi and exploited him.....? Johnny didnt kidnap Kenshi... Kenshi broke into Johnny's house at night to steal Sento. That's Johnny restraining a home intruder, not rlly kidnapping.
This isnt to deny that Johnny was an arrogant insensitive jerk at the start who mocked Kenshi's clan and tried educating him on his own family's past. Nobody is denying that. That is exactly why its called a character arc. He starts at the bottom and grows. Johnnyβs care for Kenshi lasts the entire game and beyond. Throughout the Outworld chapters, Johnny is constantly guiding Kenshi so he doesn't stumble, shows his gratitude, refuses to leave him behind, gives up Sento (which to be fair I have mixed opinions on. It was 3M dollars and he did buy it legally, but also, it belongs to Kenshis family, technically it belongs to Kenshi already and he shouldve given it long ago. Hate cage for that.)
Plus Johnny's care for him goes way past the main story. In match intros and endings, Johnny tells Kenshi hes found a specialist in Geneva that could repair his eyesight, PAYS for all his massive medical bills, and literally risks his life fighting the Yakuza to help Kenshi free his clan. In Kenshi's canon ending when he goes to take down the Yakuza and free his family, Johnny literally goes with him. Johnny completely abandons his movie star lifestyle which everyone knows how much it meant to him, just to be able to help Kenshi. even in a few intros, Johnny will check in on kenshi and care for him;
-----------------------------
Kenshi: "You didn't have to pay for my medical bills, Johnny."
Johnny: "Hey, what are friends with deep pockets for? Besides, you saved my life."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "I found a specialist in Geneva. He thinks he can repair your eyes."
Kenshi: "Johnny, my sight is gone. Sento is my eyes now."
Johnny: "Donβt give up hope just yet, pal."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "You sure you don't need a hand, pal?"
Kenshi: "If I need a guide, Johnny, you'll be the first one I call."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "How are you holding up? Seriously."
Kenshi: "Sento guides me, Johnny. I am adjusting."
Johnny: "Just remember you donβt have to carry the world by yourself anymore."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "You're pushing yourself too hard, Kenshi. Take a breath."
Kenshi: "My clan does not rest, Johnny. Neither can I."
Johnny: "Yeah, well, your friend says you need to."
-----------------------------
Kenshi: "I am forever in your debt, Johnny."
Johnny: "Don't worry about it. Just keep being my favorite straight man."
Kenshi: "I mean it. Your friendship has saved me."
-----------------------------
Kenshi: "Stay behind me, Johnny. I've got your back."
Johnny: "Hey, I'm the one who's supposed to be looking out for you!"
Kenshi: "We look out for each other."
-----------------------------
He even defends Kenshi in some intros;
-----------------------------
Tanya: "Kenshi presents a vulnerability to our perimeter."
Johnny: "Kenshi is exactly where he needs to be. You look out for your Empress, I'll look out for him."
-----------------------------
General Shao: "Earthrealm relies on a broken, sightless warrior?"
Johnny: "That 'broken warrior' can cut you in half without looking. Put some respect on his name."
-----------------------------
Shang Tsung: "Kenshi's blindness makes him an easy target."
Johnny: "You come anywhere near him, snake eyes, and Iβm personally breaking every bone in your body."
-----------------------------
Reiko: "How does Kenshi expect to fight when he cannot even see his opponent?"
Johnny: "He doesn't need to see you to kick your ass, Reiko. Trust me, I've watched him do it."
-----------------------------
Rain: "A blind swordsman is no match for a high mage."
Johnny: "Keep talking trash, waterboy. Kenshi will drop you before you can even blink."
-----------------------------
What im trying to say is that Johnny genuinely cares for Kenshi, beyond what we see in the game, and that its MONTHS of care and work. Not 5 minutes. In the story mode epilogue and character endings, Johnny doesn't just write a check for Kenshi and calls it a day, he completely abandons his movie star lifestyle in LA. He dedicates his time, his money, and his personal safety to help Kenshi establish the OIA. Johnny pivots from a selfish cocky celebrity to a full time partner in a dangerous global task force just to back Kenshi up. That's character growth and not a yaoification as some claim to be. Or that his care only appears for 5 minutes and he goes back to being an asshole.
Kenshi and Johnny tease each other quite a lot, they have a playful dynamic and always have had one...
-----------------------------
Johnny: "Think you can handle a movie star, blind guy?"
Kenshi: "I can handle you with both eyes tied behind my back, Cage."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "Admit it, Kenshi. You miss my handsome face."
Kenshi: "I miss the quiet more, Johnny."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "Did you see that move I just did in practice?"
Kenshi: "No, Johnny. I did not."
Johnny: "Right. Bad phrasing. Did you feel the hype?"
-----------------------------
Johnny: "I could get you a stunt double role in my next movie, you know."
Kenshi: "Only if your character spends the entire film being completely silent."
Johnny: "Ouch. Harsh, Takahashi. Harsh."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "Don't go easy on me just because you're using Sento."
Kenshi: "I never go easy on you, Johnny. You talk too much to deserve it."
-----------------------------
Johnny: "Be honest, Kenshi. You're just jealous of my devastating good looks."
Kenshi: "I am blind, Johnny, not blessed."
-----------------------------
This is them simply teasing each other.
In general relationships shouldn't really be based on what you do for one another, but rather how you bring out the good side from each other and also endure the worst moments. But since ive gotten a comment saying that apparently Johnny kidnapped Kenshi, exploited him for clout, did not care for Kenshi, their relationship built on a one-sided incident, Johnny immediately went back to being an asshole towards kenshi, yada yada yap yap....
I rlly wanted to write this to show how they equally care for one another. How Johnny threw away everything because he wished to care for Kenshi. Again, if he was acting out of surface level guilt, I dont think he would go lengths doing all of this for Kenshi and considering him a friend. I dont think Kenshi would admit to saying that this friendship saved him either.
I dont understand why shipping them needs to be a debate anyways (my suspicion is homophobia to some extent lol), since shipping is normal in every fandom... if you are this concerned about johnshi, you'd have a heart attack finding out people ship subzero and scorpion (NOT MK1 VERSION)
anyways uh. Shipping has always existed in every fandom and if you dont like the ship thats entirely fine. You dont need to. Ship both of them with whomever you want as long as its legal and no proshit things.
Just because theyre not canonly in love doesnt mean you cant ship them AUGHHHH THIS IS BASIC FANDOM KNOWLEDGEEEEE
