B sits on the edge of the countertop, the newspaper thrown to their side. The coffee they just drank swims in their guts as their eyes burn with the threatening promise of tears. The headline mocks them.
"Whumper on Parole: Where Will They Go From Here?"
A walks in, takes one look at B, and quietly moves to the coffee pot. They fill their cup, deeply inhale the aroma, and take a deep drink. "They got out?"
B's fingertips dig into the edge of the counter. Their lips press into a thin, wobbly line as they muster up the tiniest of nods.
A drains the rest of the coffee without care for its scalding heat. They lean back against the counter across from B and cross their arms. "You know, I could take care of them for you. You'd never have to worry about them being loose."
B shakes their head. "No, it's not worth the risk."
"You know I wouldn't get caught."
"That's not what I mean, A."
A looks down at their shoes. "It's not your fault, B."
A tear singes B's cheek. "Okay."
"I mean it." A pauses, watching B tremble. They know not to come too close to them right now and risk it hurting them more. "Come on. Let's go to C's."
B wipes their cheeks. "Why are we going to C's?"
"Because C owes me a batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and they're way better at giving a safe hug than me."
B's unease cracks with a small smile. "Thanks, A. I mean it."
"Save the sentiment for C." A smiles and helps B down from the counter. "Anytime, B."
