1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

if i’m allowed to be picky, i also wish people could be more thoughtful/realistic when deciding on scars. like do some research and think ‘how did this injury happen’. if someone got attacked by wolves, how does that give them a straight cut scar across their face? 

and where are the other effects of these injuries? nerve damage, contractures, amputations, brain damage, PTSD, chronic pain, speech issues, sun sensitivity, blindness, etc? and please do research on these too, its good, its not that difficult.

i want to see characters have scars, and still be able to be normal, and cute/pretty/beautiful/sexy, and loved, and happy. this includes people with extensive burn scars, with skin grafts, with tons of reconstructive surgeries, who are missing eyes or noses or ears or limbs. this includes people with keloid scars, who don’t look normal, who have “gross” symptoms from their injuries. this includes people who have scars from elective or cosmetic surgeries, and surgeries that were botched. this includes people who have scars from self harm or suicide attempts. 

   please give more characters scars, and be normal about it. i am (politely) begging you. 

i want to see writers being normal about their character's scars. i want to see other characters being normal about the character's scars. i want to see the character being normal about their own scars.

so many fics i see with scarred characters revolve around the scar in such a way that is definitely realistic for some, but is not realistic for all. i have so many scars that i just straight up forget about until someone has been staring for a tad too long and it finally clicks like "oh shit, yeah those exist".

what’s the situation? have they just gotten rescued? are they dying? touch starved? or maybe just tired, and want a safe place to rest? or all of the above?

is it a leap? are they desperately crawling into caretaker’s embrace, trying to get as close as possible? or is it cautious, like they’re scared caretaker will say no? or is it arduous— maybe they’re weak from fatigue or injuries or blood loss, and it takes a lot of effort for them to make the movements.

so i love this trope but im not talking the basic 'locked in a room and isolated for days until they beg and break' (do love that too) but im talking about the emotional isolation.

Eyes darting towards the threat. Subtle but great

Screaming out through their gag. Of course, unless the gag is loose or ineffective, the rescuers won't understand them

Thrashing against their bonds. Especially if the rescuer is trying to untie them!

In a call, Whumpee would act out of character, or say a code word that only the rescuer knows, or similar, to warn them that it was a trap.

Knocking something over.

Hurting or even killing themself, The Highwayman style if you like

Telepathy. Too easy IMO though
